BS: NHL Reg Season '09-'010

Subject: BS: NHL Reg Season '09-'010

Every dumbass commentator is calling this 09-oh10, so what the f*ck. I may as well.

I'm suggesting a different focus this year for our all-year hockey thread. The tone (for those of you new to Mudcat-style hockey threads) has always been to respect one another's teams while still calling it as we see it for our own teams. We don't usually go much for the trash-talk of denigrating each other's teams. We DO bemoan our OWN teams' foibles.

And that is why I feel perfectly comfortable focusing this year on the many ways in which our Penguins SUCK. Yes, there is all the skill, talent, great coaching, great organization, etc. But I still see the places where they need to grow.

And THAT is why I can easily say, after seeing two RS games, that there is NO WAY they could have beaten the Wings last year if the Wings had been equally healthy (or the Pens equally banged up). Because the Pens I'm seeing in THIS game (we're a few behind on our DVR due to MIL visit) are more in love with having lucked into the Cup last year than with being able to win the Cup. They are not as focused as they SAY they are, on winning it again. They're still coasting too much (as individual players) on the heady magic of their talent. They don't yet see it as a JOB.

[rant off]

So there! How does YOUR team suck this year (or habitually)?

~Susan

Well, it's about damned time, Susan. I've been waiting to get going and I assure you that I will refresh this thread prn in order to keep it in our faces and quickly accessable to comments.

The first thing to write is that I agree with your assessment of the Pens winning the cup, in part, because the Wings were so banged up - we Winged folk didn't even know how much the team was damaged until it was all over and the truth of the injuries came out. But, hey, being healthy and/or injured is part of the game and you just have to deal with it - win or lose.

As for my guys,...hmmm, well, as far as I'm concerned we are in trouble for this year; but, again, I'm not maintaining a locker at The Joe, and Babcock still doesn't call me, so...

But, I do think that we have a big problem in the net. Ozzy will be fine, but I'm in the camp that does not think that Jimmy Howard will get it done, and, I'm also very disappointed that they were not able to find a way to keep Ty Conklin - I really like him.

Our penalty killing has been especially bad going back to last year and that needs to be addressed BIG TIME. I've seen all three of their games this year and the two that were played in Sweden left me wondering if there were "fake" Wings on the ice - I just didn't see that crisp puck-control and they seemed so slow; however, game #3, last night at The Joe saw the guys emerge a-new and they beat Chicago in a very good game, so...

Hey! Life's good - hockey is back. GO RED WING!............mwh

...well, I've been hanging around, but last year I started a hockey thread because I couldn't find the other one, and as I recall, I was sort of called to the carpet for it - so this year I thought it wise to just wait it out with certainty that it would show up.

More bad news for my Wings - Franzen has a torn ACL and will be out until mid-January and that is going to really hurt. Enjoy the weekend hockey and we'll chat down the road. Cheers,.........mwh

Hay Michael, just finished reading on the Franzen injury. That is some blow. There is no one in the organization that they can bring up to replace this quality player. But it will give management time to have a good look at whoever they insert in the vacant spot than get rid of. Abdelkader has never impressed me. I hope I'm wrong.

Pens are vulnerable in ways they do not even begin to realize. One way is for opponents not only yo draw penalties on them, but draw 'em intentionally on our penalty killers. We're already vulnerable on PP, so if our best P-killer is in the box, it might as well be a 5 on 3.

Beer - nice to hear from a fellow Wing-nut! I'm not sure about Abdelkader either, but he did score a couple of needed goals in the finals last year; we'll have to wait and see. There's a nice little bit in today's on-line Freep about May and his new Red Wing number -
and the one he would like to have. Cheers,..............mwh

Even though the "Broad Street Bullies" have moved to Toronto and become the "Bay St Bullies", the Leafs still suck.

I read an article recently that selected the top 100 sports team logos. They were chosen from all sports including the professional ranks, as well as amature, high school, college and university teams. 3 N.H.L. teams made the top 10 list. Some of you will be happy to know your team was #2, with Chicago Black Hawks being #1.

I have written several really good posts over the years here about fighting in hockey, but I'm tired or re-stating them. This year, the first thing I noticed about the fighting in hockey (courtesy of one of our rivals' behavior in their own building) was that with a hockey ticket-- YOU GET TWO SPORTS IN ONE EVENING with one ticket, one dinner out, one babysitter, etc etc etc.

And fans like it. Tough! :~)

Michael, my thoughts on number 24 is that yes it should be hoisted to the rafters. Chris Chelios hated by many, including myself when he played for the Canadians turned his game completely around when he went to the Wings. His contribution should never be forgotten.

Beer - I, too, would be happy to see Chelly up in the rafters; after all, he spent ten years with the Wings, and frankly, I just love the guy. According to what I read on the Freep page this morning - May called and asked Chelly if it would be o.k. if he (May) wore #24 and Chelios said it would be fine, no problem.

Just an observation here: the family has switched from cable to the
AT&T "U-Verse" set-up for t.v. and internet and we've found that we can get several hockey games a week - including the Red Wings. The other day I was cruising to see what was on and I found a "Classic
Hockey" game on one of the channels - Chicago Blackhawks were playing the Red Wings at the old Olympia. WOW! Howe, Lindsay, Delvecchio(sp), Hull, Hall, Mikita were all playing and the year was 1965. There were several interesting things to observe about the game but the stand-out feature was the complete lack of helmets and/or face masks except for one player - and he was a very young forward.

Kelly and I noticed that there was not a lot of fighting and what fighting did occur was brief and not so intense as it can be today.
We discussed it and concluded that if the players of today didn't have so much body protection they may not play quite as aggressively and might just be not so quick to start a fight; but, then again?

Cheers from Hockeytown South,...............................mwh

We grew up with those Hawks! Oh man.....

Not only the body armor, but the beefed-up muscles and the big bones of today's huge players-- just like a handgun built on a large frame absorbs a lot of kick, so too the larger bodies handle impact differently than small bodies.

I don't doubt the glass/boards systems' technology has changed a lot since the old days, too, to absorb some of the shock. See the way the glass waves around the arena when there's a hit.

In the game we saw last night, we wanted to know the answer to the joking question of the commentators-- when your guy is hit on accident by a TEAMMATE, does the hit register in the stats, and can there be a penalty? :~)

Or, didja ever see 2 current teammates drop the gloves on each other? I'd think the goalie might occasionally like to nail one of his own guys, and vice versa.

"We discussed it and concluded that if the players of today didn't have so much body protection they may not play quite as aggressively and might just be not so quick to start a fight; but, then again?"

"Or, didja ever see 2 current teammates drop the gloves on each other?" Yes! During practice, lots of them! And one of the worst offenders I ever had as a team mate was a goalie!

It's body armor period! I've preached this for years(to those who listen)!

Although I haven't rid myself of my golfing weight(255lbs), I'm still dwarfed by players who weight 100lbs lighter than me because of the equipment they wear.

This past weekend, I officiated in a tourny here in Orillia. Bantam aged players, 15-16 yrs old. They have no fear of injuring their opponents and no respect for the officials. At the end of the Championship game(Orillia vs Fort Erie), there was a two separated fights that started. As officials, we are not to break up fights alone. "Wait for your partner". As two of the players were getting pummeled, I stepped in to separate one fight and my oldest son took the other. BIG MISTAKE! A third man jumped into my fight and then a fourth jumped on him. Now I'm trying to separate four players who are all throwing hay makers with their gloves still on. I probably got punched in the head 6-8 times. Now in cases such as this one, the Referee's job is to stand back, with his riot pad in hand, and start taking numbers. He was too busy holding back the benches, because we were very close to a bench clearing battle. So, those that should have had the rule book shoved up their asses got away with most of what they did on the ice. Now we get one team off the ice and they remain outside their dressing room waiting for the other team. "Get in your room", was met with F-this, F-that, Suck my ----, F-you. In all my years of hockey, 45+, I'm not sure I was ever so close to loosing it!
Welcome to another season of minor hockey!(maybe my last)

[hysterical laffing]

OK-- trying to get serious-- Are you saying that some of the fighting in hockey stems from TEENAGE HORMONES????

(And thus is it possible that some of the lack of respect mirrors the societal trend to treat kids as adults?????)

And then when they grow up to play in the NHL they fight!?!?!?!? THERE's a shock, eh.

(I actually never thought of that!)

What's funny about it is-- if you have raised boys, this kind of stuff goes on all the time.

Of course it's NOT funny as hockey ed, or for 3refs to have had a hard time.

What else is funny about it (to me) is that with strokebrain, I had forgotten some of the more memorable boy-romps at my house when I added a new stepbrother to a houseful of boys and their rowdy uncles. Who one day tossed a wayward lad into the shower to cool him down, all in good, rowdy fun which changed incipient REAL violence to comedy.

In strokebrain, the post above drew me a quick picture of Jarkko Ruutu tossing a wayward lad into a shower. It cracked me up before I could take it apart to articulate it HERE. (So sue me)

I like to define for myself what is funny-- don't we all? :~)

You know, Beer, I think we're in for a long season - they looked so bad last night that the Griffins might have kicked their ass. Yeah, that was terrible and disgusting and rotten and sickening all wrapped up in one and very hard to swallow; but, I took a moment out to recall the drubbing we handed Patrick Roy and the Avalanche in the playoffs a few years back 7-0 - Wings! I guess anyone can do anything on any given night, but still, I don't like the looks of this team right now at all. One of my favorite Irish bands is a group called, Three Men and a Dog, and last night that's what our guys looked like - even Lids stunk up the ice, and that's rare.
We'll get 'em next time. GO RED WINGS! Cheers,.............mwh

Stars beat the Preds tonight and that's a good thing for the Wings because they live on our block - any time someone from out block loses it's a good thing, but 6-0? Seems to be a lot of goals scored early on this year; I've not kept track over the years, but is this a normal thing for early in the season or are the goalies napping? Cheers,....mwh

Last night the Pens tried to give a game to the Blue Jackets but the BJs declined and handed it back. Could not believe we won it in the last 5 minutes of the game/SO. With many best-players missing. They will have to do it all over again tonight.

Beer - thanks for the tip on the website, you never know when it'll come in handy. We've got this AT&T thing down here called, U-Verse and we get FSD (Fox Sports Detroit) but we don't get the games. We get the pre/post game shows but not the actual game; which, would stink if not for the fact that they rebroadcast the game later that night, so I tape it and watch it in the morning with all of the ability to rewind, replay, pause, etc.

You're right, Helm played very well. I'm not as worried as some of the Freep readers up north - I think the guys are going to be just fine; it's a new and different team from last year and they are working the kinks out while sticking to the system that has kept this ship sailing so well for so long.

Personally, I think that it is just criminal that the "Original Six" teams do not play each other with frequency - much frequency.

Beer - I'm beginning to think that the Wings are this year's Dallas Stars who went from injury to injury to injury last year and then turned around and fired the coach. No, no implication here that Mike will be fired. Dallas brought in a new GM and he appointed his "guy" to the head coaching spot.

If you are talking about points in the the NHL statistics it is the last player to touch the puck that gets credit for the goal. If the last player to touch the puck on either team got credit I'd bet that the goalie of most teams would be the leading scorer. Remember when Gretzky used to bank it in off the goalies' butts?

If you score on your own net the only stat you get is a negative point on your plus/minus.

Well, Happy Birthday to me! What a cool surprize; I opened up an envelope today and found that my brother had sent me down a bunch of stuff from the Free Press on Ernie Harwell - the grand voice of the Detroit Tigers from my childhood. Not to elaborate here, but I got to meet Ernie on his farewell tour some years ago and it was just a thrill of a life-time. I just love the man.

Oh, yes, lest I forget, also included in the envelope was a Detroit Red Wings jersey shirt with the #5 and Lidstrom on the back. My wife wears 40-Zetterberg and I wear 13-Datsyuk and we both have voiced that if we got another one it would be Lidstrom. Way to go Tim - great stuff!

Has to start with coaches defining what kinds of hits make them smile and what kind don't. It's all about ice time and who gets it. GMs can send that message too, at contract talks time, and by who they keep and don't keep. ALL of our teams have done the same type of hit for which we are now castigating a Hab-- if we admit it, we know this is true at some point in our teams' histories (if not now).

There has never been a team called the "Lady Byngs." If there were a whole team that played THAT clean, there'd be an award for it I am sure.

Vokoun OK after scary moment
Tuesday, 12.01.2009 / 1:00 PM / News
By Dan Rosen - NHL.com Staff Writer
The video is just about everywhere now, but the only thing that matters is Florida Panthers goalie Tomas Vokoun is OK after getting whacked in the head by teammate Keith Ballard's stick in the first period of Monday's 4-3 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers.

More:

Ballard swung his stick in frustration after Ilya Kovalchuk scored 8:54 into the first period to give the Thrashers a 2-1 lead. Using a baseball-type swing, he was trying to break his stick over the goal in frustration but instead caught Vokoun in the side of the head.

Neither the Panthers nor the NHL will discipline Ballard for his actions.

"It's a non-factor," DeBoer said. "This guy was visibly shaken and upset by the incident in the game. When we found out that Tomas was going to be fine I think he gutted it out and played the rest of the night for us. Tomas got on the plane and they had a chance to chat and sit together and there were no hard feelings.

"It's unfortunate. We don't condone it. I think organization's biggest issue now is getting the message out to the kids watching the game that it was a heat-of-the-moment play and it's not how you want to handle your frustrations. I'm sure Keith won't do it again and we're moving forward."

Ballard's night got worse as Maxim Afinogenov's game-winning goal deflected off his stick and into the net with only 5.5 seconds left in the contest.

"Obviously Keith has had some tough games the last few and the team has been losing and you see that frustration boil over in all different ways, whether it's guys taking penalties, whether it's yelling on the bench, yelling in the dressing room or whether it's slamming his stick after a goal," DeBoer said. "This one had some consequences."

DeBoer said no one on the Panthers' bench immediately realized what happened after Kovalchuk scored.

"Our trainers had to be called a couple of times because I don't think anybody on the bench realized what happened," DeBoer said. "I don't even think Keith realized he hit him. If you watch the video, he proceeded to hit his stick one more time after he hit Tomas and that tells me he didn't know."

David was in his 5th grade class when the teacher asked the
children what their fathers did for a living.

All the typical answers?came up - fireman, policeman, salesman, etc.

David was being uncharacteristically quiet and so the teacher asked
him about his father. 'My father's an exotic dancer in a gay bar and takes off all his clothes in front of other men.

Sometimes, if the offer's really good, he'll go out to the alley with some guy and make love with him for money.'

The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the
other children to work on some colouring, and took little David aside to ask him, 'Is that really true about your father?'

'No,' said David, 'He plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs but I was
too embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids.'

OK. I'll take a stab at drafting "a question." This would go SO MUCH BETTER during a game intermission with a coupla beers! Or Beers! :~)

When NHLers say "juniors" do they mean all one league/age group/country?

Is WHL at the same level as Rimouskie? (Is Rimouskie also St. Mary's? I'm thinking Crosby thoughts there, have I got it right?)

Are under-18 players in "juniors"?

Is college hockey equal in any way to any level of juniors?

Is one's playing slot due to age or skill? Or is there a tiered system like NHL fed by AHL fed by ECHL, inside the juniors system? Do they compete into those slots?

Do NHL-drafted players get sent back to "juniors" likek Jordan Staal was maybe going to be, but then sent back up or do they have to then rise up thru the ranks of the pro leagues, and if so what determines at what level they start-- do they have to go to the ECHL first and then get sucked upwards to fill an open AHL slot for a game or two, or can they just be plucked out of juniors and signed for whatever level suddently scouts them as "ready?"

Is there a time or age limit on how long they can be in juniors before whatever NHL rights or contracts expire-- I'm remembering something from the Malkin thing where I think I recall he had to be in his draft team's NHL uniform by such and such date or his something would expire-- his draft status maybe?

My head hurts.

Is it really just as simple as "training camp" invites from scouting reports? Maybe it is, but then what are the contract implications, limitations, expectations?

1-When they refer to Jr's, they usually mean the "Canadian Hockey League" which is the Ontario Hockey League, Western Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. It does have teams that play out of the U.S.A. They also have Tier 2 Jr A(with some U.S. teams), Jr B and Jr C. They are all stepping stones to Major Jr. Some kids go right from Midget(usually AAA)to Major Jr. Lots of scouts at Bantam AAA games because that's when they get drafted to Major Jr.

2-Yes there are under 18's in Major Jr.

3-Very very few go directly from Jr to the N.H.L.

4-I would say University and College hockey is on par with Tier 2 Jr A. Age difference though. Up to 21 for Jr, and I think it's 25-30 for school hockey. But if you can make it to Major Jr, you go(almost without exception.

5- At the minor-pro level, if your not under contract to anyone, you can try and get a tryout in just about any league anywhere on the planet. If your under contract, you go where your told.

6-When drafted out of Jr, the team has two years to sign you to a contract, or you go back into the draft. Many players go undrafted, but still make it to the N.H.L. signed as free agents.

I coached a kid who was John Taveres' center in his last year of Jr with the Oshawa Generals. He's now playing in Texas.

I was going to start a separate thread on what I have to say but than thought differently on it.
I am disgusted, disgusted, disgusted, on the powers that be of handing out suspensions. Ovenschin(sp.) deserved a hell of a lot more than two game. I love the player but this is a pure money thing(star players get off easy.).
The situation with the Cooke incident the same thing. Excuse me , but un fucking acceptable.

I love hockey and it would hurt it Zenburg(no time to check spelling .) or Paval were out for awhile for a hit, but it has to be done to star players and in big time fashion. A game suspension here or game there to set an example is completely out of context. It fucking doesn't work.
Here is the answer in my opinion.
If it is viewed to be a hit with intent(viewed by camera's,control center, ref's, players, coaches or whatever.), than it should be an eye for an eye. If Campbell is out for the season than Ov., on his deliberate push/hit should also be out for the rest of the season. There are very few star players but Ovenchin is one. However if the league wants to set an example than let it start now. If not, than I guess i can always turn off the telly.
What a f....f.... mess. What are these so call intellects doing. Are their heads up a camel ass?

Since it's short, here is the press...

TORONTO - The NHL's modified rule on blindsided hits to the head has finally received approval.

The NHL Players' Association released a statement Thursday saying that its executive board supported the endorsement of the five player representatives on the competition committee.

The temporary rule will give league disciplinarian Colin Campbell the power to hand out supplementary discipline for head hits on unsuspecting players for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs.

The institution of a permanent rule that includes an on-ice penalty - something NHL general managers recommended two weeks ago - will be discussed over the summer by the competition committee.

Thursday's announcement brought a peaceful end to a potential disagreement between the league and players' union over how rules should be instituted.

The NHLPA said in a statement that it hopes to keep working with the league to make the game safer.

That's why "shoot-outs" are no way to end a hockey game, but I know they're necessary(and exciting).

If I had my way, they'd make the goalies shoot against each other.

Other than that, how we do it in minor hockey is the two shooters shoot at the same time(going in opposite directions). One on each side of the center ice face-off circle. That way neither the shooters or the goalies knows who the fans are screaming at!

Bobad,
I just came in from my work shop where I listened to the game on the radio. I came on line to revive the thread and say the following; "Bobad must be in his glory. Probably smoking a great big cigar and drinking some Plonk Wine. Or else he is in la la land savoring tonight's win".
Just checked in on the Wings and after the first period they are up 2/1 against the Coyotes. To early to get excited.

Good luck to your Sens Bobad. I suppose I should say the same to Susan and her Pens. Good luck Susan.

Thanks, Susan - much appreciated.
To the Red Wings - NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO - NO!
1. You cannot score on a PP when you're playing in your end
2. You cannot win if you only play hard the first two periods
3. What happened to your PK? Did you leave it at The Joe?
4. Zee - what happened to ya? Did I miss you some how?
5. Refs - I usually don't ever fault you, but you stunk this game.

Again, Susan, I was at the online version of The Hockey News yesterday and there was a voting ballot for the best player in the league for this year. I looked at all of the candidates and to my chagrin there were no Red Wings on it, so I settled for a choice between Ovechkin and Crosby - yes, Crosby. Now, I like Ovie more than Sidney, but I have to say, there's been a turnaround in my heart and I've come to accept SC as a damned good player and I'm over the NHL having shoved him down my throat. Well, the long and the short of it is that I cast my vote for Crosby; while I do like Ovie and his flamboyant attitude, I couldn't get past my feeling that Crosby is a more complete player than Ovie. So there, I can make adult decisions after all despite still being a child after all these years. Good luck to your Pens and remember - GO RED WINGS!

I've asked Joe Offer if he will do me the favor of closing this thread when I start MWH's "Lord Stanley's Cup" auction-- it will save me having to PM everyone to ask nicely to move to a new Playoffs thread I'm about to start. But you all can help me now while I wait for Joe to respond, by letting this thread drop off the day's threadlist and posting now in the one I am about to start. I'll start it with a word about what I plan in the Auction. Feel free to chime in or PM with any ideas how to have even more fun while we raise a boodle for MWH's cancer recovery.

It was an upset. But, when that elbow in the face near the end wasn't called I knew the Habs were gonna win. I just knew they had to win. Just because of that dirty shot and the lack of a call.

I was yelling at the Habs goalie in the final seconds to take one more "step" behind his goal and fire the puck at the empty net but he did the right thing. He wasn't watching the game in my living room so he didn't have my view of the ice. He did the "right thing" all game... he won the game for the Habs.

It sucks being a DC sports fan... Here we had a shot but...

... hey, it's DC sports where other than 2 superbowls a long time ago we've gone thru 4 to 5 decades of sucky pro-sports teams... I mean, I don' think there is another major city that is as snakebit as DC... Bullets, Wizzards, Redskins, Nationals, Sebnators, Caps, United... They all suck and have sucked since before Columbus found the New World and should life as we know it come to an abrupt end, they will continue to suck even after that...

But, like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football while Lucy pulls it away, we will continue to root for one losing team after another until we die...

But this sucks...

I am surprised the Habs are up by one... BS luck. Pitt is playing much better hockey. They are making the Habs look like school girls that can't decide what to do with the puck... except trying to give it back to Pitt outside the blue line. I am getting hoarse.

And the lack of penalty calls is atroacious. The hits after the play, behind the play and AWAY from the play are hard to watch. I know a ref can't see em all, but this is ridiculous... someone is gonna get hurt or in a fight. And, since the Habs started it in the first minutes, it's getting worse from both teams. Seriously, I don`t think the Habs are gonna win. I will be cheerin fer em, but... Pitt just skates better and doesn`t look like they don`t know what to do with the puck. I mean, gee whiz... you are supposed to go to the net with the guy that doesn`t have a jersey like yours... not keep dumping the puck mid-ice! You are not supposed to pass DIRECTLY to someone dressed in a different uniform! Overall, if these mistakes continue, the Habs will be out. Their win today was surprisingly BS luck.

I feel vindicated for my extreme ire over that penalty at the end of the second period in the last Habs vs Pens game. The Cherry showed slo-mos and felt the same way I did. As I am sure many fans for both teams did. I think Sid The Kid is a Canuck hero for what he did in the Limpics. He's a Maritimer. I love to watch him play.

But what the fuck is this bullshit that he can cross check, rake and trip behind the play but cannot even be shoved with a hand in the shoulder? Unreal... unf***ingreal! Hero to zero. Pussy.

And that is why he is booed every time he touches the puck in Montréal.

Oh... and, they are not booing that wicked check in the first period (it was fine)... they are booing the lack of a penalty that should have been called when the second Wing that went down with the Hab elbowed him in the kidney. WyTF was that not called? That was as dirty as it gets. That should draw a fine.

This is getting upsetting. I don't like dirty hockey.

I hope the Habs win. But, that doesn't look likey.... the Pens have a lot more men on the ice.

Well... I dunno. But I do know that the calling in the last game and the present game are bullshit. I tape some games while I am watching them as I have to answer my office phone as required. When I play some stuff back, it makes me even more pissed off. And, when The Cherry plays the BS back on national television, I feel I can post my feelings here. That is, it's not just sour grapes... no pun intended (Canuck joke... Don Cherry).

But, it could be so Jack... why else could it be? I don't see any refs with with white canes.

Let's just see what happens. I'll try not to be so negative.

We always turn off the TV as soon as our Pens piss away a game, sometimes before it ends, so we missed all that and I've erased the game. I hate to take such a negative view as the "final word" on it, but I have no comeback because I didn't see what you guys apparently saw.

Maybe it will turn up in tonight's coverage-- the local commentators we watch are no "homers" and I have often seen them decry Pens' actions when warranted. Of course the league also is watching and anything really egregious is always suspension-worthy-- stars or no stars.

I DID see our alternative team put the Canucks out, last night, and I hope to see the Habs retire gracefully for the year this evening, plus-- is the Boston series closing tonight?

OK, gnu, read another insult where none was intended. Here:

We always turn off the TV as soon as our Pens piss away a game, sometimes before it ends, so we missed all that and I've erased the game.

I hate to take such a negative view as the "final word" on it, but I have no comeback because I didn't see what you guys saw.

Of course the league also is watching and anything really egregious is always suspension-worthy-- stars or no stars.

===

Now. SOMEONE who posted above seems, to me, to have "seen" a whiner and a purposeful check, who APPARENTLY can read minds.

Instead of reading minds, or taking the assessment of people who seem to think they can, I simply prefer to take the League's harsh judgment-- which I am sure they will mete out if it is warranted. They were not afraid to suspend Ovie this year, or others, eh?

Or if you like I can post a gripe every time SID is cross-checked, slewfooted, and stickbutted-- and there is no call-- and then attack anyone who politely fails to agree. As you did!

If you prefer that kind of posting, by golly, I can do that too! :~)

BUT I WILL (PROBABLY) NOT CLAIM TO READ HOCKEY PLAYERS' MINDS.

Yeah, it's high stakes hockey but that shit is ridiculous. There ARE rules, no? That shit about "letting them play" is a bit much for me. Not the hockey I saw in my youth and was taught to play. If a guy is not near the puck, how can you mess with him like that and not get a penalty? BOTH teams are at it constantly.

If that kind of play is allowed, condoned, "expected" (???), I may as well go to bed early again. Piss poor.

Ooooh la la a Montréal needs some fucking manners in the stands. If the Habs lose in the semi-finals, okay... life goes on. But, to boo their own team on home ice for falling behind? It's just sickening.

Maybe Philly should win, even though I still harbour hatred for them. But that hatred was for foul play years ago... tonight, I was disgusted by Les Canadiens "fans" in the stands. Ruined the rest of the game for me.

There's a lot of talk that pellets (or something with bigger particles than sand) were spread in the tunnel entrance to The Flyers' bench.   Several Phiily skaters ran into a bit of trouble with 'bad wheels' throughout.   Might have been intentional. That'd be a shame because I've always held the Montreal franchise in high esteem. It'd be way beyond gamesmanship.

Out for our music/song/dance night @ McCarthy's here on Thursday night, we had a couple of drivers named Michaud in from Alberta. Big fellas and big life-long fans of Les Habs. They were along way from home and we gave 'em the royal treatment, but they really roasted me about hockey. I doubt they enjoyed the result of today's game, but I wish 'em well nonetheless.

Go Flyers!!

(btw, the music n' dance night was terrific... big bar with a good crowd and they all got quiet and gave us our due for the music. I love it when that happens.)

Susan: In the end, I like watching good hockey and true sportsmanship. When my team (which is a joke nowadays because I grew up watching MY team... "local lads"... not guys from thousands of miles away) wins, it's a bonus.

So, now, for me, it's about watching good hockey. The only reason I rooted for the Habs was Maurice, Henri, Jean, Yvonne, Frank, Jacques, Dicky, Guy... so many. I couldn't give two shits about the ferriners winning nowadays except that they are good and good hockey is fun for me to watch. I cheer as much for a beautiful goal from the opposing team as much as I cheer for a fluke goal by "my" team.

And I still hate Philly no matter who is on the team. Just like I cheered for the Habs. It makes no sense in this day and age, but I hope Chicago grinds them into the Zamboni.

There was some fantastic puck movement by The Flyers and some dazzling goals. Used to be called 'teamwork' boys... perhaps a lost art in this era of the mega-media-Star. It's been a joy watching the Philly team over-achieve from afar.

My first wife's parents were from Montreal. Her father actually coached for stint at Cornell where he had the good fortune of having Ken Dryden on his squad before Dryden put everybody's lights out at the next level.

Her father - they called him Gus @ McGill - also skated as a young man with Boom Boom and some other greats.   He was very clear in letting me know that those ones that went on to be Habs were way way beyond his level.

Say what you want about those '70s Flyers... they threw everything they had into the game... Rick MacLeish & Billy Barber & Moose Dupont & Reggie the Rifle & Gary Dornhoefer were a worthy supporting cast. Nobody marvelled at Clarkie's physique or towering stature... he was all heart and overcame the blood-sugar throughout. They beat some damn good teams fair & square.

I suppose there'll always be resentment from some of the old-line crew due to the fact that those Flyers were the first from outside the original Six to win the Cup. Their names will rightly adorn the Cup as long as it exists... Let's Go Flyers!!

Same thing happened in baseball... in baseball! Kicking dirt on the ump? Brawls in the middle of the diamond? WTF?

Then, it found it's way to other sports. Sensationalizing the supposed violent aspect of games which needn't be "violent". Sickening.

Baseball? It's my understanding that it was never a gentleman's game until 'frat boy' Christy Mathewson entered the scene. To discern the gentle roots of baseball, you might want to take a look at the great career of Ty Cobb... rough and ready.

At St. Joe's in Philly in the '60s, we were fortunate to have a teacher by the name of Aloysius "Buzzy" Travers SJ who had been recruited to play a single game as a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers for the final game of the year (I think it was 1912 or something). He got recruited off of a college field because Ty Cobb had gotten himself suspended for his rough play and the whole team just went home. To this day (the late) "Buzzy" holds the major league record for the most runs given up in a single game by a pitcher thanks to the immortal Cobb's antics.

I played the three main American sports everyday of my life growing up and we fought (in varying degrees) with each other every day. I doubt that young hockey players grow up much different. My son is currently playing college basketball and he reports that he's continually involved in near-fights in practice on plenty of occasions. It's all part of it... always will be.

Speaking of roughnecks... how about the great Gordie Howe?

Well, I probably won't be able to stay up that late, so... Chicago is at home. They have to come out fast and furious with early goals against a GOOD defense that includes a GOOD goalie who is (was?) on a hot streak. At 1.45 GAA, Chicago may have a rough time with that.

In any case, I think it's gonna be a barnburnner of a series simply because both teams cannot sit on a two goal lead by relying on defense to carry them (until the last minutes of a game).

Poise and controlled stamina and avoiding penalties are taught before the birds and the bees but can easily forgotten for a moment under this kinda pressure. The coaches have their jobs cut out for them also.

I am a little encouraged that The Flyers were able to keep the final tally in both games to one goal.
We'll know alot more come Wed. night.   The Hawks are big and fast and skilled but The Flyers are hanging right in with them. It sure was tough to find some space to operate in Game 2 (and, imho, that's the way a Cup Finals should be).
I'd call it 'good hockey'. (I don't miss the lopsided reffing that regrettably seems to be mandatory when some glamour boy is involved... their absence makes the game more pure... again, imho)

That chippy action really wore down The Flyers on Friday night to the point where CHI almost got the equalizer. I'd say tonight the Blackhawks will try to lay a physical pounding on PHI and get the benefit that you'd expect for a home team. It's been four one goal games... a very good series. The Flyers have done well to hang in there, but I'm apprehensive about the ultimate outcome... ah well, we'll know soon enuff, won't we?

Hit the nail on the head... CHI is a big, rough team and they laid on the body. Philly did pretty well too.

When I said chippy, I meant the dirty stuff behind the play. Especially the cross checking by CHI - that was abusive and hard to watch. Philly did their share as well... or maybe not so well. As far as ding-dong getting a penalty after 6 seconds on the ice for the first time on the ice in games, ya KNOW the coach said go out their and injure. Just glad he didn't.

I don't think we'll see much chippy stuff or stupid penatlties tonight.

Flyers surely needed the extra day off after the physical pounding they received while splitting game 4 & 5. It'll be good for the NHL if they can force a Game 7.

On facebook over the past 2 months I have been in direct touch with:

(a) Rangers fans who were sure they'd Deep 6 us on the weekend B4 the playoffs commenced. (Also Pens & Caps fans who knew for certain PHI had no chance.)

(b) Verbose (and now silent) backers of the #2 seed N J Devils (who priorly had gotten great results vs. PHI)

(c) Bruins fans who surely had us beaten, down, out, gone, history, mocked, eulogized (and whatever other treatment you can render to a corpse)

(d) Habs fans who were certain history was calling their own name.

(e) And now, CHI fans who are certainly on the threshold...

Yet, let it be noted that on this date, June 9th of Anno Domini 2010, The Philadelphia Flyers are in it with a chance. That, my friends, is all you can really ask of a season or a life.

Let's Go Flyers!!!

Did you see that slash by Keith? That kinda crap turns my stomach. Glad the slashee, Hartnell, got a goal on that play.

Pretty hard to watch. I may give it up and go to bed if that shit continues.

Great game... good series... The Flyers stood up and made CHI earn it - and they did. Congrats to The Blackhawks - they deserve it!

I'm proud of the Hawks! Good on ya!!

An aside:

The BLACK HAWK WAR of 1832, named after the Sak chief who that name, was the only war in American history to be named after a person.

What am I gonna do until tomorrow? And even then, my choice would be France and Uruguay... Uruguay? England plays on the 12th but at 15:30 my time.

Is there any good basketball on these days?

MONTREAL - The clock is ticking down for a unique chance to own a piece of Canadian hockey history, albeit a pricey one.

Potential bidders have until 9 p.m. to put in bids Tuesday for the legendary jersey worn by Paul Henderson when he scored Team Canada's deciding goal of the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union.

The catch: you'll have to cough up a little more than $340,000 to have a chance of owning the scuffed-and-stained sweater.

The sale price of the game-worn jersey, which has created an impressive buzz since bidding began last month, will be at least $309,224.

That was the bid put forward by The Jim Pattison Group, a B.C.-based company that says the jersey would be destined for a Canada-wide tour before ending up donated to this country's sports hall of fame in Calgary.

As of Tuesday morning, 29 bids had been tendered for the white No. 19 jersey worn during what is arguably the most famous goal in Canadian history.

The jersey passed from Henderson, then to Canada's trainer as a gift, and then into the hands of an unidentified private American collector.

"(The buzz) is more than we expected, but as far as price we had an idea of what it could fetch," said Marc Juteau, president of Classic Auctions, the Montreal-area company in charge of selling the jersey.

"The attention that was given to the jersey has exceeded by far what we thought it would do."

Juteau said the final hours of an auction could be very hectic and he added that a bid for $340,147 _ the new minimum bid _ could come at any minute.

The Team Canada sweater went up on the Classic Auctions website last month with an opening bid of $10,000.

Since then, other Canadian-based companies, including Molson and The Forzani Group Ltd., have waded into the auction.

Canadian Tire initially bid $200,000 with plans to use it as a store-to-store attraction for customers, but has since dropped out.

B.C. billionaire Jim Pattison made an offer on June 17, a that was still the leading bid through Tuesday morning.

It's likely that the owner of the coveted jersey won't be known until the wee hours of Wednesday.

"To know 100 per cent for sure, you'll have to wait until the auction process is over," Juteau said.

The sweater's owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, is a cancer survivor who plans to donate some of the proceeds of the eventual sale to charity, Juteau said. Henderson himself was diagnosed with cancer, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, last fall.

The jersey has already set a record for the highest price ever to be paid for a hockey item via auction, eclipsing a Bobby Orr rookie jersey that sold for $191,200.

It's also gotten more than a few Wayne Gretzky jerseys sold privately for about $250,000, believed to be the most expensive pieces in the history of hockey memorabilia.

Juteau said the Henderson item has generated about as much interest as the personal souvenir collections of Jean Beliveau and Maurice Richard, when those went on sale.

"But for one given piece," he said, "(this is) the most attention we've ever gotten."

Henderson, 67, who donated another Team Canada jersey and a stick to the Hockey Hall of Fame, has said he'd like to see this one go to Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.

Henderson was inducted into that hall in 1995.

MONTREAL - Paul Henderson's legendary hockey jersey fetched well over US$1 million at auction early Wednesday following a late surge of interest in the historic cloth.

The winner bid of US$1,067,538 was submitted by Mitchell Goldhar, the owner of SmartCentres, a private real estate development company based in Vaughan, Ont., north of Toronto

Marc Juteau, president of Montreal area-based Classic Auctions, says Goldhar's bid was the 42nd entered for the 38-year-old red and white jersey.

Juteau also said once the auction fees were factored in, the final price to be paid by Goldhar is actually $1.275 million.

We're in hockey/eye candy heaven here-- our cable company added NHL HD to the lineup and there is a lot of summer programming.

Some of it is very good, some of it is crap; we're using it to catch up on all the hockey we missed 1970-present. It's a big hole to fill in, but the picture is starting to tune in nicely.

Today it's vintage Don Cherry stuff (hilarious), and last week it was late 1980's draftees.

Of course all this comes at us out of chrono order and with a lot of questionable validity/hype, but the mind sorts it all out and it's one big, summer-long party for us.

Of especial interest to me (as folks here may recall from past years' hockey threads) is the view in on the business side of the game, and of course how it has changed (and not changed) over the years.

It's all good! Vintage games, too.
