Here is the short article...

Air Canada plane forced to divert to Kelowna after man steals beer

KELOWNA, B.C. - Police took a man off an Air Canada Jazz flight in Kelowna, B.C., on Tuesday after a disturbance on the flight from Vancouver to Fort McMurray, Alberta forced the pilot to make an unscheduled stop.

Police say the man stole some beer from the beverage cart on the plane and tried to hide the evidence by flushing the empty can down the toilet. Airport Communications Officer Jenelle Turpin says the pilot made the decision to land in Kelowna and call in the Mounties.

When the plane landed the RCMP took one man away in handcuffs, while questioning two others before releasing them. The plane then continued on its flight.

(After, of course, they went to the beer store.)

Trying to flush the evidence probably wasn't the best way to get rid of it. Guy would have done better just to throw it out the window.

A bit of an over-reaction, in my opinion, unless there is more to the story.

Passenger must not have been Canadian. Canadians are just not unruly.

Must have been a very good local beer instead of the mass market dreck.

It's a very Canadian story, though, with it's two main elements being beer and a privy. And it's soooo depressing (poor guy couldn't get enough beer and had to steal it).

Two words for you, folks: new fie.

I mean, goin to Fort McMoney?

Guy oughta know enough to hide the evidence in his buddy's pocket, ain't it?

BobtP... or in the seat pocket... or in the sick bag.. or under the seat... or...

But, I thought the fact that they had to land for more beer was the way to go. Now, THAT is Canadian.

That's a good point, though. A Newfie would definitely have handled it better.

The nearest brewery to the Kelowna Airport is 20 km north in my home town, Vernon.

JtS says it sounds to him like it was probably some pothead from BC smuggling dope up his ass in a tea bag.

(He also said any Newfie worth his salt already knows how to flush a beer can down a toilet.)

Yeah, I was thinking the nearest grow-op to the Vancouver Airport has got to be a lot closer than 20km. But since there were actually THREE guys involved, I also wondered, what if they're from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

at least he wasn't trying to moon the plane,
as in a recent message about a train.

it reminds me of a t.v. show i saw a couple of days ago
a crime show...where the murderer hid the victim's body
in the toilet of the airplane...yuck!

"When the plane landed, RCMP briefly detained that man, who was later released on a promise to appear.

His two travelling companions were questioned and released.

"The comfort and safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority at Jazz and we have a zero-tolerance policy with respect to unruly passengers," Air Jazz said in a statement.

Holmes said the 23-year-old man, from Barriere, B.C., will likely face disturbance charges."

Every time that I stole beer, I hid the evidence down the lavvy, too.

Later, anyway.

May 1991. The first time I took my mother (then 66) abroad, we flew to Toronto with Air Canada. It was a 747 combi, so only half the cabin space of a normal 747. But, we had a touring rugby team in there. By the time we took to bouncing over Labrador, Mother and I were blocking an aisle each, while the crew were in the aft galley, frantically poured the remaining booze down the sink. "I'm sorry sir, we have run out."
When we got into Pearson, the team was starting to look a little hungover. They still had to fly to Calgary, I think, and there was a HUGE queue in the immigration hall. Bet they didn't feel like drinking on the next leg of the journey!
