Well I could think of quite a few things that are probably not happening, but that would not be very relevant. I suppose the implication of the question is possibly that something is not happening that should be happening. Like, for example, the magazine being published?

Do you mean this statement on Living Tradition

Issue 84
our next issue

Our next issue is in preparation and will include features on Bob Wood, Archie Fisher, Jeff Davis, Bram Taylor and much more.

This issue has been delayed for a number of reasons but primarily because of ongoing issues relating to our Summer Schools in 2007 when we became 'whistleblowers' in a complex situation involving (allegedly) property developers, local Councillors and a 'botched building' being declared Dangerous.

I don´t seem to have had many issues for a bi monthly magazine.

Seen the website I was hoping someone might expand on that.

Probably the strangest part of the situation is that Issue 83 appeared to find its way to Australia but still has to surface in UK. We had a lovely review in it but only managed to read it thanks to an Antipodean friend who kindly scanned the review and sent it as a .jpg.

It's not the first time it's been late. I'm sure we'll get it eventually.

From what I've heard the magazine runs on a shoestring and the admin is a bit of a shambles, probably a question of too few people doing too much work.

It's bad news for it to be too late though, as many adverts are event related and will go stale, discouraging advertisers from repeating the experience. It's generally an excellent mag - I hope it keeps going.

Speaking as a regular reviewer for and contributor to LT, I'm used to delays in copy appearing, missed pulblication dates, and last-minute 'could you?' requests. I rather like that somewhat quirky modus operandi! - it's endearing but I can quite see why subscribers are wondering 'wh'appen?'.
The last issue Folk Clubs got for door sales in the UK was the Tom Bliss cover (no.82) so Pauls' comment about issue 83, whose cover appears on the website is all the more puzzling.
Come home soon LT - the children are missing you!

I received Issue 83 quite some ago and having not received Issue 84 sent an email to Pete Heywood last week asking what had happened to it and had the magazine folded.

He replied that the Issue was late because he had been a 'whisleblower' in a complex issue involving Summer Schools he/they had run in previous years, see previous post (15.10.09 The Villan).

Pete had hoped to have had, by the date I sent the email, a circular to explain matters but this had not happened. He hoped the next Issue (No. 84) would be sent out shortly.

I am waiting in the hope of receiving it soon.

THE WILLIAM KENNEDY PIPING FESTIVAL

If you thought that the Festival season was over, we want to draw your attention to a Festival in Ireland – The William Kennedy Piping Festival. The organisers behind this festival have a 40 plus year track record or promoting traditional music. They have been at the forefront of the revival of Uillean piping in Ireland - leading directly to bands like Lunasa. The Living Tradition is visiting the festival to get a better idea of these background activities and to explore the impact that this organisation has had and is continuing to make. We are treating this Festival as a potential Gateway to many musical events in Ireland. Perhaps you can add a trip to Ireland to your plans for the coming year. We would encourage you to follow the link by clicking on the graphic above.

LIVING TRADITION MAGAZINE – IMPORTANT NEWS

The Living Tradition magazine is still 'living' but it has come through a tough time. We were involved in a series of Summer Schools which were successfully re-established in Dundee this summer. Many of you will know that we had some venue difficulties a couple of years ago and were forced to relocate the summer school at very short notice. Pete Heywood and his team then became 'whistleblowers' in what was a potent mix of, shall we say, 'mismanagement issues' involving property development and local politicians.

It has been a stressful period and has had a severe impact on The Living Tradition. Production of the magazine has been affected, the key issue being an impossible workload on Pete Heywood.

We seem to be making progress but need to address several issues so that we come out of this stronger. Behind the scenes we have been doing a lot of work on our website which will be re-launched over the next few weeks. The main difference is that the site will be interactive allowing people to add their own news and stories to the site.

The aim is to enhance the coverage of the magazine, give greater access to our readers and to help remove some of the bottlenecks in the system. We are also actively working on a transition to being a 'Community Interest Company'.

The current plan is to bring out the next issue of the magazine as a January / February issue. Subscriptions are based on a number of issues rather than time. We know from feedback that people want to see it dropping through their letterbox – and we are as keen as anybody to get it back on track. We still have a few hurdles to overcome but we have got used to struggles over the last 15 plus years. If you want to help in the meantime buying some CDs from our extensive stocks would help oil the wheels. A more detailed explanation will follow in another email.

READERS OFFER CDs:

We started selling CDs as a 'service' to our readers, many of whom found it hard to find this specialist music in the shop. Over the years this has been a useful source for many people and the money generated helps oil the wheels of Living Tradition. We have stocks of lots of wonderful recordings on our shelves. Many of these are listed in the 'Reader Offers' section of our website. Can I encourage you to have a look through these. Could I also put in a plug for our own 'Tradition Bearers' recordings. Our 'Scots Songs & Ballads' series has been recognised as a real treasury of Scots traditional songs, sung by some of the best singers of this generation. There are also recordings from other noted singers including Chris Foster, Steve Turner, Sara Grey and Kieron Means. Go to Readers Offers at The Listening Post

Why am I being sent this email?

This email is being sent to people who have had some contact with The Living Tradition. You have probably registered at some time for a newsletter. It is not our intention to swamp you with email but we felt that the availability of the magazine online was worth contacting you about. Please accept our apologies if you consider this junk. If you want to be removed from our list, please use the UNSUBSCRIBE option in the end section of this email. If you have any comments, ideas or feedback please send them to the newsletter address newsletter@folkmusic.net

Cheers

Well I haven't had an email at all, and I too am on the mailing list (snail and email). Might go and have a look at the MySpace page and the website. The mag has always been late, to the extent that when it finally drops through my door a fair number of the advertised dates at the start of a month have been and gone - something I've always found to be a bit of an irritant .... but apart from that I've always looked forward to receiving mine. Such is life at the moment that until this thread was started up I hadn't noticed the mag's absence. Looking forward to 84 as and when ... keep up the good work chaps.

I paid for a CD in mid December, given Christmas + weather I wasnt surprised at not getting a fast response.

But since early Jan I've been emailling (no response) & ringing Living Tradition. Up till this morning, I got 'no more room for messages', I now get 'this phone does not accept incoming calls'.

The line in the email about continuing to buy CDs to aid the magazine seemed feasible at the time of posting, now it seems desperate/cynical.

I hope they do sort themselves out, but I don't hold out much hope of seeing my CD.

Well, here's the latest Living Tradition Newsletter - dated January 2010 - which I received recently by email.

>>Happy New Year to you from all of us at the Living Tradition. We hope that 2010 will be a good one for you.
I just wanted to write to everyone to fill you in on what has been happening recently with the Living Tradition. I am sure you are aware that the latest issue of the magazine has been delayed for some time now, and felt it was time to write to you directly about this. Apologies for the delay in doing so, but as I'm sure you will appreciate, we have all been very busy trying to sort things out in this regard.
The reasons for the magazine being delayed are a mixture of financial issues and time issues. I am still under what feels like an impossible workload as the result of having to deal with issues arising from our summer school programme having to move venues, and the resulting need to establish a separate 'Community Interest Company' for them in order to make them financially viable. I am also still involved in a related 'whistle-blowing' situation which is a serious drain on my time and resources.
Coupled with this, and partly as a direct result of this, we are feeling the pinch financially, and to put it bluntly have not had the finances needed to print the next issue of the magazine. But every month without publication means a steady drain through rent and other office expenses etc. and the situation gets worse. I have taken on some additional work to keep the wheels oiled, but that also is increasing my workload!   However, I am hopeful that we can get back on track and plan that the next issue of the magazine will be out in late February, and that it will be the Festivals issue. Please remember that subscriptions are based on a number of issues rather than time, so you will still receive the same number of magazines, just over a longer period of time.
In the meantime, we have been working hard to create a new website for the Living Tradition that we hope will be both informative and interesting. We do not plan for this to replace the magazine, but rather to work alongside it. There is a social networking site called "theHUB" as part of it, and our aim is that this will be more interactive, and that people can use it to share news and information without necessarily having to go through the main LT office admin. Please visit the new website at www.livingtradition.co.uk and have a look around it. It is still a work in progress, but it is beginning to take shape. (The old website is still at folkmusic.net. We will move the new site there shortly)
There is a 2010 Festivals Listing on the new site and we are working hard to provide links to folk clubs and other events. Encouraging Live Music at the grass roots is at the heart of all that we do. I would appreciate any feedback you have on the new website. Send it to admin@livingtradition.co.uk
I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for bearing with us throughout this difficult time. I know you are eager to see the next issue, and be assured, so are we, and we really are thankful for your loyal support. We particularly appreciate the kind messages many of you have sent – sometimes these make all the difference! Please be assured that we are doing everything in our power to resume normal service, and I am hopeful that we are well on our way to this.
What really would help though, would be an injection of cash!   We have lots of great CDs in stock and selling them could be the lifeline we need. Please have a look at our webshop and consider treating yourself to that CD you have been after! Selling CDs that we have physically in stock has the most beneficial impact on us.
Thank you, again, for your support. With your help we will keep the Living Tradition alive for many years to come.
Cheers
Pete Heywood<<

I have got all issues since the first and have never really noticed any delays, being always very pleased to receive each issue. I have complete confidence in Pete and his team to 'come up with the goods' and trust them implicitly to do their best for us all. If Pete is under pressure and the magazine suffering we ought to be thinking of how we can help them out. I, for one, would certainly miss 'The Living Tradition' and would recommend that anyone who doesn't subscribe to do so, or at least buy a CD or two from their web-site.

I'm only too happy for them to sort themselves out. It's my favourite folk magazine.
Mind you, Ian says that he's never suffered from any delay with the magazine. Mine was always delayed, insofar as the round up of forthcoming gigs always included several at the start of the month which had been and gone because the magazine never arrived before the publication date and two monthly period in question started. I always found that extremely irritating.

I have to echo what Surreysinger says there. In fact, as it was the time (from the timing of the last issue) to send club info. in, I said so when I sent it a few days ago. It was very nice then to receive two quite long e-mails from Pete Heywood shortly afterwards - that was apart from the one repeated above - but it did occur to me that less might be more, i.e. if they're short-staffed, it might be better for him to be spending time putting the next issue together rather than writing unnecessarily detailed e-mails to subscribers, however much they might be appreciated.

It's a bit rich that LT is still accepting subscriptions and stating on its newly revamped website that the magazine is published every 2 months. Those of us with subscriptions have had the promises and the hazy excuses but it's decidedly dodgy to seek new subscriptions when not fulfilling those already paid. How the print magazine can ever again be viable when there's no discernible schedule for advertisers is a mystery. They've presumably missed the festival advertising for this year...

Subject: RE: What's happening@Living Tradition mag?
From: Vic Smith

I have great admiration for all the work that Pete and his team have done over the years on LT and I have written quite a number of articles for the magazine over the years. However, they have got themselves into an unenviable position at the moment.

I would think that it is very unfair to call Guest Andrew's comments "snide sniping". He seems to be making perfectly valid comments. If the LT team are constrained from producing magazines at the moment, then they should not be seeking new subscriptions and advertisements on their website.

Their last circular which I referred to above indicated that by Mid-March they were hoping that the next issue should now be out by the end of this month. It was not and now we are in the middle of April. Under these circumstances, I feel that by now there should be an explanation to subscribers on the website and by email circular. It is a matter of keeping your customers and advertisers on-side by keeping them informed.

Thanks, Vic.

Guest OLDNICKILBY accuses me of "snide sniping". Hardly. I responded in a similar manner to a direct e-mail from Pete Heywood back in January. He asked subscribers for comments on the newly launched website. I mentioned privately then that I didn't think he should be inviting subscriptions for a magazine which isn't currently being published or continue to claim that it actually is published every 2 months. I didn't get a reply and three months on LT is still making that claim. I didn't get a reply. I really do not think that is good enough. In any other field it would be a matter for trading standards but us folkies are fairly good at cutting enthusiasts a bit of slack. There is a limit, though.

I'm still waiting for the next copy of Folk Review, I still have a few to go on my subscription. I think the last one I saw was around 1980, but what's 30 years between folkies ;-)

>>We are very pleased to be able to finally tell you that it has gone to the printers. It is scheduled to be printed today and should be out in people's hands over the next week.<<

For the record, issue 84 of Living Tradition finally arrived in the mail this morning. 68 pages (including about 25 pages of adverts). Featured articles on Jeff Davis, Archie Fisher, Fidil, David Oliver, Bob Wood, Sark Voices, Bram Taylor, William Kennedy Piping Festival, etc., and the usual CD review pages.
