Congratulations on a great accomplishment. Here's the book's U-Miss Press page. Dyer-Bennett taught speech to my wife in the late-70s, when she was a theatre major at the State U New York--Stony Brook. She knew nothing of his folk music background until she learned about it from me, 15 years later. -Michael Scully |

02 Oct 11 - 06:48 PM (#3232778) Subject: RE: Dyer-Bennet biography now available From: Don Firth When Paul O. Jenkins posted the original post, I went straight to Amazon and ordered the hard-back. $50.00 list, but Amazon was selling it for $45.00. Got it hot off the press. Most interesting! Among other things, great pictures, including one of Dyer-Bennet singing with Leadbelly. I had the pleasure and privilege of meeting and talking with Dyer-Bennet on two occasions, once in 1957, then again in 1962. Very personable, and he was quite encouraging about my ambitions as a singer of folk songs, or "minstrel." I found the distinction he drew between a folk singer and a minstrel or troubadour to be quite valuable and enlightening. Don Firth |
