Lyr/Tune Req: Dungarvan My Home Town

22 Jul 99 - 01:31 AM (#97884)
Subject: Old folk song from Waterford,Ireland
From: Mike in NZ

When I was a wee lad, visiting my father's home in Ireland, the locals used to sing a song (and still do I believe) called 'Dungarvan, my home town'.

Has anybody heard of it, does anybody know where I can get the words or music for it?

I noticed a response of 5 minutes on another thread although I will admit that was for a more popular song.

I tried the search to no avail, thought I'd throw the challenge out.

I suspect this ISN'T the song you're looking for, but it can't hurt to give you these lyrics anyway. From the singing of Sean Tyrrell

THE ORCHARD(K Evans, c. Morning Music)

When I was nine, in harvest time, I crossed the orchard wall
The moon was bright, the apples ripe upon the garden did fall
We filled our sacks, we made our way back, more adventures for to find.

I crossed the orchard wall again when I was just thirteen
It was, I think, to be my first drink of cider and poitín
I remember well, it tasted like hell; I hoped the pain would end soon,
In an orchard green neath the Comeraghs in that sweet Dungarvan green.

When I was nineteen years of age I crossed the wall with pride
My Annie fair with the nut brown hair was walking by my side
Our clothes came off, we tumbled and we kissed, all innocence was gone
In an orchard neath the Comeragh in the sweet Dungarvan dawn.

When I was twenty-one years old I married my Annie there
The apple blossoms in the trees were better in her hair
And when the day was over there was a drunk for every tree
In an orchard neath the Comeragh by those sweet Dungarvan seas.

Now I'm forty-five, I am much alive and children I have four,
Three girls and one fine strapping son and I have hopes for more.
I'll teach them of what lies ahead, I have plenty to tell still
In an orchard neath the Comeragh in that sweet Dungarvan breeze.

Now I'm ninety-one, my days are near done, my Annie is long since gone.
Our days they were good as well they should, but it's time that I passed on,
And when I die, I want to lie in the air, land and foam
In an orchard neath the Comeragh by my sweet Dungarvan home.

I don't know the air but here's the words.

DUNGARVAN MY HOME TOWN

There's a spot in the Decies
A place dear to me
Where the Comeraghs are keeping
A watch o'er the sea
And though far have I wandered
Yet wherever I roam
It's the place I love dearest
The place I call home

Chorus
Dungarvan my hometown
I love best of all
Dear old faces and places
Sure oft I recall
In my heart I keep wishing
Some day I will be
Back again in my hometown
My home by the sea

On the bridge I will linger
At sweet eventide
Just to gaze o'er the waters
At old Abbeyside
Happy memories come stealing
As the soft shadows fall
On the fishing boats anchored
There beside the quay wall

I have seen fairest places
But I'd rather be
Where the Cunnigar's sleeping
'Neath hills dear to me
And across the blue water
Of that quiet little bay
Dear old Helvick is dreaming
In her bonnet of grey

How I treasured each token
Of days that I knew
In that town of sweet memories
Where the friends are so true
And I thank God in heaven
For choosing me
My old home Dungarvan
My home by the sea

Mike! Good grief, we have no "System" here, that's for corporations. What we have is a digital cracker barrel.

Can any one tell me if they have the words to "My Crystal City Home".

I am making up a booklet of Waterford songs for an elderly neighbour of mine who will be celebrating his 90th birthday around Easter time.
Thanks

I googled a fragment (below) which appears to be by Denny Corcoran, who lives in the area:

Waterford my Crystal City fair
Waterford there is no place to compare
Near or far no matter where I roam
My heart is always with you, Waterford my home

Is this it? If you ask on the Déise boards above, I bet someone can point you in the right direction.

Best wishes to your neighbour on his 90th. A dear friend of mine in Donegal made it to 91 a fortnight ago and shows no sign of stopping there. Music keeps you thriving...

I learned this many years ago from a Makem/Clancy recording as I recall. I'm away from home for a few days but if you pm me I can send you the chords once I get back to my guitar and work it out again..

Haven't been able to find them online, but here's a news article on Denny Corcoran in the Waterford News & Star (note date: May '03) which should give you some Google-able info. I really do think your best best is to ask on the Déise board I suggested above - the link still works.

I found these lyrics here; I also used Wikipedia and Google Maps to check the spellings of all the place names, and I listened to the recording at YouTube to make other corrections.

WATERFORD MY HOME
As sung by the Gillespie Sisters

CHORUS: Waterford, my crystal city fair,
Waterford, there's no place to compare.
Near or far, no matter where I roam,
My heart is always with you, Waterford, my home.

1. Where the mighty Atlantic roar
Falls to silence on Tramore,
Where the Comeraghs sweep down majestically,
Where the Barrow, Suir and Nore
Combine close to Dunmore,
There between them lies a spot so dear to me. CHORUS

2. From Lismore to Cappoquin,
Through Dungarvan on to Ring,
Round Gaultier, Passage, and Cheekpoint,
Where our lovely waters meet
In a picturesque retreat,
They're all part of a spot so dear to me. CHORUS TWICE
