Richard, I hope you enjoy the tug at your beard... after your comments about the south london couple with the dogs, I had to find the words to Billy Braggs, Just Walk Away Rene for you...

Cheers
Lorcan

WALK AWAY RENEE
Billy Bragg

She said it was just a figment of speech
And I said "You mean figure"
And she said "No, figment"
Because she could never imagine it happening. But it did.

When we first met I played the Shy boy
When she spoke to me for the first time my nose began to bleed
She guessed the rest

The next day we went on a bus ride to the ferry
And when nobody came to collect our fares
Well I knew then this was something special
I couldn't stop thinking about her
And every time I switched on the radio
There was somebody else singing a song about the two of us

It was just like being on a fast ride at the fun fair
The sort you want to get off because it's scary
And then as soon as you're off you want get straight back on again
But all love is strange
And you have to learn to take the crunchy with the smooth I suppose

She began going out with Mr. Potato Head
It was when I saw her in the car park
With his coat around her shoulders that I realized
I went home and thought about the two of them together
Until the bathwater went cold around me
I thought about her eyes and the curve of her breasts
And about the point where their bodies met

I confronted her about it
I said, "I'm the most illegible bachelor in town!"
And she said, "Yeah, that's why I could never understand any of those silly letters you sent me"
And then one day it happened
She cut her hair and I stopped loving her

Having trouble fitting those words to the version of Walk Away Renee that I know (think it was the Four Tops).

Ah no, Richard... you have to speak them, with a south london accent, while playing walk away rene on the guitar... magic...

I don't think the Left Banke version did anything in the UK. I don't remember that at all.

Here are the Four Tops lyrics. They simply do not scan the same.

The Four Tops WALK AWAY, RENEE Lyrics:

And when I see the sign that points one way.
The lot we used to pass by every day.

Just walk away, Renee.
You won't see me follow you back home.
The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same.
You're not to blame.

From deep inside the tears I'm forced to cry.
From deep inside the pain that I chose to hide.

Just walk away, Renee.
You won't see me follow you back home.
Now, as the rain beats down upon my weary eyes,
For me, it cries.

[Instrumental break featuring flute solo.]

Just walk away, Renee.
You won't see me follow you back home.
Now, as the rain beats down upon my weary eyes,
For me, it cries.

Your name and mine inside a heart on a wall,
Still finds a way to haunt me though they are so small.

Just walk away, Renee.
You won't see me follow you back home.
The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same.
You're not to blame.

Ever notice that when you play the 45 rpm vinyl version of this at 33 rpm Billy sounds just like Frank Bruno?

Then there is the Irish version... I wrote, You can just walk on Soibhan...

THe yellow smoke of morning, breaks along woodquay
the smell of coal fires burning the way it used to be...

You can just walk on Soibhan, you'll not see me follow you back home
The empty sidewalks I walk down, there not the same, your not to blame

Do you recall the Ceili, where we first met,
we danced the Walls of Limerick, I can hear it yet...

Your name and mine, inside a heart, upon a wall
down past the liffy bridges, behind a market stall...

Isnt this some obscure reference to 'Allo 'Allo?
Ohh Hohh Renee!

Malheureuse, quoi t'a fait. ouais, avec moi?
Ca me fais du mal chaque fois je to regarde, ouais malheureuse.
Quoi t'as fait?

Malheureuse, quoi t'as fait à ton petit coeur.
(Madame Etienne)

Madame Etienne by Amadée Ardoin
(Just gimme any excuse ta bring cajun culture ta da heathens)

Unhappy girl. What have you done to me?
You hurt me every time I look at you, unhappy girl.
What you said, dear Jouline, you hu rt me.
Why have you always done what you'vedone to me.
I am going away, l going home.
I'm going home without you, Jouline.

Unhappy girl. just look at what you've done to your little heart.
I couldn't judge your story because of you.
Your story is only as good as your word.
What you told me, Jouline, hurt.
Dear Jouline, I'm not sure I'll be able to go away.
My heart aches just enough to make me cry.

and then there's Rickie lee Jones' version. I love it.
I also have always liked the flip side of the Left Banke 45, which was Pretty Ballerina.
