The Carter Family Fold was not open but I visited the gravesite of AP and Sarah. I know that there has been some dispute between surviving family and the trust that runs the fold that seems to be unresolved. In any case it was humbling to visit the gravesite of legends! |

22 Oct 09 - 05:53 AM (#2750065) Subject: RE: Folklore: Carter Family Home From: GUEST,DWR I think it's sort of a comparison to a Sheepfold. Maybe in the Bible sense as in the song, The Master Of The Sheepfold. I envision that as a place of safety. Merriam-Webster says: a group of people or institutions that share a common faith, belief, activity, or enthusiasm That works for me. |
22 Oct 09 - 05:56 AM (#2750069) Subject: RE: Folklore: Carter Family Home From: GUEST,Hootenanny I would thnk of it in the sense of a sheep fold, keeping the sheep together. The Carter fold keeps the family together or like minded people. I know next to nothing of the bible but are there not some hymns which refer to people coming home to the fold? I am sure that there are many more knowledgeable people thatn I that can explain it. Hoot |
22 Oct 09 - 09:33 AM (#2750193) Subject: RE: Folklore: Carter Family Home From: Sandy Mc Lean The Carter Family Fold is a family museum and performance building at AP's home at Maces Springs, Va. The museum is in AP's old store and the performance center is next door in a building put up by AP & Sarah's children Jennette and Joe. For many years they put on a show every Saturday night but both passed on a three or four years ago. |

I have visited the site and find the whole thing absolutely despicable.I thought I kept my ear pretty close to the ground re the goings on in the music scene in the South but this is the first that I knew of the problem. Can anybody tell me who the ?????? is Howard Klein? I have come across Kleins and Clines in this music but not this one. What are his credentials? What were his plans for these valuable recordings? I believe that Dale appears to have done the best thing possible in taking action to get this important material properly archived by a well rspected body of people and trust that it is still going ahead. Were these goings on reported in the Old Time Herald or Sing Out or any of the regular magazines supporting this music. Hoot |
