Chris Chesters Bass Guitars Chris has given the "bottom-end" to many theatre productions, acoustic and jazz artists including stage shows such as Evita, Les Miserables, Jesus Christ Superstar & Oliver. He has performed at many venues across the country including the Wirral International Guitar Festival, Numerous folk festivals, and Biddulph's Folk In The Park. Steve Finnegan Percussion Steve has appeared with numerous bands and touring productions as both drummer and percussionist – from folk to heavy rock, from jazz to classical. He has played on both local and national radio and other appears in other bands such as 'The Barlows' Joe Topping, Vocals, guitars, mandolin, harmonica A first class singer songwriter and performer in his own right, Joe has toured the folk clubs and festivals on his own and with various groups including The John Wright Band and The Tom Topping Band as well as touring with Joe Wright. His outstanding warm and expressive vocal is complemented by wonderful guitar and mandolin playing. Richard Woods Guitars, Bazouki, Vocals Richard has played alongside and supported various artists over many years. There seems to be a lack of interest in English acts up this neck of the woods though but we should still persevere. |

Wednesday was the 28th Oct. Whenever the gig was I hope it was attended .... even if you didn't think the locals would show any interest. Hazel. It was actually quite well attended especially considering the usual issues mentioned above and also because they had appeared nearby(Balerno) the night before too. So, we were content with the turn out although there was room for a few more. To be honest, they weren't entirely my thing but I've got to admit they are a very polished and talented outfit, They also appealed to the bulk of the audience there and seemed to go down a storm |

Judging by those YouTube clips, I wouldn't have. It doesn't make any sense to say they were poor box-office because they were English. Other "English acts" EFC could have booked include Jim Eldon, Mary Humphreys & Anahata, Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer, Speirs & Boden, Sheila Chandra, Jim Moray, The Boat Band... Maybe they got a crap response because they were crap? |

It seems that it was not the type of music the reviewer liked or perhaps understood. How many so-called "folk" bands don't use any amplification these days? Electric drumkits are a tad easier to cart around and I would think that the writer of "Shower The People" and "Steamroller Blues" was one of the greatest influences on Contemporary "Folk" music. Anyway I certainly don't agree with the idea of performers being described as "crap" just because someone don't like 'em. My idea of Hell is a day of Bagpipes and Hurdygurdy's but I would not describe it as crap. |

Experiences in recent years has shown us that English acts tend to draw a lower audience. That doesn't mean to say that we don't or won't book them. Next week, we have Steve Tilston who will attract a reasonably sized audience but it won't be anything like he deserves...unfortunately. We've had some of the acts you mentioned and would obviously be quite favourable towards the others. However, many of them don't tour up this neck of the woods that frequently and it can be expensive to bring them up for a "one off gig". There are obvious exceptions to this, of course. Established acts such as Vin Garbutt, The Carthys, Alan Taylor and so on never fail to get big crowds. It wasn't always the case. In the seventies and eighties, acts from South of the Border were very popular up here and many people wondered if EFC actually stood for The English Folk Club. :-) |
