Lyr Req: songs by Mississippi John Hurt

From: Scott Wilkinson

I just discovered Mississippi John Hurt (if you can believe it took me 36 years!). Now I'm obsessed with finding lyrics to all/most/many of his songs.

I'd be grateful if someone could point me to a source for his lyrics...I'm going crazy trying to figure out several unintelligible phrases in some of his songs--most particularly, his song "Candy Man."

Thanks, Scott

Scott....

If you put [john hurt] into the blue search box (upper right), you'll find 4 to get you started. Yes, those are SQUARE brackets.

Scott:

Mississippi John Hurt was and is my first guitar hero, back in 1964. I play a few of his songs, and I got to meet and talk with him back then.

Stefan Grossman publishes a lot of John Hurt songs, in a book, complete with music and TAB. I can't remember if the words are also in his book or not. I'll look it up, when I get home tonight.

I know "Candyman". Let me know what words you don't understand. I'll try to help.

"The Country Blues Guitar" by Stefan Grossman has the music and lyrics to several John Hurt songs, including "Candyman" and "Stack O' Lee." There's also plenty of other great songs in that book. Check it out. The book is published by Oak Publications and contains the tablature, as well as standard notation. Peace.

Stefan Grossman's Guiotar Workshop offers a book with lyrics, tablature, and a CD with about 20 of his songs, including the spoken intro to Coffee Blues, about that "good Maxwell House coffee, thats good to the last drop, you know".

I'm pretty sure there is a Mississippi John Hurt song book available (with words and tablature). Check with Elderly Instruments in Landsing, Michigan (www.elderly.com).
