THE BANGING OF THE WHEELHOUSE DOOR
(Sean Gagnier)

The winter's ice clings to cliff,
To beach, and empty shell;
The cold wind moans on the bones of summer,
And takes a slap at the bell.
And all the boats are upside down,
Or else pulled in to shore:
Parson G, Clarissa Lee,
That used-up, shore-rigged whore;
And old Lindy Lou with her sides stove through,
Her riggings rotten and tore.
There's many a night when the wind's been right,
And the weather's been getting poor,
That I tried to sleep, but I can't sleep,
For the banging of the wheelhouse door.

I lie in bed, like a kid, you know,
And figure she'll go away;
But no such luck, goddam her bones,
So it's down to the kitchen for me.
Find the old pipe and get lit up,
Take the tea down from the shelf;
Ida's been dead since '61,
So I've gotta do for myself.
No sooner the smoke's curling over my book,
The tea's ready to pour;
Then sure as I stand, I can hear Pete McCann,
And the banging of the wheelhouse door.

Pete and me we were heading back,
With half a catch below;
Tryin' to raise the south head light,
And, Jesus, did it blow.
By the time we heard the breakers roar,
We were too close in to shore;
With a prayer and a curse, I felt her lurch,
As the rocks dug in and tore.
And old Lindy Lou fell a cryin' and a dyin',
With the ocean pouring through;
I got knocked off my feet, I couldn't find Pete,
And I don't recall much more.
'Cept the last thing I heard, the sound of a word,
And the banging of the wheelhouse door.

I came to four days later,
In a hospital in St John's;
In a body cast, 'cos I hurt my back,
And I found out Pete was gone.
They never found his body,
Though they searched ten miles of shore;
I'm getting on, my back is gone,
And I really can't fish no more.
And old Lindy Lou with her sides stove through,
Was towed and left on shore.
There's many a night when the wind's been right,
And the weather's been getting poor,
That I tried to sleep but I just couldn't sleep,
For the banging of the wheelhouse door.

It's on Gordon Bok's Return to the Land CD - one of many shipwrecks he has honored with his larynx over the years.

I got to play this song with Sean many times... he was a great lyricist
and I learned much about words/images from him and his cohort Murdoch
Really good to at least read it again.....

"A new seabird blinks at the first circling day
The song of the hunter returns to the bay
It's an eggshell morning in the breakwater spray
and hunger robs you blind"

Here's another 'killer' verse from Sean's 'Circle Harbor Parable"

I have a cassette of Sean Gagnier that I bought from him in Fort Bragg CA many years ago. It includes "Circle Harbor", "The Banging of the Wheelhouse Door", Shoals of Herring", and "San Mescalito", among others, and it is a treasure. In fact, I think I'll digitize it right now.

I still can't listen to that song. Too powerful for this old salt. I can't even read the lyrics without tearing up.

Franz, I'd love to get a copy.... I recorded a couple of songs with him in the 70's in Montreal, but the studio burnt down shortly after and we lost a lot of tapes including that session.... I played 'Out of Sight, Out of Mind' at a festival last summer... maybe we could swap for some of my music.... Ron

How did I miss this one?

Now I'm not sure anyone could survive a whole workshop of these songs but this one is certainly a keeper.

Did Franz S or anybody else ever digitize or otherwise share Sean Gagnier's Circle Harbor tape? I would literally sell my soul for a copy.

Man, oh man, this is fantastic. Knew Sean well during the 1960 when he and Marsha lived in Montreal. Matter of fact, he sang at my wedding in '69. Been trying to get recordings of his songs for the better part of 25 years.
How do I give you my particulars without spreading them all over the net?
Thanks.

Great lyrics, great story let down by a woefully poor melody.

Hello Hello Franz S.,

I'm sorry for stealing your time for this ^^'
But I'm surging the orginal-songs from Sean Gagnier - especially San Mescalito.
I can only find some bad covers.
I know Sean Gagnier was a Canadian (or lived lived a long time I'm Hamilton) singer and many Canadiens liked him and still love his music.
I searched through the internet where people tell they have casessettes or even CD's with this songs -you know? The Banging of the weehlhouse door, San Mescalito etc.
Well, I love music, I you love music -i suppose ^^ and you know the feeling when you have a melody in your head and... damn you just want to know where it comes from !!!
If it possible and if it's not too much trouble.... could it be, that you know somebody that has Sean Gagnier - on which which sound storage ever ^^

... maybe you could ask a friend and he says.. yes I know somebody... many it's an old vinyl shop or something... but if it's to much trouble mean not easy to get it. Than it shouldn't be.

I'm a bit "frustrated" because your the only person I could ask.

Ok, thanks vor the anttention.

I'm 32 and I can't get his few melodies and incompletene melodie/singw out if my head. I'm searching for years now.
I would be so grateful.

Thanks

Rayco, the best way to get an answer is for this to be in a thread of it's own. I pasted your question into a new thread - you'll find it here.

Search on "Gagnier" to find it again, or join Mudcat (send an email to Joe@mudcat.org to join) and you can trace threads and receive messages through the Mudcat site. Good luck!
