Lyr Req: Over the Mountain (Uncle Dave Macon)

There is a simple but very nice song sung by Uncle Dave Macon (and many others, I am sure) whose exact title escapes me. The chorus goes
               It's over, it's over the mountain(s?)
Where the little birds sing in the trees,
And the cabin's all covered with ivy
And my Allie(?) is waiting for me.
Could someone find me the complete lyrics, please?

Hi Tom, I like to sing that song, too. There's a good thread on Uncle Dave songs, titled "Lyr Add: songs by Uncle Dave Macon," that includes several posts on "Over the Mountain." I think this link should get you there. Lyr Add: songs by Uncle Dave Macon

The last bit was supposed to be a blue linkie. Guess I still haven't got down how to make those. But just search the title and you should get there.

Thanks, Martha. I haven't found "Over The Mountain" yet,
but I'm sure that's due to my relative newness to Mudcat searching.

[A]I am always light[D]hearted and easy[A]not a care in the [D]ld have[E]I
For I[A]know I am[D]loved by a col[A]een,that I could'ntfo[E]rget if I tried
She[D]lives far away or the mount[A]ain re the little birds sing on the trees[E]
In a [A]tage all covered in ivy,my eileen is waiting for me,
[Chorus]
It's[D] over it's over the moun[A]tain, where the little birds sing on the[E] trees,
In a[A] cottage all[D] covered in[A] ivy,
My eileen is[E] waiting for[A] me.
[2]
The time I bid good-bye to eileen,is a time I will never forget,
For the tears bubbled up from their slumber,I fancy I see them yet,
They look like the pearls in the ocean,as she wept her tale of joy,
And she said dear boy dont forgen me,till we meet here again or above.
[Chorus]

This is how I sing it, which is more or less how Uncle Dave sang it.

I'm always light-hearted and easy,
Not a care in the world have I.
Because I am loved by an Ollie,
And I couldn't forget if I tried.

She lives far away o'er the mountain,
Where the little bird sings in the tree.
And the cabin's all covered with ivy,
And me Ollie is waiting for me.

Cho.

It's over, it's over the mountain,
Where the little bird sings in the tree.
And the cabin's all covered with ivy,
And me Ollie is waiting for me.

The day I said goodbye to Ollie,
That day I will never forget.
The tears bubbled up from their slumber,
And I fancy I see them yet.

They looked like the pearls of the ocean,
As she cried those tears of love.
She said, Davy my dear, don't forget me,
Till we meet here again or above.

Cho. ...

Yodel twice.

Hope you'll find the earlier thread. It goes into the various versions of this song, other words for "Ollie," etc., that give it an Irish flavor. Don's version seems a hybrid to me, with "colleen" replacing "Ollie." Uncle Dave sang "Ollie."

Wow! What great links to Uncle Dave Macon's songs! I was totally unaware of the "Irish" version that Don produced. I remember only
your version, Martha.I actually have in my possession (somewhere!) a vinyl record of Uncle Dave but I forget the title.I don't believe that "Over the Mountain" is on it.Again, many thanks for the great info.

Yes, the place to be is the link that Stewie provided a couple of posts above this one. We've been working at that one for over eight years now, and there is much of value there.

(Hi, Stewie, we seem not to have crossed paths lately. Give me a note at dale8r AT hotmail DOT com when you get the chance)
