Every year across India a celebration is held by Hindi of every state, a joyous festival celebrating the triumph of Good over Evil.

This year in San Diego it began with a long parade with representative groups from various states in India, each with their own particular festival garb and costumes and dances.

A movie made from photos is available this site if you want to get a sense of the amazing spirit and color of the proceeding. The sound track is not of the event. May take some time to load.

Diwali (also Divali, Dewali, Deepavali)

more great pics from the Boston Globe click, including: #19 "U.S. President Barack Obama lights a traditional oil lamp as Sri Narayanachar Digalakote, Hindu Priest from the Sri Siva Vishnu Temple in Maryland, chants in observance of Diwali, in the East Room at the White House October 14, 2009 in Washington, DC. Obama signed an executive order restoring the White House Advisory Commission and Interagency Working Group, which addresses issues concerning the Asian American and Pacific Islander community during the ceremony."

The nice thing about this festival as I remember it from when I was living in Glasgow was how unceremonious and low-key it was. Little candlelit shrines in the street and quiet private parties. I can't see turning it into showbiz as a step forward.

Thanks for starting this thread, Amos.

Desert Dancer, thanks for the link to the photos. They are incredible! The color!

Also thought-provoking. "A worker's hands are covered with gunpowder as she loads firecrackers..." She's also breathing it, swallowing it, isn't she?

GUEST leeneia, yes, the fireworks-maker is probably breathing the gunpowder. Nothing like OSHA in most parts of the world, unfortunately.

Good versus evil, among the gods and here on earth, was what I was thinking.
