BS: BS/music balance

26 Oct 09 - 04:43 AM (#2752788)
Subject: BS: BS/music balance
From: Richard Bridge

Recently there seem to have been a number of complaints that there is too much BS and not enough music discussion.

It seems to me that the proportion of BS threads to music threads has been falling. Is there any obvious factor that will have been reducing the number and proportion of BS threads?

"Recently there seem to have been a number of complaints that there is too much BS and not enough music discussion."

How peculiar. I can't understand complaints about the BS section. You need to actively click on a tiny link, or deliberately scroll all the way to the bottom in order to find it. Unless you're actually interested in looking in on it yourself, it's a bit like complaining about what other people seem be doing elsewhere.

Maybe there are fewer because guests are no longer officially allowed to start BS threads.

Discussion certainly goes on a lot longer on BS threads. I suppose that's because it's easier to achieve a resolution on the music ones - less controversy.

Hmmm - shouldn't this not be BS?

I think that one of the great features of Mudcat is that there is this diversity. It's what makes it so much more interesting than, say, the Beeb Folk and Acoustic Board, which has such restrictive rules and arcane modding that it's almost impossible to discuss wider issues - that's why I don't post there anymore: it's just too frustrating.

There is 'Music' and there is 'BS'.... take your pick... one or both.. what the heck does it matter??? Who actually cares which gets used most as long as we are happy with what we are doing personally??? Does it need to have a balance?...

Well you certainly need balance if you suffer from Vertigo

One factor might be that threads are more liable to get amalgamated these days if they are dealing with the same issue.

Yes Spleen Cringe, I know there are exceptions, but generally speaking........ compare the number of postings.

I think a healthy ratio of leaden BullShite is essential as Mudcat's ballast. Too top-heavy with the rarified 'intelectool' discussions in the airy 'up there', and it'd quite obviously topple over to sink and never rise again.

As in work / life balance, I am going to apply this question to myself, personally.

There appears to be far more bullshit in my life than there is music.

The BS has given rise to many songs, poetry, and innumerous discussions of important, insightful and informative discourse in a diverse range of subjects, historical and topical.

Unfortunately, the real bullshit has suffered because of same.

Ah, I keep my proportions better by basically singing all the time, even if it's just to myself...

People who have an interest in folk music or music in general tend to be more sensitive to
social issues, particularly in folk music. To try to separate ideological statements from an artist's perspective is like gutting the nutrients out of food.

Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie have always had an ideological bent. This inspired their careers. The same can be said for members of the Dixie Chicks. The problem is when ideology runs away with the program. Music and preaching don't mix too well.

The BS section is important because there are many Mudcatters who do care about what's going on in the world today. Why shouldn't they be allowed to express their opinions?

You can't separate art from people's feelings and opinions. Artists are not robots.

Remember the good old days before the separation? The recurring argument then was that the non-music threads were overwhelming the 'good' threads. People assiduously counted the pros and cons. Nowadays it takes only a glance.

On the other hand I have never understood someone complaining at the lack of a category- if we want more = or fewer - threads of a certain kind, we can start one ourselves.

The problem I think is that many threads 'above the line' are really BS threads with music as a point of departure.

Mudcat used to have lots of interesting discussions of songs, tunes, etc. Not so much of that these days. And I'm as much to blame as anyone else for this, but it's still a problem.
