Coyotes are becoming a huge problem a lot of places since "we" have encroached heavily upon their turf AND they are getting very bold! My nephew David was in a tree stand, bow hunting, a few weeks back and 4 Coyotes came up and circled the tree. No amount of yelling and waving would move them. Fortunately he had his cell phone and called a friend who also happened to have Dodge 4wd Diesel pickup as David does as well. Brad was able to drive into the edge of the woods where David was and even with the noise of the Diesel, the flashing lights, and honking, they remained. Brad had a shotgun and fired out of the cab window, not aiming at them but just hoping to scare them. They moved off about 40 feet or so then stood and watched. David was able to make a drop to the truck bed and slide into the cab, but even as he did so they came forward again. Lots of small animals missing in nearby neighborhoods as well. Spaw |

She was part of the Youth Mentorship program of the conference, which pairs up young folk/roots musicians with a more experienced musician for skills building and "learning the ropes." I remember being blown away by how directed she was. I think she must have been 17, and she was writing incredible songs, not to mention having quite a head on her shoulders. I can't imagine being so sure of what I wanted to do at that age. I've watched from afar as she made connections with some fantastic musicians, worked really hard to record and release her first album, and then recently started on her first big tour. It was so vicariously satisfying to see such incredible talent coming into bloom. So this morning's news was a huge shock. It's a huge loss for the folk community here in Canada. There is no doubt in my mind that she was on the path to success - it's just heartbreaking to think how young she was and how much she had too look forward too. My condolences to her family and close friends. RIP Taylor, your star is still shining. |

They seldon get much over 20 pounds and rarely (if ever) work in pairs or packs. They are loners and run from people as quickly as they can. I suspect that the dogs responsible for this attack were either feral dogs or coyote hybrids. Possibly mixed with wolf or feral domesticated breeds or all three. |

They also are bigger than the 20 lbs. that PDQ sees, but he lives in the desert southwest. But I have never seen a 60 pounder like they are talking about in the Maritimes. My guess is that they have learned not to be afraid of humans. Damn shame, and a tough way to go. In all my visits to Toronto, I don't think I have met Taylor, but it sure seems that we lost a beauty of a singer. My heart goes out to friends and family. Mick |

Regarding the coyote question, the eastern coyote has been shown to be a hybrid of the western coyote and eastern wolf and weighs around 50 lbs. Coyotes usually hunt in pairs. I heard an animal behaviourist on the radio today saying that this kind of attack on humans is extremely rare and that it was very likely that these were young and practicing their hunting skills or were sick. |

We saw several moose but no coyote. The coyote are not native to Cape Breton and have only appeared in the last three or four decades, but they have multiplied quickly. They have cross bred with timber wolves and large dogs before arriving from farther west and are much larger than their prarie cousins. They also live and hunt in family packs, more like wolves than coyotes. The only previous incident in Nova Scotia of an attack on humans was on the same trail. Such a sad end to a girl with a big future! Rest in peace! |

Bob Bancroft, a Nova Scotia wildlife biologist, said coyotes shy away from humans. But not all animals - particularly young, inexperienced coyotes in parks - view humans as predators. "This is probably just a couple of coyotes that saw something vulnerable and went for it," he said. "It's horrible. It's not something you would expect at all." Coyotes in the region are larger and behave somewhat differently than their counterparts in Western Canada, he said. Large males in Nova Scotia can weigh up to 60 pounds. Simon Gadbois, a professor at Dalhousie University who studies animal behaviour, said hikers should always be vigilant and aware of their surroundings. Should a hiker unintentionally surprise a coyote or other animal, Gadbois has simple, potentially life-saving advice: Never act like prey."The worst thing you can do is start running away," he said. "Wave your arms, shout, just show that you mean business basically and most animals will think twice." |

I had heard of her as an up-and-comer and was charmed by her music and person, as she ventured out on her first Maritime tour. She gamely played through to a nearly empty room (last minute booking, she commented with a rueful smile), a treat for the few in attendance. What a shock it was to hear her name on the news today as the victim of this tragedy. Tuesday was a beautiful day in the Maritimes--I went hiking myself in fact--and obviously no one saw this coming. I'd sure appreciate it if people didn't use this tragedy as a platform for venting their opinions for/against hunting, trapping, coyotes, animal rights, "greenies" etc etc (the comments here are pretty mild compared to those at the CBC news story). I am not referring to informative posts; it is worth knowing about the difference between eastern and western coyotes. There's talk on Maplepost "to have the Canadian Folk Music Awards rename the Young Performer of the Year Award in Taylor's memory". A fitting idea, to honour one lost so young who had already made such an impression. She is a nominee for the award this year. Sadly Bill |

I'd be surprised if there were wolves roaming around Cape Breton but coyotes in Maine are certainly in the 50 pound range. It is surprising that a pair of coyotes would dare to attack an adult but if the verdict of "coyotes" is confirmed hikers should be appropriately cautioned. I hope they do change the name of the award. i live in Colorado, too, and the coyotes average closer to thirty pounds from what I've seen, about the same as my dog who is thirty-five. The one coyote I saw when living in Connecticut was much bigger...we thought it was a German Shepherd at first, so it had to have been at least 40-50 pounds. |

My thanks to the hikers who called 911, the RCMP officer who first arrived on the scene and did his utmost to help her, as well as the incredible doctors and nurses at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Halifax who tried desperately to save her. I wish to also thank RCMP's Victims Services, and the Atlantica Hotel who've gone out of their way to support us during this difficult time. There are no words to describe my grief. Taylor was my shining light, my baby, my confidante and best friend. My world is turned upside down and forever transformed without her. I don't know how to move forward from here but I know that she would want that for me and I will try to do that in her memory and celebrate her life in the way she lived it-- with passion, commitment and an unbridled loving heart. I've noticed that the media have often mentioned that Taylor was hiking alone when the coyote attack occurred. I want people to know that Taylor was a seasoned naturalist and well versed in wilderness camping. She loved the woods and had a deep affinity for their beauty and serenity. Tragically it was her time to be taken from us so soon. We take a calculated risk when spending time in nature's fold-- it's the wildlife's terrain. When the decision had been made to kill the pack of coyotes, I clearly heard Taylor's voice say, "please don't, this is their space". She wouldn't have wanted their demise, especially as a result of her own. She was passionate about animals, was an environmentalist, and was also planning to volunteer at the Toronto Wildlife Centre in the coming months. Her loss is an incomprehensible tragedy on so many levels-- but everybody's messages of love and support and desire to keep her memory and music alive will help me to move forward and honour her short but full and vibrant life. America are generally larger than their southern cousins. I've heard that North Dakota coyotes are pretty big compared to Southern California coyotes. Funny thing, last night as I was leaving work around 6 PM there was a lone coyote running back and forth in a fenced runway next to a concrete drainage channel in the middle of our industrial area in Santa Fe Springs (on the Whittier border). It was bigger than my Sheltie who is about 35 lbs. Too bad about the young singer. We haven't had any coyote casualties around here, just couple of mountain lion casualties. (And a whole lot of human casualties...the most dangerous animal of all.) Joe |

Taylor Josephine Stephanie Luciow, a promising 19-year-old folk singer from Toronto who performed under the name Taylor Mitchell, was attacked by two coyotes as she set out for a hike in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, one of Eastern Canada's leading tourist destinations. She died late Tuesday night in Halifax, where she had been airlifted for treatment. The reaction of Ms. Mitchell's grief-stricken mother was perhaps more unusual: Emily Mitchell issued a statement to news organizations in which she asked authorities to spare any coyotes involved in the attack. "We take a calculated risk when spending time in nature's fold — it's the wildlife's terrain," she wrote. "When the decision had been made to kill the pack of coyotes, I clearly heard Taylor's voice say, 'Please don't, this is their space.' She wouldn't have wanted their demise, especially as a result of her own." Even before the statement appeared, a Parks Canada conservation officer had already killed one coyote that was behaving aggressively. And a police officer who came to Ms. Mitchell's aid thought he had shot and injured a second coyote. Attacks by coyotes, even minor ones, on people are very unusual. I stopped into the Bridge Street Cafe in Sackville NB this summer and was touched to see a framed copy of the poster advertising her show there--the one about three people attended--permanently mounted on a pillar. The CFMA's never did rename the Young Performer award--I suppose they had their reasons. Personally I was inspired by meeting her to want to make something more of my own patchy music career, such as it is or has been...thanks Taylor. |
