A personal milestone, of sorts

Today (as those who've known me for a while, or are on Facebook know) is my birthday. I'm 68 - born just before Pearl Harbor.

In and of itself, that doesn't mean much. Birthdays are a big deal until you reach legal age, and again after 70 when each one proves you beat the odds a little. In between, you'd rather ignore them.

But the significance of this one is that for my eighteenth birthday, when I was a freshman in college at the beginning of the "great folk scare," my parents, who had tried and failed to get me to learn what they considered a "real" instrument, humored me by getting me a cheap guitar. That means that....

I HAVE SPENT EXACTLY HALF A CENTURY TRYING TO LEARN TO PLAY THE *&%() THING RIGHT!

I've had some fun, though. Made a few bucks now and then. Spent them on better guitars than I had any business having. Made some interesting friends.

I hope I can string it out as long as Doc or Mr. Monroe or Ian Tyson.

Peter.

Now, Peter, if this thread ends up full of birthday wishes, I'm going to have to move it to the non-music section. If it's guitar stuff, then that's another matter. Time will tell - but in the meantime, have a happy birthday.

So, after half a century, DID you learn how to play the darn thing right?

perhaps a better question might be ... can you tune the darned thing yet?

I've heard him play, Bob. The answer to your question is.....a matter of opinion.

What do you mean, 'play the darn thing right?'

Surely there is no one right way to play an instrument as multifarious as the guitar.

If you are still playing, then you have been doing it right, because it must give you pleasure.

I once heard a story from Ireland that sometimes the Little People will give a struggling musician a choice: to play to their own satisfaction, but noone else will like it, or to play to satisfy other people but never to be content themselves. Perhaps you inadvertently made the second choice [the Little People are now very techno-conscious and often send emails at the bottom of which in text size point 8 it says: if you do not want to receive from us the gift of playing to satisfy other people but never to be content yourself please tick this box] and everyone else enjoys your playing.

Congrats good buddy!
I started before you too and I still can't make a barred "F".
Of course, with the Taylor I don't have to. The neck is just right so I can wrap my thumb around it to close the low "E" string.

Congrats on getting to your half century of guitar playing. Always sounds good to me.

Oh, and many happy returns - live long, die happy.

I have spent 'almost' half a century (49 years) avoiding learning to play guitar.

When I was 21, a friend offered to 'show me some things' on HIS guitar. He had me place my fingers just so..."no, like THIS"...and then said, "that's called a 'barred F', practice that and I'll show you some more"
By the time I got the joke, I had taken up autoharp.

Peter, I do have to say that whenever I think of sox and guns and cats, I think of you. When Roger Himler sang "In My Socks With a Gun" at the Getaway this year, I thought of you.

with deep respect,

-Joe-
