Has anyone figured out the chords to When My Rowboat Comes In? There's a key change or something in there that's kickin' my but-tocks.

A variant of "When My Dreamboat Comes Home"?

Sorry, I should have attributed. It's a Steve Goodman song from his Affordable Art album. One of my favorite SG songs.

Thanks,

I know the song you mean, deepdoc, and it's a favorite of mine. Such a brave, comforting song from a man facing leukemia.

Just a guess here: Are you playing it in D? Do you hit a snag at the word 'sun'? Try an F#m. I think that's it or it's pretty close.

If you are playing in another key, use a chord wheel and follow the directions to change to another key.

The post above wouldn't go when I put a URL in it, so here's a link to a chord wheel, in case you don't have one:

Hmm! There may be more to those chords than I thought at midnight last night. Watch this spot!

I was more tired than I thought. It's not bubblyrat, it's deepdoc.

I don't know how skilled you are, deepdoc, so I'm going to state that the key is D, the time is 4/4, and often in the song the last note of the measure does not fit with the chord you've got going. Therefore, you have to let up on the guitar in some fashion in order to avoid ugly clashes.

p.u. stands for 'pick-up notes' . Don't play a chord the first time.

What follows are chords for what I can remember of the song. Is there more? Deepdoc, could you post further lyrics?

p.u.    D
When my row-boat comes in, there'll be room e-nough to ride
         Em
when the seas are rough in the high-est tide
         F#m       D Em    D Em   D
when the sun comes up on the o-ther side.

      Em                                 D
Ev-ry-thing will be all right when we go row-ing.

[Let's hope the chord names and words stay lined up when I submit.]

heck, they moved

row D
seas Em
sun F#m
up D
on the Em
oth (of 'other') D
-ther Em
side D
-thing Em
row D

By the way, when I said that the key of D, above, I merely meant that that's the one I'm working in. Steve Goodman might have used some other key, and it can be changed by you.

Wow! Thanks for the great effort. I'm at work now, but when I get home I'll give it a go. I have just started noodling with this one, so I'm recollecting here. I am playing along with the mp3, so I'm using the key he played in, though I probably won't stay there once I have it worked out. As I recall, I'm using C form, but can't remember if I just capo'ed up 2 from D. Either way, you've likely given me enough to 'rassle it down. I don't do a lot of key changes, but then, neither do a lot of other pickers (that I listen to).

Don't worry about lining up the chords/words. I'm able to figure out where the change happens, and if it sounds bad, I can scootch it to the right spot in my head.

I will print out the chord wheel - easier and looks better than counting on my fingers....

Once again, thanks for your most excellent assistance!

Disclaimer: My ears may have misinformed me on one or two words, but I think they are good. I checked chord spacing in preview mode, so I hope it translates.

Here's the chords I have down to the problem area (??). SG plays in C (no capo) on the album.

         C
On a stormy night when the clouds roll in
                                                 G
To hide the lucky stars that I am under

In the smoke the sky makes the heavens bright
                                                                   C
When the lightnin' strikes so long before the thunder

                C
When the rain is done and I'm all alone
                               C7                        F
In the silence of the dawn that follows after
                                                 C
Then I need someone who can find the sun
          G                                             C
And chase away my sorrow with her laughter
                         F
        When my rowboat comes in

There'll be room enough to ride
                           C
        Though the seas are rough

        In the highest tide
                       ??
        When the sun comes out

        On the other side

        Everything will be all right

        When we go rowing.

As I find my way down a stoney road

When my old guitar is my one true companion

You can hear me play every song I know

From the mountains to the bottom of the canyons

Now they say that time is a precious jewel

Now I'm lookin' for some moments I can borrow

And if my lucky star won't shine tonight

I'd rather take my chances on tomorrow.

        When my rowboat comes in

There'll be room enough to ride

        Though the seas are rough

        In the highest tide

        When the sun comes out

        On the other side

        Everything will be all right

        When we go rowing.

        When my rowboat comes in

There'll be room enough to ride

        Though the seas are rough

        In the highest tide

        When the sun comes out

        On the other side

        Everything will be all right

        When we go rowing.

        hmmm hmmmm ....

What do you think?

I'm handicapped because I can't remember the melody for the verses. It could be that the verses are in C.

However, I've sounded out the tune for the refrain ("When my rowboat comes in...") using your chords. What you have there is a refrain in the key of F.

That might have been a good key for Steve Goodman's voice, but it is not a favorite among guitarists. I'm an amateur, and I don't play in F. the hand positions are just too awkward. But I understand how, when listening to a recording, you want to stick to the same key that you are hearing.

But if you want to stick with F, then a Gm is nice beginning at 'seas.'

The mystery chord for 'sun' is Am.

oth- - F
ther - Gm
side - F
thing - experiment with C and Gm
we go - Gm
rowing - F

Once you've done that, try applying those chords to the verses. If B's remain flat in the verses, they are almost certainly also in the key of F.

==============
I hope you weren't thinking that only I IV and V chords could be used. The belief that folk songs only use I IV and V chords is just something to tell the children. Kind of the like that the stork brings babies and thunder is the sound of angels bowling.

Could someone lay out the whole song? It looks interesting.

@EBarnacle - The first verse and chorus give you the chords for the whole song...is that what you mean by 'lay out'?

@leenia - I think I'm getting closer. This *sounds* close to my ear, but I don't know music well enough to be sure if I mean G# or A flat or something else. Try:

row - F
seas - C7
sun - G# (?)
oth- - D# (?)
thing - A#7 (?) (experiment with C and Gm)
rowing - F

Let me know if I botched the notations.

Wish I could get the mp3 out there, but jail's not my thing ;)

Actually, the iTunes store has a 30 sec clip that has almost all the troublesome part, and AmazonMP3 has 30 sec of a bit more of the first verse. It might get your tune memory tweaked a bit.

" There's a key change or something in there that's kickin' my but-tocks."

I believe the "key change " is actually a modulation.

The verse is a rather simple tune, perhaps a varient of the one used in "Me and Bobbi McGee" and Steve Goodman sings it in the key of C.

The chorus is in the key of F which is a bit confusing since the F maj is also the IV chord in the verse. It is the tonic (or I) in the chorus.

I get what you're saying about modulation vs key change; it makes sense. Like many lazy(?) players, I've always ignored the modulation in Bobby McGee due to "technical difficulties". It's a bit harder to ignore it in this song. I haven't paid enough attention to the basic music theory in a long time, so I pulled out my Circle of Fifths and other notes and I'm getting back into it.

I think I'm mostly there, but still some work to do. Enjoyable work, though. Thanks to everyone who chimed in, and feel free to keep chiming if the mood hits you.

Anybody wanna modulate? It is now legal between consenting adults, and some states even recognize it.

Here's what ya do.

Say the verse is in C and the refrain is in F. (I don't know for sure, I'm just hypothesizing.)

1. We play the verse in C.

2. We stop and think about the next key, which is F.

3. What are the notes in F? They are F G A B-flat C D E F

4. What is the fifth note of that scale? It happens to be C.

5. In your mind, turn the note C to the chord C. Then modify it to the C7 chord. That's the chord we will use to modulate.

6. Between the verse and refrain, strum some chords, ending on a C7 chord. Bring out the dissoance a bit. Then play an F chord. It will feel like you have 'landed' and are ready to sing again. Only this time you are in F.

Congratulations. You have just modulated.

For future use, memorize this:

"To modulate, play the five-seven chord of the new key."

I store this sentence in my brain right next to 'Righty tighty, lefty loosey."

But I don't think the song "When my rowboat comes in" changes key between verse and refrain. I still think the chord in 'sun' is just a good old A minor.

The normal chords for F are

F Gm Am B-flat C Dm

and I bet they would work.

If Steve had flirted at some point with 'the belly-dance minor,' then he could have played an A. If you get stuck, try an A.

Subtle modulations may not be especially common in Folk Music, but they have been used effectively on occasions.

Ian and Sylvia go back and forth between the keys of C and G in their classic version of "Captain Woodstock's Courtship", a guitar run hear and there helps obscure the change.

I assume that Sylvia's voice was best in another key than Ian's when she sang lead rather than her usual harmony parts.

Bill Clifton used subtle modulation once in a while. His version of "Blue Ridge Mountain Blues" (done years befor Doc Watson's) has a key change which has him playing a guitar break in a different key than the rest of the song.

Both Country and Pop songs tend to use an abrupt modulation such as singing the song through the first time in one key and immediatly doing it again one whole step higher.

'immediatly doing it again one whole step higher.'

As in 'Delta Dawn what's that flower you have on?' Icky song...
