Heard the Quebe Sisters Yet?

From their website:

The Quebe Sisters Band

When Grace, Sophia and Hulda Quebe (pronounced kway-bee) take to a stage to play and sing their vintage-style three-part harmony, audiences are mesmerized. Add the swinging rhythm guitar of World Champion fiddler Joey McKenzie and the upright bass of Drew Phelps, and the Quebe Sisters Band becomes a force of nature.

I saw them on Marty Stuart's great TV show. They are the real deal!

I played with these delightful ladies at a festival and at a recordshop/radio show. They are an absolute treat! Superb singers, great fiddlers. Tight and elegant harmonies. Absolutely TOP SHELF.

Oh, and pretty as you please, too! That always helps!

Jed (and others) are right. Not only are they great musicians, they are just so NICE! That also always helps.

I've got an autographed picture right behind me, and a couple of CDs within reach when I need to hear them again.

Highly Recommended. Dale

Saw them at the Philadelphia Folk Fest a couple of years ago. They were amazing. One of the finest "surprises" I've come across at Philly in a long time.

Really enjoyed the harmonies I heard on the clips on their website. Give them a few years for their voices to mature and they are going to just get better and better!

Acting on advice from Dale, I sought out the Quebe Sisters at a Folk Alliance a couple of years ago. Found them in one of the guerrilla showcases, unamplified in a small hotel room. Standing next to Mare Winningham (a fine songwriter and singer as well as actress)and Tim Crouch (world class fiddler and friend of Joey McKenzie), I enjoyed one of the best concerts I heard at Folk Alliance. They are amazing right now and will just get better. Joey is due some credit for the way he works with the girls. He is a teacher and mentor as well as guitarist. But the girls are loaded with talent. You can shut your eyes and be knocked out by the music. Open your eyes and enjoy the music and charm of three beautiful young ladies and become entranced by the perfect unison of three fiddle bows. Not to be missed.

I saw them the first time at the festival Jed mentioned above and they've been starring on my iPod ever since. Fine musicians and a great act.

Grace sings lead as I recall.

No one sings lead. They sing in 3 part harmony, it seems all of the time. I never one of them solo.

But who takes the melody line, the lead voice? One of those 3 parts is the lead.

I wasn't going to mention it myself, as I don't have a particularly well tuned ear, but I hear it like Jed. They always sing as a trio, as did the Andrews Sisters, and I find their voices indistinguishable.

Perhaps in time I could sort them out. I have friends whose voices I could never pick out of the mix. Now, years later, I hear them and can catch all three voices and wonder even at the fact that in the beginning they all sounded alike to me!

But back to the QSB, their site does not indicate which may be taking which part. This might be by design. Perhaps it is part of the magic that we the listeners just hear that wonderful blend.

Try writing to them, WYSIWYG, I bet you'll get an answer!

Here's one person's view, probably after consulting them!

If the three Quebe sisters never sang a note, their fiddle work would still make this a noteworthy band. But, oh, when they sing! It is heavenly harmony to hear how the sisters' voices flow in three-part precision. Sophia delivers most of the melody, although Grace does her share of singing the lead part, as well. Hulda has the difficult task of weaving in the high harmony.

They're over in the UK right now....and I'm off to see them in the Luminaire, Kilburn tomorrow.

Really looking forward to this one! The musicianship in this band is as refreshing as anything I've heard in a long while.

There's a YouTube which shows one of the sisters singing a couple of solo verses....not sure which one it is though.

I am glad to see this thread still going.

These ladies are wonderful. I stopped by the studio a month or two ago when they wer recording a new album. Playing and singing live, just like they do on stage!

Just come back from Cambridge Folk Festival and their CD was the only one I bought, (I enjoyed loads of others but usually wait until I get back to get better deals on the CDs..but couldn't resist!) They were a brilliant act to watch and hear...the whole performance was very polished and enjoyable...put the CD on and it takes you into another era...wonderful.
I used to sing in a 3 harmony female band and I would have been very proud to sound like this, very tight harmonies, great arrangements and excellent tuning...The fiddles were also equally spot on re harmonies, not just doing the all playing the same thing...some very hard work as well as talent involved in this group. Love them and they even looked brilliant too, according to the male audience watching with me!
