02 Nov 09 - 12:36 PM (#2758015) Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: LesB This is an interesting case of thread creep. The thread started by Aeola mentioning he had heard a rumour "I hear the RAFA club is organising a folk club, with support from some Bothy members." and ended up as a geography lesson. I asked around at The Bothy last night & got a few blank expressions until I spoke to Pete Rimmer & he said that Kevin Bargan, who is in a group called the Travelling People (who had a club in Formby 30yrs ago) was thinking of starting a club & Pete offered to pop down & do a spot if required. Cheers Les (from Southport nr Formby, not Chorlton nr Manchester):-) |

02 Nov 09 - 01:01 PM (#2758034) Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: GUEST,Clive Pownceby I used to play at Formby RAFA Club regularly with a Ceilidh band a good few years back. Concert room, big stage-mirror ball set-up and you'd need a PA - maybe it's planned to be a concert-type club eventually? It's by Freshfield station, not Formby too! (Merseyrail Northern line) All rather confusing. Kevin has bags of experience though, and I wish him well. |
|
02 Nov 09 - 01:22 PM (#2758044) Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: GUEST,Shimrod Right! It's all clear now - there's a Les in Formby (not in Chorlton) and a Les in Chorlton (not in Formby) ... and another one ... possibly? Oh yes, a Villan (aka Les). Phew! I'm glad we've cleared that up! |
|
02 Nov 09 - 02:35 PM (#2758098) Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Aeola LES clear this up. If you want to promote interest then make a mistake!!!! OOPS! should have said 'deliberate' mistake. Anyway I've enjoyed the comments etc and as Clive says there is a big room with stage but the Folk Club will be held in the bar. There's a Tetley mild on in good fettle for 2.05 per pint. I hope Kevin makes it a success, I will support him as best I can! Just so theree's no mistake where Formby is!!!!!--- It's the home of the rare red squirrels and natterjack toads!! So from rumour to geographic and wildlife!! |

02 Nov 09 - 03:16 PM (#2758132) Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: TheSnail I've looked and, as far as I can tell, there isn't a Formby in New England. There is, however a New England Guest House in Formby. Even if there was a Formby in New England, Formby would still be Formby which, as it happens, is in Merseyside although, when my father was growing up in Freshfield, it was in Lancashire. It's been there for over a thousand years and is under no obligation to change its name. If there was a Formby in Massachusetts, it would be called Formby, Massachusetts. But there isn't. |

02 Nov 09 - 06:05 PM (#2758276) Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Dave the Gnome Eeeee - Freshfield. Not heard that for donkeys. My mate Dave Taylor took off in about 3rd year of secondary school to a Catholic seminary which, if memory serves, was at Freshfied. We went to visit him the following year and very shortly after he gave up the idea of becoming a priest. Dunno if it was owt to do with our visit but we did meet some very nice girls on Southport Pleasure Beach:-) On the subject of being precise with the location, surely just the mention of the Bothy should have given the game away? I work on the basis that if you do not know the area you are unlikely to visit the club anyway - Here in the UK they do tend to be a bit more local than than the huge distances travelled in the US. I know there are exceptions but why do we need to specify every little detail just so people on the other side of the country, or even world, can say 'It's too far'? :-P Cheers DeG |

02 Nov 09 - 06:32 PM (#2758293) Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: Rasener Many times, mudcatters are visiting an area that is not familiar to them, and it helps if they know where the club is, just in case they want to pop in. Anyway its polite to say where you are. Unless of course you don't want to see people. |

03 Nov 09 - 04:54 AM (#2758503) Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: nager We started up a folk club recently near Newcastle at a place just south of Cardiff. It is also just across the lake from Swansea. Toronto is three miles away to the south and Wallsend and Hexham are close by too. I am talking about Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia of course but it would have been fun to leave that out and imagine all the heads being scratched... |
|
03 Nov 09 - 04:59 AM (#2758504) Subject: RE: New Folk Club From: nager I should also have mentioned that if you are coming from the south take the scenic route and drive through Penrith, Londonderry and Richmond. If you take a wrong turning and arrive at Aberdeen, then tun back and go via Stroud!! |

LOL (but I do so agree that if you're going to post details, full details are what are needed). |
