Well, the Mystery Singers in Penkhull(Stoke-on-Trent, England) are starting practising on Wednesday 11, with a view to going out round the pubs a bit before Christmas. Will publish where and when, when   we've decided.Anyone care to join us, get in touch.
So, what is anyone else doing? Can we make this an ongoing thread for carol-related activity. Let's hear what the big boys in Shefield are up to, etc.

Here are the Mystery Singers last year(our Sheila's nephew filmed us practising and then out in a pub; he thought we were called the Secret Singers, hence the titles). In the pub(the White Lion) we are singing the famous Cranbrook(Ilkley Moor)setting of "While Shepherds Watched". We multi-task and drink beer at the same time(well, some of us do).

Will be Wassailing at the Good Intent, Rochester Kent, UK on 19 and 20 December. Did last year as well.

When I was still in Virginia, I would load up my Isuzu trooper with a gaggle of giggling girls (daughters and their high school friends) and we would go out and commit drive by singings. Usually to shut ins (house bound elderly). I miss those days.

This Christmas Eve will be the twenty third year my family and friends have gathered to sing carols outside of the women's prison in Cranston, Rhode Island (USA). Please consider this an open invitation to join us at seven o'clock PM for approximately an hour. We meet regardless of weather unless it is DANGEROUS.

The women really appreciate the singing and join us by coming to their windows or out onto the barred in porch areas. We are not over rehearsed and we mix the traditional carols with the popular ones. No one understands the misfit Rudolph of red nosed fame more than the prodigal sister or brother and nothing gets a bigger laugh than "he sees you when you're sleeping - he knows when you're awake - he knows if you've been bad or good so be good for goodness sake."

And the very best version I have ever heard of "Silent Night" was one sub-freezing Christmas Eve when a woman sang to us through the window bars of her solitary cell. It was pure gospel through razor wire.

You can find more information at: http://myspace.com/joycekatzberg

And may I wish you all a season of holy days that exceed your expectations for expressions of kindness and generosity.

In peace and song,
Joyce

We usually do caroling for two weeks, hitting nine or ten nursing homes. I really enjoy it.

I got the strongest tingle from that description. It is true gem of a statement.

In the town where I live, Father Christmas used to go round on a sleigh with a bunch of carol singers. Three years running he was stoned by the locals then, it was stopped after he was dragged from his sleigh and beaten up.

Merry Christmas!

Looks like there's going to be an attempt to revive old carol singing in the Saddleworth area this year. We have attended a rehearsal to get a core of singers together to do this.

Wild Shepherds will be negotiating the streets and taverns of West Kirby and Hoylake on Merseyside, this year as usual. We raise money for special schools. Last year we managed something in the region of £500.

Plus, I haven't managed to do it for a few years. But I'm hoping this year to make every single carol at every single carol sing at the Royal in Dungworth.

ah, yes, drive-by singings...
we used to do similar in our rural neighborhood.
we would meet at the bar/cafe' and form up car
pools. sadly the place is no longer open in the
winter. Since most of my song books burned up
i would have a difficult time re-creating this
event.

one of my favorite songs to sing in this event
is "We're gonna Sing" by Connie Kaldor and Bim.
It contains the names of many carols in the chorus:

We're gonna sing Joy to the World
We're gonna sing Hark the Herald,
We're gonna sing Deck the Halls and It Came up on a Midnight Clear.
We're gonna sing every Christmas carol that we can remember
We're gonna wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year.

Damn Open Mike

That is a sad story. Cafe/Bar closed in winter. Your place burned down. Song books lost. Good grief! You need a little jolly this Christmas. What are you plans?

Really would love to learn that We're Gonna Sing.
