Mudcat Tavern: The real thing!

Just over three years ago I bought this house which had been converted into a private club. All the ground floor walls were removed and a dance floor and 30 foot bar was installed. It is located in Phoenixville Pennsylvania.

I got it fairly cheaply because it needed renovation. I had been having problems with the local authorities regarding getting permits for renovating the property.

Now my lawyer says I can go ahead and do a lot of the work. What needs to be done is some plumbing, electrical & heating work and lots of cleanup and painting.

Here's the deal....

We choose a weekend, anyone who is willing to help turns up and we provide food and booze for the weekend. You help with the work during the day and well have a couple of song circles in the evenings.

Then we can use it as The Mudcat Tavern.

What do you think? - Any takers? - Any suggestions?(polite ones that is) If we get enough interest we can move on to settling the details.

Bert.

Hi, Bert,

That's an intriguing idea. Phoenixville is slightly west of Philadelphia? I think it is probably about 4 hours away from us. We've gone farther for a weekend. I suspect Duane & I would be able to help out. It might make sense to schedule a few different dates. Even if we can't all be together, we'll get some work done. Funny you'd bring it up. I had just been doing some thinking of my own. I'd like, at some time in the future, to consider running a kind of folk music bed & breakfast, perhaps near Sandy's, to support events, etc. Could be fun.

best,

bbc

Bert I'd love to help but Nova Scotia's a little far away, I know, I know talk's cheap.

Gads, Bert how I'd love to come. There's one small thing between us: a continent. I hope you get enough takers,

Hell, buddy, I am a journeyman Carpenter. I would be happy to give a weekend. Long as we can sing at night, it is fine with me. Sounds like fun. As long as a date that works for me is chosen, we could have fun. Let's talk about this.

Bert, it's the Mudcat dream, ain't it. I hope you're gonna continue the song circles after you open. I wish I could make it for the painting bee but, like Margarita, I'm a continent away. (Hey, there's a great name for a pub hidden up there: "The Mudcat's Dream"--in case you haven't already paid to have a sign made for the Bide-a-wee Tavern. --seed

As long as I have money enough for gas, and I don't end up with a job working weekends, I'll help. Any opportunity to meet folks, play music, and collect that hug from Mick...

Barb, a B&B sounds great. "Welcome. Dinner is served at 6 PM, and we start playing music at 8. You will find a copy of "Rise Up Singing" in your bed table, and they're for sale at the office if you'd care to purchase your own copy."

Duane & I have thought of B & B or some kind of camp/retreat center. Might be right up our alley. We'll probably need to wait a few years, till the kids are out of school. Doesn't hurt to plan, though.

Bert, I'd love to. I've got family in Jersey clamoring for a visit, it would work out nicely. I'd thought about going up the middle of September, and would be happy to spend a chunk of a weekend hammering, painting, singing. I do some of my best singing with a paint roller in my hand. Somehow, show tunes work well on such occasions. If I bring my banjo, can someone show me the way around a chord or two?

Keep us posted.

I've built sets before. Surely a tavern can't be THAT much different... Let's see... Wyoming to Philadelphia...hmmmm... Well, in MY world, anything can happen, so keep us aware of how this goes and maybe, maybe, maybe....

Bert,

Please post the date publicly. I do not easily commit myself to more work (seems like I dredge up enough of it on my own), but I keep getting more spontaneous in my later years here, so if I know, I might come.

good luck, Tom

Bert - do you have a date/weekend in mind? We're only in Wisonsin....and could use a reason to leave. My friend rehabs houses for a living; if its not a weekend he's got his kids, its possible.

Otherwise, when you're up and running, you could count on customers, too. Plus, there's always something in need of a ittle repair. Found that out when I bought my house!

It's looking like sometime in September at the moment. I'll fix the date as soon as I can.

When we are up and running we will welcome lots of customers. We couldn't afford the liquor license so Mudcatters will be our guests. Like Mudcat it will be completely non-profit. Lots of good food and good music.

We haven't decided on opening times yet but I think it will be like our home, neighbors and Mudcatters will not be turned away.

Bert.

September would be great for Glenn and I. He works the weekends in the summer, but will go back to having at least one day of the weekend when he doesn't have to work. He'll go back to that after Labor Day. Sounds like fun, but I'm not sure what help a drummer/security guard and computer programmer will be, but we'll do what we can.

Say hello to Theresa for me.

Love, annap

Hey, Bert,

Any ideas on dates yet? Those social calendars do fill up! I'd still recommend scheduling more than one date, if you can. Hope to see you soon.
