Meg may only have three legs but she is a great character! I did put this link on the favourite things thread, but I thought she deserved one of her own see her here

Looks like a border collie to me - what do you expect! They're the best!

We had a border collie when the kids were little. In the absence of sheep, she kept them where we wanted them. Then she had a daughter to a bearded collie - turned into a sort of affectionate floor mop, but an excellent mouser, who disposed of the evidence completely in one bite.

Our current Border x black retriever is more of a retriever than a rounder up - she got a mouthful of baby jackdaw, brought it to us and spat it out alive and intact.
She also had a phase of retrieving all the hedgehogs in the garden for us - but eventually the penny dropped, and she stopped bleeding.

Our border collie, Fly, is usually on duty at the stables. If the horses are in and waiting for their feeds sometimes one will bang their door with their hoof.

Fly runs to their door sits and barks just once, then another horse further up the row will bang its door, so off she goes to that one - sits and barks just once, then another .......... get the picture.
We're not sure if they are all playing the same game, or the horses are taking the p**s !

You may think well she's not that smart, but the thing is we've never taught her to do this. She's just worked it out for herself, that they shouldn't bank their doors !

That IS a handsome Dane, and although it is hard to tell without a shot showing him properly stood, he looks to be of good conformation, too. There seems to be something a bit funny about his pastens and there is no way to assess the turn of stifle. A Blue is usually smaller than a 'quin so his coloration makes his size all the more remarkable.

That Dane is gorgeous and daunting!

Sooz, may I ask where you found that chess board? I have a couple of granddogs I think would love it. My McNab BC seems to be "above" playing games, but ya never know..at 14 maybe he could learn.:-) Good and smart girl you've got there!

Meg is gorgeous - love the chessboard! Wish they'd invent one of those for humans, it might improve my game...

adorable

I sent link to chess board to a friend of mine who now has her son's Mastiff. He is quite lonely since the family Springer passed away.

Border Collie intelligence is almost scary. They are always a bit smarter than you expect. The way they train humans is phenomenal.

MY clever dog (Faulkner) NEVER gets up on furniture uninvited, even if we are out of the room!!!

Unless there is fresh cat barf to clean up on the topline of the LR sofa back, in which case I do not mind finding a few black (therefore Dog) hairs on the washable throw that keeps the nice (expensive, gift) sofa from getting too much hard-to-vac cat fluff.

I was feeding the dogs a few weeks ago and as usual we were on the back patio. I fill the bowls as they wait, and move them to opposite sides of the porch out of habit. Each dog sits and waits for the command to eat. The pit bull somehow wasn't sure I'd given her permission to eat, and because after I pointed at each bowl I stepped away to look out the gate, I didn't notice she wasn't eating while the catahoula was. I heard a wimper and looked around to see this dog quivering but still patiently waiting for permission to eat. Such a good girl, resisting that temptation as she awaited my command. She would be a wiz at this puzzle.

OTOH Sadie is sweet but not overly smart-- she'd EAT the puzzle!

No, she wouldn't either-- she'd carry it to me in piece to throw for her.

This thread is making me pretty sad in a way. We lost our working sheepdog Lily after 15 years of being a member of the family at the beginning of December. She died in my arms and we miss her so much, and my wife does especially. I feel she's still here and reading these stories of dogs is a bittersweet experience as it brings back so may happy memories of our Lil.

Sigh.
