Folk on Sesame Street

I notice from Google that Sesame Street is celebrating its 40th birthday. Does anyone have any recollection of any folk song on the programme?

Does this count?
Probably not. But worth a watch, anyway. Or three. LOL

There was a time when children's telly relied on folkies for their presenters.

Notably:-
Dave and Tony Arthur
Ralph McTell
Derek Brimstone ?

Loads of faces in my head but senior moment forbids recall!!

Derek Brimstone? I don't remember that (maybe I'm too young?). What did he present?

How about this Sesame Street Zydeco clip?

And there was plenty more like that.

Twickfolk, that was a very cool clip -- Buffy St. Marie singing Cripple Creek, with mouth bow!

Molly Scott was on the first show. Melvina Reynolds was a regular, as was Buffy St. Marie. Michael Cooney was on at least one of the shows in the first season, at least he tells a story about them wanting him to modify the lyrics of T for Texas". Apparently the line "who made a wreck of me" wasn't quite what they had in mind.

Dave Mallett's The Garden Song was featured once.It was very funny to see hear vegetables singing in harmony.

Inch by inch row by row
Gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe
And a piece of fertile ground...

Track listing:

Michael Row The Boat Ashore / This Land Is Your Land / Skip To My Lou / She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain / Patty Cake Gorilla / Riding In My Car / Garbage / Old Lady Who Swallowed The Fly / The Ballad Of Martin Luther King / Guantanamera / Sweet Rosyanne

And I hope to hear this at the Celtic Connections club in January:

The Frogs in the Glen

And while I'm here, Telly does Joni Mitchell/Judy Collins

The actual Judy Collins on Sesame Street

Oops, that was from me. I'm not safe to operate machinery in the morning.

I'll never get any work done now.

This is amazing (with Muppet versions of Jim Henson, Frank Oz and Jerry Nelson):

I remember Pete Seeger singing Buffalo Gals or "Sesame Street Gals" on the show, and I didn't watch the show much. It must have been the 1st season or 2, 39 or 40 years ago.

I think there were a few folk and country acts on The Muppet Show, produced by ATV in the uk in the late 1970s using Jim Henson's puppets. Although the show was made in the uk most of the guest stars would be known in the usa as well, so the programme could be sold to tv companies there.

They used to have a great "Keep on the Sunny Side" with a Muppet Band

I once recorded the sound track for a Sesame street cartoon. It was a version of Old MacDonald Had A Farm called Young MacDonald Went To Town.
The session was with Jack Baker from the Fretted Instruments School in New York playing banjo and me singing and playing guitar.

I also remember Holly Near on an episode, don't remember what she sang.

I'd love to see the Molly Scott video clip if it exists.

I have many mo0re vague memories of the Muppets than I do of Sesame Street, mainly because when I watched it in its early years I was too young to appreciate folk music.

Holly Near sang "Water Come Down" on Sesame Street with sign language accompaniment. I would love to see it again

Normally with these anniversaries they do some kind of celebration programme plundering the archives. One on Sesame Street could be pretty good fun.
