Charlie's on Union Quay, Monday nights, where Hank Wedel and Ray Barron play, is a must.

When I was last there, in early March of this year, it was a great place. Can't speak for it now, of course.

The Corner House on Coburg Street used to be great, I'm biassed 'cos I married a Cork girl 44 years back.

Somewhat facetious comment - sorry!:

I have never been there.

But as this is Mudcat, can any of us avoid the train of thought of how pretty and gay we were when we entered it on horseback and met with our downfall on the 14th of May!?

A friend and I went for a weekend a few years back, largely because the now-defunct Air Wales was a) flying from Swansea Airfield (n.b. 'field' not 'port'), b) advertising for stewardesses who "must be under 5'3" which got my curiosity going and c) flying to Cork, which I'd never visited.

I had a really, really, really good time.

Went to the English market, and the cathedral, and a pub on t'other side of the river (Sin-e or something?) which had good music. We also met a lovely old gentleman there who knew a lot about Wales and tons about local history. We had some very good meals. We took a bus to Kinsale, and we also went down on the train to Cobh which was tremendously interesting. The day we flew in, the ship "The World" was in port which I thought was tempting fate rather - given Cobh's connection with other famous shipwrecks.

Yep. Full marks to Cork. Loved it.

I hear on the grapevine that the Monday night sessions in what used to be The Lobby (now renamed An Crubeen) on the corner of Union Quay have been reinstated. Anyone shed further light?

Yes, can't wait for the Swansea Cork ferry to start again this year. I was getting really cheesed off with the extra 400 mls round trip driving that Pembroke Rosslare reuired.

Super city is Cork, abundance of small shops, nice places to have a pint with a meal, and The English Market is fascinating, particularly the fish stall.

The only place I've seen someone busking on an upright piano.

Am I to deduce from the threat title that Cork City does not actually exist?

no it exists,
but its something to fantasise about, when you are in the Slough of despondency,or when you are in Slough.

Ah.... (smile)

Strangely enough, my Dad went to school in Slough, of all places, during the early years of the 2nd World War.

I always thought it was a simply dreadful thing to name a place.

A friend of mine, resident in that county some years ago, set me the limerick challenge

There once was a lad from west Cork,
Who always split buns with a fork.

I will give this company a chance before revealing my solution.

He would aim with precision
As he made each incision
Much the same as an Elf splits an Orc.

His wife said, "Can't you
Find better things to do?"
So now they're expecting the stork

Said he, "Damn that rhyme!
      I'd make much better time
If I came from Kilmallock or Limerick."

There once was a lad from west Cork,
Who always split buns with a fork.
He'd yell out "More whisky!"
And when feeling quite frisky
He'd bugger a side of roast pork.
