From: GUEST,AndyC From what I've heard of Dylan's new Christmas album he's chosen a selection of fairly schmaltzy songs - nothing very challenging or unusual. So my question is - which songs do you think should have been recorded instead to create a much more interesting Christmas album? There must be lots of interesting Christmas songs in the folk, country and blues traditions that would have deserved a place on an album like this. Here are a few ideas from me to begin with... - 'First Christmas Away From Home' by Stan Rogers - 'Winter Song' by Lindisfarne - 'Christmas Eve Can Kill You' written by Dennis Linde, best known version is by Everly Brothers. (These songs can all be heard on You Tube). |

How about Loudon Wainwright's Suddenly It's Christmas? SUDDENLY IT'S CHRISTMAS Loudon Wainwright III Suddenly it's Christmas, Right after Hallowe'en. Forget about Thanksgiving; It's just a buffet in between. There's lights and tinsel in the windows; They're stocking up the shelves; Santa's slaving at the North Pole In his sweatshop full of elves. There's got to be a build-up To the day that Christ was born: The halls are decked with pumpkins And the ears of Indian corn. Dragging through the falling leaves In a one-horse open sleigh, Suddenly it's Christmas, Seven weeks before the day. Suddenly it's Christmas, The longest holiday. When they say "Season's Greetings" They mean just what they say: It's a season, it's a marathon, Retail eternity. It's not over till it's over And you throw away the tree. Outside it's positively balmy, In the air nary a nip; Suddenly it's Christmas, Unbuttoned and unzipped. Yes, they're working overtime, Santa's little runts; Christmas comes but once a year And goes on for two months. Christmas carols in December And November, too; It's no wonder we're depressed When the whole thing is through. Finally it's January; Let's sing "Auld Lang Syne"; But here comes another heartache, Shaped like a Valentine. Suddenly it's Christmas, The longest holiday. The season is upon us; A pox, it won't go away. It's a season, it's a marathon, Retail eternity. It's not over till it's over And you throw away the tree. No, it's not over till it's over And you throw away the tree; It's still not over till it's over And you throw away the tree. |

Christmas With The Devil The elves are dressed in leather And the angels are in chains (Christmas with the Devil) The sugar plums are rancid And the stockings are in flames (Christmas with the Devil) There's a demon in my belly And a gremlin in my brain There's someone up the chimney hole And Satan is his name The rats ate all the presents And the reindeer ran away (Christmas with the Devil) There'll be no Father Christmas 'Cause it's Evils holiday (Christmas with the Devil) No bells in Hell No snow below- Silent Night, Violent Night So come all ye unfaithful Don't be left out in the cold You don't need no invitation, no... Your ticket is your soul ***** Man, just think about it! Dylan's growly sinister old voice would give this classic headbanger song a spooky sound that would just send chills up your spine. And imagine the video!!! |
