It's yet another attempt to be trendy. Like the oft repeated offer to share a thread with Twitter, which has a limit of 140 characters per post.
I suppose someone can't count

is this some sort of packaged fodder for trolls?

It at least only lists music threads, last I looked.

I like it. RSS is a very convenient way to look at lists of news-like information, which is what Mudcat threads are. But I'm not sure of it can handle quite as many current thread as the standard interface.

I can see myself using this a lot. Well done.

My posts, copied from the "share this thread" thread above.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I see that there is now a button at the top for a link to RSS feeds for Mudcat. This is quite different than "social networking", but I doubt that many will be interested in it....and perhaps many have no idea WHAT it is...

here is a general outline

I use RSS in standalone programs called "news aggregators" which allow one to subscribe to a wide range of 'feeds' on various topics. One can get instant updates on topics of interest without seeing 'everything' a site..(often a newspaper or magazine)..might have available. here is just one of many such 'readers'. And here is another. These can be VERY useful for those who wish to follow specialized topics such as tech stuff, political news...etc.

I suppose that this would allow you to get updates on Mudcat threads of interest thru your email, or by opening it in some RSS aggregator...(these are built into some newer browsers, though I personally prefer dedicated, stand-alone programs for specialized tasks.)

I will possibly try out the Mudcat feed(s) and see exactly what it does....if I learn anything of interest, I will report back.

-------------------------------------

Well...that didn't take long! Here is a screen capture of part of the MudcatRSS feed as seen in the RSSBandit program

Clicking on the orange lettering gives me the thread on 'identifying a banjo', so this is just one more way to read Mudcat..plus, it can be set to update at various intervals and play an alert...etc.

Play with it if you wish...(it's relatively easy once you do it twice)

Think of it as having your personal choices from dozens of newspapers & websites opened when, and in any configuration you choose in an easy-to-read way.

All of that can be obtained from 'Posts since last visit' in the drop down menu.

It can indeed, Helen...but in a different format/sorting. A news aggregator lists threads as they appear in Mudcat.

As I say...it is just a different way to view. It can be combined with other topics of interest and scanned without opening one's browser.
I don't really expect many to use it.

I get all my news from the Mudcat. It is usually more up to date internationally, often with eyewitnesses, than the news channels.
Why would I want to go somewhere else BEFORE I've read it all on Mudcat?
Quack!

With further thought, the RSS feed is what I'd like to see as a "click hre to share" thingie. I use RSS on other sites; it could be a great way to showcase the diversity of Mudcat discussion, the MUSIC focus of the site, and (because of the creativity of titling variations) a sense of the real personality of the place.

It's like a very-portable brochure, and if the BS section was something people had to earn their way into (Members-only, probationary periods, etc.), the RSS feed would be a very strong draw to the upside of the Cat.

so... I see one can actually post from an RSS feed. It is just a display of the threads in a different type of 'browser'.

(still in RSSBandit)

and...I can reset my cookie and get all my membership perks here too...just needed to check. I haven't checked to see if it retains my cookie when I close it...

(reloading RSSBandit next morning....)

So, as I expected, my cookie is still working here. It all works just like a browser, with slightly different 'feel' and other features.

Up in the music section there's been a lively debate about this for the last few days, including an explanation by Max of what this is all about - "Share this thread"?
