Geoff Muldaur & Texas Sheiks

For Mudcatters in the Austin, TX and San Francisco Bay areas:
Geoff Muldaur & the Texas Sheiks with special guest Sheik Jim Kweskin are going to play 2 live shows in Dec. The Texas Sheiks are: Cindy Cashdollar (Dobro, lap steel); Johnny Nicholas (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano, kick drum); Suzy Thompson (fiddle); Bruce Hughes (vocals, acoustic bass).

Sun. Dec. 6 at the Saxon Pub, in Austin, TX
Sat. Dec. 12 at the Freight & Salvage, in Berkeley, CA

This is the amazing band that Geoff Muldaur put together in order to distract Austin guitar hero Stephen Bruton from his battle with cancer (unfortunately he lost that battle, and died last May) and the Austin-based musicians who came to join Stephen in this project were Cindy Cashdollar, Johnny Nicholas and Bruce Hughes, plus Jim Kweskin and yours truly. The chemistry between all the musicians was truly magical; it was the most fun I've ever had making a record, the easiest, and the most musically satisfying. The CD was finally released in September on a German label (Tradition & Moderne) and has gotten great reviews, and is getting airplay all over the U.S.

I've put up an unofficial Geoff Muldaur & Texas Sheiks website: http://www.ericandsuzy.com/sheiks.htm

Loved what I heard when I followed the link you provided to Myspace. Been a fan of both G. Muldaur and Jim Kweskin for a long time.

And also loved your's and Eric's music that I got to listen to on CD Baby.

Thanks! Wish you guys were lining up some gigs in the Old North State.

It's an amazing record. Anyone who loves blues and jugband music should check it out. Austin and Berkeley are in for a treat.

Suzi -- You just sold one ticket to the Austin show, to me. I'll bring whomever I can.

For Los Angelenos, although we don't get a full Texas Sheiks show, Geoff Muldaur and Jim Kweskin are doing a show together at the Shannon Center for the Performing Arts in Whittier on November 21.

There is a nice write-up of this CD in the Dec/Jan issue of Blues Revue magazine. I love Geoff's quote referring to Suzy T and Cindy Cashdollar as The Everly Sisters.

Also, in the same issue, I see that The Texas Shieks contributed a cut on Things ABout Comin' My Way: A Tribute to the Mississippi Shieks.

Can't wait to pick up both of these records.

Suzy T.,
Y'all were reviewed on NPR's Fresh Air today by Ken Tucker. He loved the record, played excerpts. It's too fresh to be on their Web site so I can't link to it, but it should be there tomorrow.

I didn't get to hear the thing on Fresh Air, but I did read it on their web site. I think the easiest way to buy the CD is on Amazon. Any folks in the San Francisco area, I hope you'll be able to come to our show at the Freight on Sat. Dec. 12. For those near Austin Texas, we will be at the Saxon Pub on Sun. Dec. 6th. So far these are our only gigs but I'm hoping with all the attention the CD has been getting, perhaps there will be more!   Geoff Muldaur, Jim Kweskin, Cindy Cashdollar, Johnny Nicholas - how can you go wrong?? I am so honored to be playing with these musicians.

I just wanted to shout out to Suzy T and the rest of the Texas Sheiks. I attended this show at a packed, packed, packed Saxon Pub on Sunday night. Suzy, I went in intending to say hello but you looked so busy and the place was so crowded that I decided to let you stay in your moment. This was great fun and I encourage all to check out the album. The NPR piece -- with several album excerpts -- can be heard here. I hope some more gigs become possible. If not, I understand that Geoff Muldaur and Jim Kweskin have done at least a few duo gigs, which are undoubtedly worthwhile as well.

I didn't get to hear the whole interview, But Terry Gross interviewed GM for Fresh Air and it was broadcast last night.

The last time I saw Geoff was solo at Hugh's Room in Toronto. It would be great if he brought this group to Canada sometime.

They just re-played the Fresh Air interview as one of the "most memorable" of 2009. Really neat, esp. talking about looking for a bridge to find the grave of Blind Lemon Jefferson. You can hear the whole thing HERE.

I picked up a couple of copies of this Texas Sheik CD this year, and gave one for our gift exchange at work. The young man who received it had never heard of Muldaur (no one at the table had--their loss) but I hope he fell in love with it and it broadens his horizons.
