Tech: Help! Graphic Drivers. Where are they?

I have downloaded a new game for my son and it tells me to update the graphic drivers.

I have tried all I know to find the name/type of driver on my pc but now I,m stumped.

I am running WinXP Pro, please please, how the hell do I find them, I,m sure it must be simple enough, but obviously not simple to me.

I have downloaded a new game for my son and it tells me to update the graphics driver and lists several named sites for this purpose.

I have tried to find the name of my current driver that is being used but it is proving very elusive. Where the hell do I find out if it is Radeon Nvidia or DivX whatever?

Someone please help, thanks.

The game is 18 Wheels of Steel American Extreme Truckers, we already have a sister game American Long Haul which works fine.

The pc is a Dell

start,Settings, control panel, system, hardware, device manager, display adapters.

That should list what type you have.

The the sites may well have an automated feature to identify the card.

Hi, WHB-

this page should help you quite a bit.

Note the "Extreme Trucker" system requirements, though:

  • Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7
  • 2.2 GHz CPU
  • 1 GB RAM (2+ recommended on Vista)
  • 1 GB HD Space
  • 256 MB graphics accelerator (GeForce FX or better class, ATI 9600 class)
If you don't have that on your machine, you're screwed. I barely have that on the Windows 7 computer I bought two weeks ago.

The requirements for "Long Haul" are a lot less:
  • Windows® XP/Vista
  • Pentium® 4 1.4 GHz or 100% compatible
  • 256 MB RAM
  • 540 MB Hard Drive Space
  • 64 MB AGP DirectX® 9 and T&L compatible video accelerator card
  • DirectX 9.0c or later (included)
  • DirectX compatible sound card
  • 8X CD-ROM drive
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
MMario's succinct instructions are correct, but we can talk you through it in more detail if you need help. I really enjoy the challenge of getting games to work on a computer, but then I play them for five minutes and get bored. I got stuck on one, though - "Bejeweled 2." I play that one over and over. I think it's because I can listen to music and do other things while I'm playing...
Good luck.

Come to think of it, I'm supposed to be working on installing an experimental version of the Digital Tradition on my computer. So far, I'm stumped. But hey, I haven't given up yet. But maybe I'll play just one game of "Bejeweled" before I get into it.

Thanks Mario and Joe, I did the search and found out which one it is, but I think the problem is the requirements of Extreme as Joe said, it needs much more than Long Haul and my pc isn't quite there.

Ah well, I'll just have to have a look at this Bejeweled thing.

Also it makes a difference if the pc is a desktop or a laptop...as the drivers for a laptop are geared specifically toward that model of a laptop...if there are no updates for it from the manufacturer, then typically you cannot update the drivers....there are ways to get around it, but that is not supported...

Additionally, while games may work on a notebook, they are not supported as gaming computers...

What a curious transformation

As Mudcat - becomes All Things - to ALL PEOPLE

The American Folk/Blues/Technique threads...have virtualy vanished in the UK engulfcation....but now TECH - above the line...is becoming folk.

There were once "better postitions" on the web to post a "drivers request"...but...it is "nature" to help out the needy...may Darwin please prove false.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

"There is always one", how true, there are 3 Tech requests out of 111 threads on the first page,

What is the problem?

I have asked about three Tech questions in the last six years and have been very grateful for the help that has been forthcoming, long may it continue.

Don't be fooled by Gargoyle.

He tries to come across as a grumpy old git with a sick headache, but in reality he's just a ...... grumpy old git with a sick headache.
