13 Nov 09 - 09:01 PM (#2765695) Subject: Sue's report on Sept trip to Ireland! From: Suegorgeous Just to say - belated thanks to all who responded to my plea for info earlier in the autumn. I had a fantastic trip to Connemara, Clare, Kerry and Cork. Some highlights: Tulla Festival - the 5-hour song session in the pub with Robbie McMahon and Nora - wonderful! plus discovering Martin Hayes' fiddle playing. Nell Galvin festival - the excitement of finding I was top of the beginners' tin whistle class (though only through virtue of unexpectedly knowing the fingering, through recorder playing as a child!) Connemara - driving over to Omey Island at low tide and exploring the ruined chapel. Swimming on a hot day on a deserted beach near Ballyconneely, with only some curious cows on the opposite beach for company. Mizen Head peninsula in Cork, particularly my magical stay in Schull. Meeting Jim Carroll (for all of 3 seconds!) at Frank Harte Festival. Disappointments: barely none, but outside the festivals, found even music sessions (let alone song sessions) hard to track down in small places. Turned up at a couple advertised locally, to find zilch happening. Probably summer is better for that. Many thanks to all! hope to get to some places I missed next time round. Sue |

I have now officially turned into a recluse and don't seem to be able to make myself play out. In fairness, I used to go out to Moyasta with Kitty Hayes and try get a few tunes across over the noise of the punters, a bit of a struggle always. Peadar Crotty would sit beside us on the stage shouting things into the microphone like 'shut up you feckers and listen, this is lovely music'. Ofcourse they never did. With Kitty gone and Peadar dying just days before this year's festival I felt there were just too many empty seats on the stage that I didn't want to face. |

From: Suegorgeous Jim - to be honest, I found the workshop so-so... it was quite short, and more of a song than a voice workshop, with songsheets handed out and singing from these mostly. although we did all sing one verse each of a song we knew. I think everyone else was local (and Irish!), they made me very welcome. Sorry I couldn't stay on the next day for more sessions, but had to book ferry on that day for various complicated reasons... Guess I was just unlucky with tracking down song sessions while travelling - I did ask around a lot locally... maybe they're a secret kept from "visitors"!? Fergie - was it you I spoke to on the phone? I did ask the chap hosting who you were, and he pointed you out, but you were at that time busy attending to the woman who'd hurt her head... All the "zero-seconds"...no way for me to know who you were... I arrived late and disoriented at that first session (had a horrible time finding my way into Dublin from the motorway). I was a bit too shy and overcome to actually sing in that huge room full of strangers, sorry! Peter - yes, I know what you mean, the chatter overpowered everything at times... enjoyed the evening music and sessions (though not enough songs for me!) - but the best bit, as I said, was doing the tin whistle class, alongside several small children and a couple of adults (again, think I was the only non-local!). I have a few nice pics of the event. Anyone know of any singers' festivals/weekends coming up in next few months, please let me know, as flights can be cheap... Sue |

One exception, perhaps, is with Phil Callery (once of The Voice Squad). I attended a session (one of three IIRC) he ran at the Feakle festival in August. Phil combined exercises, examples, advice and song lore in what I thought was a real tour-de-force. Regards |

It's a few years since I've been there - despite the attraction of a possible visit to the North Slob Wildlife reserve. Until recently, Wexford was the only county in Ireland where a birdwatcher was likely to bump into another (birdwatcher!). Now they're falling over each other... Regards |
