Appreciate any contributions! Credited to Paul Clayton and recorded by Bill Clifton on album "Code of the Mountains" also on "Round the world to poor valley" This is what I can remember of the first verse and chorus: A lonely little cabin on the hill That's what a stranger called our home one day Somehow it never seemed like that to us But perhaps that's cos we were brought up that way In that lonely little cabin on the hill How soon the time would quickly slip away And we all joined in the singing when we heard that banjo ringing And I'd give the world to be back there today Tried to access through Rhapsody but being in New Zealand was not allowed to hear the audio! |

And although the visitors were mighty few We never turned the stranger from the door. Chorus Not sure whether there is a third verse - perhaps not. I frst heard this when I picked up an LP fpr £6 - pre-decimalisation - on York station when I was a teenager. It was Hank Williams Junior and a band - can't remember their name, and every song was a gem. Sadly the LP went missing when I was away from home one time. I'd love to know the title of that LP, although I don't think it has survived to CD. Some of the other tracks were The Dream of the Miner's Child, Engine 23, Squiirel is a Pretty Thing, Lonesome for You, Jim Hatfield's Son, and other wonderful songs, beautifully performed. |

Well, every song is a gem (or close to it) but Bill Clifton is a real person and not Hank, Jr. Before Bill Clifton moved to England in 1963, his record company had him do 33 songs, enough to make three albums while he was away. I believe "Code of the Mountains" was one of the LPs and came out on Starday. He was backed by all four members of The Contry Gentlemen plus twin fiddles by brothers named Justice on some songs. Mike Seeger, who worked with Bill Clifton in the late '50s adds some great guitar on a few tracks, such as "Louis Collins". All 33 songs were put on a Bear Family double LP set, probably in the 1980s. No CD except the 8 CD Box Set which requires a second mortgage to buy. |
