BS: WAVE for Climate Change (London)

On Saturday 5th December 2009 The Stop Climate Chaos Coalition is organising a mass demo to surround Parliament with a Blue Wave of people.
For those of a spiritual bent there is an ecumenical service at Westminster Central Hall at 11 am. The rally will assemble in Grosvenor Square at 12 noon( no doubt to be photographed by the CIA in the US Embassy!), leaving for Parliament at 1.00. By 3pm we hope to have encircled Parliament if enough people turn up. Wear something blue.
I'll be there with about a dozen neighbours. Will you?

Needs a refresh.........

Sounds like a good plan Skiff and I wish you well. Maybe all those folks busily discussing traditions might see the importance of the future as well.

World on track for 6 degrees of extra heat
Shanta Barley, reporter

The world is on track to warm by a whopping 6 °C by the end of this century, unless steps are taken immediately to cut greenhouse gas emissions, according to research published yesterday.

The Global Carbon Project, a group of 31 scientists from 7 countries led by Corinne Le Quéré at the University of East Anglia and the British Antarctic Survey, used satellite and national inventory data to track emissions of carbon dioxide. They also used models to estimate carbon sinks - such as oceans and forests - that absorb the greenhouse gas (Nature Geoscience, DOI: 10.1038/ngeo689).
It found that the ability of natural carbon sinks to soak up the CO2 humans pump into the atmosphere is declining. The study estimates that in the past 50 years, the fraction of CO2 emissions that remains in the atmosphere each year may have increased from roughly 40 per cent to 45 per cent.

As a result, the portion of emitted CO2 that ends up staying in the atmosphere increased on average by around 0.3 per cent per year between 1959 and 2008.

CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels have increased at an average annual rate of 3.4 per cent between 2000 and 2008, compared with just 1 per cent per year in the 1990s, the study says, mainly as a result of the boom in China's economy.

Between 2000 and 2008, global emissions rose by 29 per cent.

If steps are not taken at the climate change discussions in Copenhagen this December to rein in runaway emissions, the world is heading for a 6C rise, says Le Quéré.

"If the agreement is too weak, or the commitments not respected, it is not 2.5 °C or 3 °C we will get: it's 5 °C or 6 °C - that is the path we're on," Le Quéré told BBC News.

I think the human population may be decimated by starvation due to bee colony collapse before the global warming does us in.

In some parts of the world, people are pollinating crops. Scary.

Who ever is left, will be living on bread or porridge and bananas.

Just got home. About 3,500 filled the Westminster Central Hall for the ecumenical service addreseed by Ropwan Williams, and the ArchBp of Westminster as well as reps from Bangladesh and Burkina Fasso. Then out to join the march (20,000 to 40,000 depending on who is counting!) which finally surrounded Parliament from Westminster Bridge to Lambeth Bridge and both sides of the Thames. Our group of 12(the one from my wife's church who kindly allowed this Dissenter to join them!) were behind Southampton University and in front of Cambridge University so lots of singing & chanting to join in with. Plenty pf photofodder for bemused tourists! The rain held off till near the end.
Will it make any difference? Who knows. At least it go on the news!

Bob Dylan song adopted by Copenhagen climate summit

By Barbara Plett
BBC UN correspondent, New York

Bob Dylan has star billing at the climate change summit in Copenhagen… or at least, his music does.

The United Nations has adopted one of his songs, A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall, as its unofficial anthem for the talks.

The whole climate change thing is a scam.
Many of us have said it all along and now the scientists have been caught cooking the books.

You should tell the robins who now stay year-round in Pennsylvania that they are perpetutating a scam.

Perhaps the corals that have shown record bleaching in Hawaii and Florida are also in on the scam?

And those spruce bark beetles that are reaching ever higher altitudes and latitudes have somehow been paid-off the go along with the conspiracy.

And those butterflies. One quarter of North American species have shifted their ranges northward over the last 25 years (while abandoning the southern extents of their ranges). I am glad that the email the CRC sent to them encouraging them to do that has not yet been discovered.
