Anyone know of any recordings, or anyone know the tune, to the song The Forsaken Soldier (An Saighdiuir Trei in Gaelic)?

Paddy Tunney gives the (fantastic) lyrics in his Stone Fiddle book (thanks to whoever it was for the tip!). But doesn't give the tune.

Nice that you found the 'Stone Fiddle' book, but you've another treat in store with his "Where Songs Do Thunder" where he memorably describes Geordie Hanna as "not moulded in tradition; he was quarried out of it."

Anyway there was another thread on this song just a few days ago Lyr Req: Is fada mo chosa gan bhróga, although the translation there differs from the one by Paddy Tunney in 'Stone Fiddle'.

There is a performance of the song on YouTube by Skara Brae from a 2004 TG4 programme, and another by more or less the same people Tríona, Mairéad and Mícheál O Domhnaill with a full set of lyrics in both languages.

See also another thread on Mudcat: Lyr Req: An Saighdiúr Treigthe/ Deserted Soldier.

There are a few tunes associated with this song
another version was sung by the late Eithne Ní Uallacháin who performed with her husband Gerry O'Connor as
"Lá Lugh"

Thanks!

I've no idea how everyone else seems to strike it lucky with searching for song titles on here. Sod's law – I always seem to pick the alternate spelling that isn't listed here...
