And yet in the past week or two, I have been deluged with mail from people wanting to offer me lucrative jobs where all I'd have to do is work for 2 or 3 hours a day and/or bank cheques or forward money to others. Sounds familiar? Here's a sample of the type of thing. If it's genuine, I apologise to the firm concerned, but how did you get my email address? Not from Craigslist, fer sure! No, I firmly believe that this offer and the dozens of others I have received and put straight into the spam folder are phishing expeditions by our old friends the Nigerian scammers. I'm sure the next thing you'd get if you replied is a request to forward all your personal details and your bank account number. Then, goodbye cash.... 'Catters, be warned! " Hello, My Name is Kindel, I am the C.E.O OF KINDEL TEXTILES My company produces various clothing materials, batiks, assorted fabrics and traditional costumes. We have clients we supply weekly in the states and my clients make payments for our supplies every week in form of Travellers Check or Cashiers check which are not readily cashable outside the US or Canada and we need someone in the States/Canada to work as our representative and assist us in processing the payments from our clients and I will pay him/her a weekly wage, by percentage. All you need to do is receive this payment from our clients in the States or Canada and get it cashed in your bank or a cashing center then deduct your 20% and forward the balance to the company down here via moneygram or western union money transfer. if only you are willing to work from home part-time and get paid weekly by 20% . Forward the following information..... {1} Full Name {2} Full contact address {3} Phone number/fax This Your information will be forwarded to our numerous clients in the states so as to issue out payment........ Recently, I had an e-Mail seemingly from my bank (ANZ) wanting some correspondence. The page was identical to ANZ's except for the address. I had the sense to check. I contacted ANZ, who put me on to the appropriate government investigator. Heard no more. There is an article in the wife's Aussie 'That's Life' magazine where a hacker took over a girls Facebook account and sent desperate messages to all 400 of her 'friends.' "I've been mugged and injured in London, they got my money and passport, I'm in hospital...etc" Locked her out of her own page, and locked her out when she came in on a chums page, too. They got away with at least $1000 from a good guy. |

When someone approaches you with an address from the list, especially of something unsolicited, be suspicious. My mother, who is new to computers [at 87] got offered one of these Spanish Prisoner scams which would send her all sorts of money if she would senda processing fee of only $850. Her response was to tell them to take it out of the Million. If someone offers you a tremendous deal, offer to handle the money through a venue such as PayPal, which does not give away any personal info. If you believe in something for nothing, you will have the privilege of getting nothing for something and probably having your identity stolen into the bargain. If you are buying from any of the public bulletin boards, remember the old motto: KIB--Kash is best as almost anything else can be counterfeited or used to steal your personal info. |
