22 Nov 09 - 09:48 PM (#2771490) Subject: Tech: Firefox auto spellchecker quit & it's on From: katlaughing Any idea how to make Firefox automatic spellchecker work when it is ticked ON and isn't working? I had to dump all add-ons the other day for some other problem, then added it back in. It is in the ON position but won't show no matter what I do. And, while I am at it, have any of you downloaded the new AVG version 9? It says it won't be available after Dec. 1st, so I've tried several times. Each time it says it is trying to establish an internet connection and then claims it cannot. I am ON the internet when it tells me it cannot connect AND the one time it looked as though it loaded all of the files, the green bar was almost all the way to the right...it failed, again, so I have given up. Thanks for any help on either. |

I got it the other day, even though it was slow. And when you say "dump" add-ons, I have visions of something more than uninstall. Could it be a new version of something? My add-ons have been updating at a prodigious rate these days. |

Must've accidentally dumped the one I had in there. Plus, for some reason it seems the google toolbar made it happier. I don't esp. like it and don't use it, but I love spellchecker, so...I may disable the toolbar and see if the speller still works. Now, on to AVG! |

Great, opened the saved to file .exe, started the install process which is where it then tells me "AVG Setup is checking your internet connection, please wait." This is in a box which came up when I clicked on Install and is titled, "AVG Download Manager." In the time it took me to type this and correct typos, it is still running a "Connectivity Check!" |

23 Nov 09 - 01:05 PM (#2771909) Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox auto spellchecker quit & AVG query From: katlaughing Oh! I think I figured it out. It finally connected, I pushed Next, I chose the Free Version, hit Finish and it disappeared. Next, I clicked on my AVG icon which says I am all up to date with the latest update listed for today and version 8.5.425 which I guess it would show instead of the new 9? I am going to restart my computer to see if that shows the 9. |

At first they sorta' pissed me off with all that but over the years I've loved the product so much I guess now I just get a laugh out of it. But damn if you don't have to be careful and read everydamn thing right til the end,,,,,,,then if you notice the last command or two have very clear instructions like they're saying, "Okay Buddy......You got thru the maze so here's your prize!" Glad you made it katmyluv..... Spaw |

23 Nov 09 - 01:36 PM (#2771939) Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox auto spellchecker quit & AVG query From: Bill D It IS the case that AVG is working hard recently to herd you toward their paid version. You have to pay attention. If they get TOO pushy or slow down my machine 'monitoring' everything, I know a couple others I can try. |

23 Nov 09 - 05:42 PM (#2772123) Subject: RE: Tech: Firefox auto spellchecker quit & AVG query From: Stilly River Sage I'm with you on that, Spaw. I know to expect that maze, and to have to look at several new screens before the free version (not the 30-day trail) is finally offered from AVG. I've been getting some odd results from my Firefox when I use the Google toolbar spelling check. It can't seem to land directly on one word, it bridges the underline between a couple of words. Sometimes one of them is misspelled, but not usually. I find if I use Chrome that it is fairly polite when it does spell check as I type. In the past I would have eliminated the program's ability to check as I type, but it means I can add the word to my dictionary or simply have a correct document and not use the toolbar spell check (and despite being Chrome, there is no Google toolbar for Chrome. Kind of funny, that.) SRS |

I've learned to watch the fine print, too! |
