Paper Chase: Lobby Lud in London

While researching Lobby Lud at the British Library, I found some sheet music for a 1927 song detailing his adventures. It was scored for ukulele, so I sent a copy to George Hinchliffe from The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, and he very kindly recorded a home demo for me.

George has given me permission to post the song on-line as a free download, and you'll find it at the link above. All this and an essay about Lobby's forgotten adventures in Britain's capital too!

Wonderful stuff Paul, a great article and many thanks for getting that song into the public domain.

A great memory jolt for me: I grew up hearing this story from my Grandma and other oldies in my seaside dwelling family when in the 50's the Daily Mirror ran the Chalky White campaigns: the 'and I claim my five pounds' was much banded about in my youth.

Herga's Mike Sparks has written a song about the English seaside experience, which Moses (as in Moses and the Ref) also sings, with a chorus that ends "Punch and Judy on the front, and there's always Lobby Lud to hunt".

You've piqued my curiosity, Kitty. What's the name of that song, and where can I hear it?

And Andrew King of Stömp with You Are Lobby Lud.

Paul - it's Mike Sparks' Holiday Song. I don't think Mike has recorded it, but it's on the CD of Moses and the Ref Live at Willenhall on the recordings page of their website. "Grandma's drinking bottles of stout, with her stockings down and her dentures out..."

How very odd. Stömp came out properly in the preview. Sodding html must have screwed it up.

So that's
Lobby Lud The Mystery Man by George Hinchliffe
Lobby Lud (instrumental) by George Hinchliffe
Holiday Song by Moses & The Ref, and
You Are Lobby Lud by Stomp.

Any more? Can we make a whole album of Lobby Lud songs?
