23 Nov 09 - 12:33 PM (#2771884) Subject: Review: EDS Englsh Dance and Song Winter 2009 From: Folkiedave The latest English Dance and Song magazine arrived today. And it is excellent. Bella Hardy features on the cover and in the feature "Song and Source" which is about the Castleton carols. There's the story of the Hooden Horse in Kent, Fosbrooks Phenomenon, Fellside records, and so on. There are some great photographs and the usual reviews and news. Derek Schofield deserves a gold pig for his work on this magazine. Join the EFDSS and get it for free. |

I think there is a magazine-only subscription available, and hopefully Derek Schofield will stop by before too long to give the definitive answer. But the EFDSS is in better shape than it has been for 35 years, it's funding excellent projects, has a higher and better profile than I can remember, has just received Arts Council funding to do great development and encouragement work in the future, and that's without even mentioning the archives and the library. I'd suggest that now would be a very good time to unlapse that membership .... and EDS is a very good read as well! |
23 Nov 09 - 03:29 PM (#2772033) Subject: RE: EDS Englsh Dance and Song Winter 2009 From: Sue Allan Hoorah too for the Folk Music Journal - worth the sub. on its own! I re-joined EFDSS about five years ago after a break of about sixteen years, and I've never regretted it. EFDSS is definitely on the up ... and we MUST mention the library and archives: incomparable! It's even got its own Facebook page - check it out. |

24 Nov 09 - 06:46 PM (#2772996) Subject: RE: EDS Englsh Dance and Song Winter 2009 From: GUEST,Derek Schofield English Dance & Song The Winter 2009 issue has just been published. This issue includes a full list of 150 Folk Festivals in 2010, which is also available on the website www.efdss.org/festivals.html The Singer, Song and Source feature is Bella Hardy, whose song 'All in the Morning' is from her latest CD, In the Shadow of Mountains. The song is from Derbyshire's Castleton Carol Tradition, which Ian Russell writes about in The Source. Continuing the seasonal theme, there's a feature on The Drayton Wassail song custom from Somerset, which Cecil Sharp visited a hundred years ago. And news of the re-publication of Percy Maylam's book about The Hooden Horse of Kent. In Never on Sunday in Widecombe, Rollo Woods examines a unique manuscript collection of tunes from the famous village in Dartmoor, Devon. There's a feature on the remarkable dance and music group, The Fosbrooks, from Stockport in Cheshire: The Fosbrooks Phenomenon. Fellside Recordings are the latest in our series on independent record labels. There's a feature on the EFDSS's latest publication, The Fallibroome Collection, a new edition, by Nic Broadbridge, of Bernard Bentley's classic collection of English country dances. EFDSS Education Director, Rachel Elliott, writes on the Take 6 Education Project. We also celebrate Library Director, Malcolm Taylor's 30 years at the EFDSS, and the continuing party for Cecil Sharp's 150th birthday. Plus all the regular features – festive round-up, news, reviews and dance events. Visit http://eds.efdss.org to hear 'All in the Morning' sung by Bella Hardy, and to hear 'The Drayton Wassail' sung by the Wassailers in January 2009, recorded by Bob Patten. The website also has a list of the advertisers in the Winter 2009 issue. The magazine is free to members of the English Folk Dance and Song Society: individual copies are £2.50. |
24 Nov 09 - 07:56 PM (#2773029) Subject: RE: EDS Englsh Dance and Song Winter 2009 From: Dave Ruch I emailed the EFDSS this morning to find out about membership in the USA (didn't see anything on the website or membership application about postage, etc for overseas mailings and membership). No response yet. |

25 Nov 09 - 05:50 AM (#2773213) Subject: RE: EDS Englsh Dance and Song Winter 2009 From: Fred McCormick Anyone who isn't a member of EFDSS really should consider joining. To be frank it's an organisation which I used to have a bit of a chip on my shoulder about. That's because I remember the bad old days when it was totally south east oriented (I'm in the north west), totally dance oriented (I'm into song), totally geriatric, and which published hardly anything worth getting out of bed for. Let's pull a blind over that lot. Let's instead be thankful for a flourishing library, which seems to sprout fresh and fascinating Internet projects faster than I can log onto them; for the range of excellent EFDSS publications which have emerged this last few years; and for the fact that we at last have a quarterly magazine which is a pleasure to read. |

25 Nov 09 - 11:19 AM (#2773422) Subject: RE: EDS Englsh Dance and Song Winter 2009 From: Fidjit Derek. Was sent to during EDS the summer of last year, 2008. "More Scratches . . . ." by Chas Clark. Gathering dust in C# house somewhere. A couple of tracks on my space among other things. if you like. Always reckoned myself as one of the folk roots that had wandered over to Scandinavia and preaching the gospel accordingly during the sixties. Regards Chas |

27 Nov 09 - 08:32 AM (#2774832) Subject: RE: EDS Englsh Dance and Song Winter 2009 From: GUEST,Derek Schofield I've enquired about Jim Martin's problem. It's not one they've encountered before, and they are looking into it. In the meantime, you can confuse the technology by putting a series of dots ... into the postcode box, and that should work!! Triumph of human beings over technology! Derek |

05 Dec 09 - 05:45 AM (#2781177) Subject: RE: EDS Englsh Dance and Song Winter 2009 From: Fidjit Well done Derek. Done my coffee break reading. And a goodly read it was too. Many coffee breaks. Particularly enjoyed the Fosbrooks phenomenon. Just wish more Schools were as organized. Nice to follow up the, Singer, Song and Source by listening to the song on the online magazine too. Also good news about the Fallibroome Collection. That would be very useful to me. As I have already taught 8 English Country Dances to my, Swedish Dance Troupe that I play for. They are very pleased with, "Strip the Willow", "Waves of Troy" and such, etc. and they want more ! I tried to buy my early copy, but had problem as the Folk Shop wants credit card payment. Which is far too expensive when we have a Euro transfer system these days. I've contacted them and I hope we come to a better arrangement. Chas |
