BS: Starting My Layoff Networking!

So the "Career Transition" folks insist networking is paramount. So this is my first stop!

I was laid off from my job as a Graphic Designer for a regional daily newspaper (shocker there!) where I worked in the advertising art department. I am fluent in Adobe InDesign, PhotoShop and Distiller, I am conversant in Illustrator, Quark Express and numerous other ancillary applications.

I have severe Attention Deficit Disorder so I multi Task well. My nose picking is not an issue as I am also Obsessive- Compulsive about wiping my keyboard with a alcohol soaked disposable diaper that I wear to work, I eat the olives on lunch break.

I assure you I have excellent references, as I still have the mummified bodies in very small pieces in the trunk of my car.

So YA Got A Job Fer Me HUH? HUH?

I look forward to a continual, mutually beneficial networking experience.
Regards,
Nicholas D. Edmondson

OK SO Am I off on the right foot? Any input will be apriecieated.

A. Where are you?
B. Are you willing to relocate?

You're off on the right foot IF you also posted elsewhere. You also have to give serious, serious thought to B, above.

Nick, I transitioned from Graphic Design and Illustration into selling advertising. Because I understand design and publishing, it actually helps me with selling ads, being able to help a customer with the creative part of it as well. I work for a publisher, but we are also transitioning into the internet side of the product as well as print.

One good thing about sales... companies tend to hire sales people who are over 40 and 50, but it is harder to even get an interview for other types of jobs when you are over 40. I started with this company when I was 53. Check into sales. It may even pay better than design.

I transitioned from graphic design/prepress print production/proofreading/advertising sales into being an optical technician -- selling prescription eyewear, dispensing, fitting and repairing glasses and being a freelance writer. (Or at least trying to fit the freelance writing into my busy life -- at least my day job isn't creative so I can channel my creative energy into creative endeavors.)

I had done other technical sales at various times in my career -- carpeting, woodstoves and wood-fired heating systems. Never turn down an opportunity to learn a new field.

When the job market loosens up a bit, I might even find a job that pays what I used to make.
