a visit from Morrigan Phillips, Utah's Daughter

From: kendall

On Friday, a dark, gloomy, rainy day we were visited by Morrigan Phillips, daughter of Utah Phillips. She and her two friends, Marsha and Paul, came up from Boston to spend some time with us.
It was just lovely. We swapped stories about her Dad and it was obvious to me that she has much of her Dad in her. She is witty, very bright, a great conversationalist and pretty to boot!

Maybe I can talk her into getting on the forum to share some of her stories about my hero, Utah.

It was a delight to meet Morrigan, along with her brothers, at the Washington DC Utah Phillips tribute.

I really thought this would be of more interest than it has generated.

I just now saw the thread, Kendall. What a treat for you and Jacqui. I expect your visitors were similarly delighted with their hosts!

Your revised title should help interested folks find their way here.
Goodnight,

I've known Morrigan Belle Phillips since she was born. A delightful young lady. Her father was, and probably still is, very proud of her.
Depite having started college with the intention of getting a degree in business, she is now going for a Masters in Social Work back therre in the Mysterious East.

Nice to hear this story Kendall. I've been off-line for several days. I've not met her, but over the years I've heard from a close friend (JW) who is a member of the Rose Tatoo that she is a delight. Happy visiting. bob

How many children did Utah have...I hope to get to the Kate Wolf festival this next summer and it sure will be strange not to have Utah strolling about regaling folks (usually young ones) with tales. It sounds like there might be the beginnings here of a new Phillips out there making life great for us folks...

There are three of Utah's progeny(the fruit of his looms he would say).
Here's a link to youngest son Brendan's band MySpace page. I sometimes play with them, they do new and interesting arrangements of Utah's songs.

I have heard of and seen the sons, but not the daughter..looms, indeed!
He has woven a tale or two in his time, as well.

I like the Orphan Train as done by Fast Rattler.

I can imagine that Utah would enjoy that his daughter
has decided to change from business to social work.

I've been e mailing her trying to talk her into comintg to the Getaway but she is in college and she is editor of a paper so getting away would be very difficult.

Seems like from all I've heard about the music there, the Getaway would offer many prospects for articles for her paper, Kendall.

Way back, decades ago, when Bruce was doing a concert in New York City, he announced that he had just become the father of a baby, "a lady baby," he added. Morrigan must be the "lady baby" grown up.

My brother wants a CD of "anything by U Utah Phillips" (sung by him - not others singing his stuff] If I had to pick only one recording to give to him, what should it be?

LOAFER'S GLORY comes to mind, but then that was the recording where I got to play with Utah (and we were nominated for an INDIE for Best Traditional Folk recording. Though I didn't find out about the nomination until we had already lost, Utah didn't tell me!.) But my personal favorite is his 1st Philo record GOOD THOUGH, a superb collection of Rail Road songs.

Mark Ross beat me to it. He did some of his best work on Good Though. There's also a box set titled Starlight on the Rails, which I enjoy.Too much Utah? For me there could never be too much of the songs, stories, rants and personality of Utah Phillips.

What Mark said. Dead even tie.

"I'm from Utah. You ever been to Utah? WHY?"

I can't avoid that line coming into my head, whenever "Solid Gone" is sung...

Just one? "Good Though"... then maybe "All Used Up".....then everything else.
