This was an amazing surprise last night, particularly in view of the day we had had - see 'Another biopsy'. It was a joint effort - Dan told us the idea - I got the first few people interested in donating a track, Kendall used his friendships with some good names in the folk world and then Dan took over and did most of the hard work. It pleases me that this album has been nominated as this will, hopefully, lead to more sales and that will benefit Joanna. This was an album created out of deep love and respect for a great man, who never really looked for fame and fortune and who spent a lot of his time trying to make life better for others. I only wish that he was alive to see this. |

It was just a group of friends going to put out a CD. 12 tracks or so and see if we couldn't raise a few bucks to help out. You three and Gordon, as I recall. I say, "sure, I'll throw in an old wobbly song". Seems like every few days I get a call from Dan. "Rosalie Sorrels is in", "Paxton is giving us a track", "Ed Trickett, Marcy and Cathy are onboard". Then we needed distribution and I was working with Jim Fleming on a fundraising concert for Utah's family. I put him in touch with Dan and they worked out a deal with Ani Difranco. Dan was absolutely devoted to the project and was the steam in the engine. He deserves the lions share of the accolades on the project, and I am most happy for my young friend. Next thing you know, Pete Seeger, Jean Ritchie, Mary Black and Emmy Lou Harris are a part of the deal. What started out as a little 12 track CD among friends and admirers turned into 39 tracks from across the spectrum of the folk music world. From: Dan Schatz Although for a compilation album the official nomination goes to the producers, this album really was a grassroots, group effort, and all the musicians deserve a great deal of congratulations and gratitude for the time, love, and often money that went into making every track. But especially we couldn't have done it without Jacqui and Kendall, who got us rolling, gave the project energy and credibility, and stayed right through to the end, whether we were dealing with sequencing, liner notes, cover design, or what have you. Don't let them sell themselves short. One other person that deserves a HUGE amount of credit is Charlie Pilzer, who took a collection of 39 tracks, some recorded in studios, but many recorded in homes, and mastered them into a CD that works. From: jacqui.c Last night I booked the hotel for that weekend - we can cancel up to the day before if necessary. Now I'm checking airfares and will be talking to my financial adviser as to available funds to allow us to get to California. This will all be just about two weeks after Kendall's next bout of surgery and that has to be taken into account. I hope that we can get there - it really is a once in a lifetime thing for us. We're trying to get some publicity going to bring this to the attention of the voters, telling the story of why and how it happened and of the amazing generosity of the performers, many of whom paid out of their own pockets to put a track on the CD. If anyone out there can help with newspaper articles or mentions on radio shows we would be grateful. |

You can hear the Emmylou track as a sample track by going to the Righteous babe site, clicking on the Singing through the Hard Times page, and then clicking on the track list. There's a little icon next to four of the tracks - click on that to listen. One of the four is the Emmylou piece. I'm guessing that it's something he adopted fairly late in life. I met Utah in 1971 and spent some time with him occasionally over the years and never heard him speak of any religious beliefs. He always called himself an anarchist said an anarchist was anyone "who didn't need a cop to tell him what to do," or who knew to do the right thing because it was the right thing to do. "Cops," he would say, aren't just the police, they're anyone who imposes their view and way of doing things on others. Certainly that includes all organized religion. The only time I ever heard Utah speak of Unitarians was in a joke about raising money to send a poor Unitarian kid to camp...if you can find one. |

One of the reasons he liked UUs is that we don't impose our views on others, and we have a wide diversity of beliefs. In his words: "This is a spiritual family, which I have chosen, and this is a family which will not and does not make rules for me. This is the family, which says to all of us — enjoins all of us — to think with the mind that we have, and not the one we're supposed to have." On the Starlight on the Rails CD he talks about writing "Hymn Song" at the behest of his manager, and telling the manager that he was a Unitarian. I remember him doing a concert at Passim in Cambridge, MA, where he talked about singing folk songs at his Unitarian Universalist congregation. "We're religious liberals," he said, "so we sing liberal folk songs - like 'Which Side Am I On' and 'I Would Rather Not Be Moved.'" From: Art Thieme Mark and all, When Utah showed up dressed in the 18th century garb for the pre-opening invite-only tour of the great King Tut exhibit at Chicago's Field Museum----it very quickly became apparent that he knew ten times more about Egyptology than the official tour guide did. Indeed, Utah Phillips could (and did!!) read the original ancient hieroglyphics carved into the stone artifacts there. It was pretty amazing. He was the consummate showman---and it was always aimed at the education and enlightenment of his audience! Utah took over that Tut tour. When it was over, the tour guide, an actual Egyptologist with the Field Museum, and Bruce, were deep in conversation. I do miss being able to call him and gab for a while. By the way, I don't know the timing on this--as to when you have to get your votes in as to who wins in a given category. But I do know that anybody can become a member of the Grammy voters by joining the Grammy association--I think there's a fee of $75/ year or something like that. A choral group in my area did exactly that. Lots of members of the group joined. And the group won in that category. There's a strong suspicion there is a causal relationship. Now folkies may be completely above stuffing the ballot box. But if we really want Dan, Kendall, Jacqui, et al. to win, it's just possible Mudcatters can influence the outcome. If we don't mind using this tactic. If of course it's not already too late for voting. Of course it's also very possible that the Utah tribute will win without any of this. If I had to guess, I'd say the only strong competition might be the entry from--who was it--Loudon Wainright? |

Grammy voting has now begun, and will continue through the first week in January. Ron, there are requirements to become a member of the recording academy - you have to be credited on a certain number of published tracks, be actively pursuing your craft, etc. On the other hand, many Mudcat members meet those requirements, and it is always good to have more academy members with expertise in traditional music. Old friend, Ron Miles, just e-mailed me with a link to it even before I noticed it in this thread. If it means some extra cash for the Phillips family that would just be stupendous!! Jeff Dankert wrote the story after we talked on the phone. He's a fine reporter over at the paper, and he did an earlier very nice piece on the Smithsonian requisitioning the original slides from which the "Art's Place" folk scene photo site was created for me by Bruce Kallick (BKlick here at Mudcat.) Amazing, I'm glad I looked in on this Forum tonight. Max and all of you have made it possible for me to keep a presence in our folk music world from afar now that playing music is not there for me. The decisions are being *made* right now, as those of us who are voting members of NARAS have just until this coming Thursday to get our ballots in before the deadline. The national TV telecast does not usually include the folk categories, but they ARE broadcast live on the internet at www.grammy.com just before the "regular" telecast takes over. |

I haven't even had time to digest them all, but Dan's rendition of "Queen Of The Rails" practically has me in tears every time. Then Mick singing "Hallelujah! I'm A Bum!"* just makes me break out grinnin'! And all the other wonderful songs from Utah and others, performed so freakin' well! Youse guys have done yerse'ves an' Utah PROUD! I'm A Bum" may be "Traditional" where lyrics are concerned but the melody is borrowed from the hymn "Revive Us Again," which has known authorship (which I'm too lazy to look up at this hour of the morning). |

I am so glad that Kendall's surgery isn't happening until the 16th February - at least, next week, we will have time to decompress properly. |

As far as winning - while it would be nice, I don't really expect it to happen. Every album nominated this year is exceptional, and some have received very wide recognition. That doesn't mean our album isn't good or deserving - just that the other are also good and deserving. The way I look at it, we're not going to collect an award (though all nominees do get medallions - when would you wear it, that's what I want to know) but to celebrate the album, Utah's legacy and basically have a lot of fun doing something way over the top. Jacqui, As I said in today's interview this CD was a gift for all of us. Something we all did because we cared about Utah and his music. Now with this press we are also sending out a message to the big world of music, that our home grown music is also important and deserves recognition. Utah was such a great mentor and friend who always was trying to help us with the trade. Now it seems like once again Utah is sending us his helping hand, helping us all to grow. When I set up all the pictures and memorabilia, I also lit a candle in his memory . There was a powerful feeling in that room. I was so happy that I had the chance to tell his story and our story with this wonderful project. So many thanks to you Jacqui, Kendall and Dan for making this all come together. Have a great time in LA, and no matter what happens we are all ready winners as we had the chance to honor our dear friend and bring his music to many new listeners! I think that, like Utah's music, this award is for all of us who love the 'homegrown' music. |

There was even a tribute to Thomas Edison, and it doesn't get any more luminary than that! The nominee reception was great fun. Photos from today are forthcoming (some are already up for those on Facebook, including two on my public page. You can access these even if you don't do Facebook. No cameras allowed at the Staples Center, so pictures on the red carpet will be cell phone pics, and then all cameras off for the ceremony. Sorry guys. It's great hanging out with Jacqui, Brendan, Cathy Fink an d Marcy Marxer, and Charlie Pilzer, among many others. Rap R&B Hard Rock Heavy Metal Music Video Short Form um... What else is left? The great variety of music out there is great. But the Music "Biz" is bland as a... really bland thing (I was going to say "bland as Hell," but according to most accounts, Hell is anything but bland). |

It has been an interesting weekend - we have seen some amzing acts this evening, even if some of them wer definitely NOT to my taste, but I can now say that I was in the same room as Placido Domingo and Andreas Bocchelli, two of my heroes, in addition to yesterday being in the presence of Leonard Cohen. Kendall's daughters have been wonderful companions and I have loved spending time with them. I'll be glad to be heading for home tomorrow. |

From: jacqui.c I've just got up - at about 1.30 - I was totally wasted this morning so stayed in bed reading all morning. The travel back was on time and OK but does get very tedious. I had a good time at the Grammys, but not an experience I would want to repeat, as if there will ever be another chance! I finally got home at 2.00am - arrived in Boston at 10.00pm but no bus until 11.25 and then a two hour journey to Portland. Poor Kendall also had to stay up until then to come and get me from the station so we both went to bed very late, but not before he was given his Grammy medal, which he has been wearing all day now! He will be cooking dinner. I'm going to check the net and then veg out in front of the TV and catch up with the stuff I put on tape over the weekend. Pics will follow. I've still got to download mine and get hold of whatever Deb took. Dan downloaded a lot from Charlie Pilser and I'm hoping to get copies and do a set on flickr that I can post here, but probably not today. |
