08 Dec 09 - 11:56 AM (#2783810) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: WalkaboutsVerse Joan Baez "speaks about her career, which has spanned more than 50 years, and her personal life, including her relationship with Bob Dylan" (my "TV Easy" guide). |

08 Dec 09 - 05:14 PM (#2784087) Subject: RE: BS: Joan Baez Endorsement From: GUEST,Falco Profile on Joan Baez 22:35 on BBC One tonight. The American singer-songwriter Joan Baez talks, more candidly then ever, about her personal life and a career spanning 50 years. Political ally to Martin Luther King, lover to Bob Dylan, she was the most admired and desired performer of her generation, using her unique voice to get her message of peace and racial equality heard around the world. Baez tells about her unconventional upbringing with Quaker parents, her near-breakdown due to stage fright, and her complicated relationships with lover Dylan, husband David Harris and son Gabe. |

08 Dec 09 - 06:44 PM (#2784164) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: Rasener Wow I thought - Oh no Joan Baez. Can I be arsed to watch. My wife suddenly said, "Oh look Joan Baez is on" I initially didn't pay much attention. And then Bang. I was locked into it. What a wonderful lady. Loved the program and so glad I watched it. Humbled. |
08 Dec 09 - 06:47 PM (#2784167) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Bonnie it's coming out on DVD... I think the package includes a CD as well ... have a search! Derek |
08 Dec 09 - 06:50 PM (#2784168) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: GUEST,Derek Schofield and I should have said ... it was a great programme! being a few years younger than Joan baez, and not having been consciously influenced by her songs, I kept thinking, "ah, so that's why we and others were singing those songs in our sixth form folk groups - they cam from Joan Baez!!" Derek |
08 Dec 09 - 06:56 PM (#2784172) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: Bonnie Shaljean Cheers, Derek - actually I can get BBC TV digital in Ireland, though not the iPlayer, and I've taped the show - saving it for a time (which isn't tonight) when I have some relaxed headspace and can just sit down and enjoy. I'm putting a tracer on this thread, to keep abreast of all the opinions. Sounds like a good 'un . . . |
08 Dec 09 - 06:58 PM (#2784174) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: Folknacious That was, unexpectedly, very good. Her and Dylan being touchingly honest. The street scene with the cellist in Sarajevo. All very moving. Then the death of Mimi brought wetness to my eyes. If it was setting the record straight rather than pump fiction - and it certainly seems to have been - then I've misjudged her all these years. Off to look for the DVD mentioned above. |
09 Dec 09 - 03:07 AM (#2784432) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: evansakes A totally captivating and wonderful programme. I'd never before appreciated how genuinely brave she has been in so many situations. Hanoi, Cambodia, Sarajevo.... not to mention Capitol Hill. The hand held footage with the cellist in Sarajevo was moving beyond measure. |
09 Dec 09 - 03:09 AM (#2784434) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: evansakes Link to watch on iPlayer |
09 Dec 09 - 06:09 AM (#2784495) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: WalkaboutsVerse I enjoyed both her singing and speaking; there wasn't much on her musical upbringing but, checking Wiki., it seems she was largely self-taught. |
09 Dec 09 - 06:36 AM (#2784502) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: GUEST,keithofchester The full 85 minute version is here (for two more days) http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/episodes/joan-baez/how-sweet-the-sound-watch-the-full-episode/1185/ And there is another 45 minutes of out-takes too IIRC. |
09 Dec 09 - 07:27 AM (#2784511) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: Smedley Not unlike one or two other posters, I have never been a great admirer of her voice (a little too 'pure' for my ears) and I had some scepticism towards her politics (a little too 'cookie-cutter American liberal), but the documentary made me realise how significant she has been and what a rich, compelling life she has led. She also has a much better hairstyle now than in her youth!! (Trivial, moi?) (Still not wild about her voice, though the duet with her suster Mimi was rather splendid.) |
09 Dec 09 - 08:38 AM (#2784543) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: bubblyrat What an excellent programme ! ---So glad I watched it,it answered a lot of questions for me. I wish I could afford guitars like those, though ! |
09 Dec 09 - 10:26 AM (#2784604) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: GUEST,keithofchester Joan's autobiography "And A Voice To Sing With" is back in print and makes for a fascinating read about her life up to about 1990 (which is when she wrote it). You'll find it on Amazon. |
09 Dec 09 - 11:49 AM (#2784679) Subject: RE: Baez on Beeb From: Bonnie Shaljean It's great - well worth investing in, very readable & not expensive. (Be sure to click the blue banjo-&-catfish logo at the top of the main page, and access them through this site so Mudcat gets some dosh out of it.) |
