For anyone planning to make a weekend of it, there are some reasonably-priced bed and breakfast places here: Lewes area bed and breakfast .

Barcombe is about three miles from Lewes and twelve miles from Brighton. There is a bus service in the day. For the end of the evening it should be easy to arrange taxi sharing and a few people may have spare places in their cars.

Unfortunately we'll not be able to come this year. We have a family celebration (Mum & Dad 60th wedding anniversary).

Hilary Ward is giving us a foretaste at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club on 9th. January - she's doing a half-booking, so there will also be plenty of scope for floor singers.

The forecast is for the roads to clear, so this is ON.

I've just written my annual letter to the pub reminding them of our timing for the day and how it helps to have food delivered to a big table by the door, rather than having desperate staff uttering cries of 'Sausage sandwich for Bloggs' just as someone gets to the penultimate murder of a ballad.

On the subject of ballads, don't forget that we have a ballad session in the Elephant & Castle in Lewes from noon - 3.00 p.m. on the Sunday. The Elephant does Harveys Best, Timothy Taylors and good pub food as well. The atmosphere for ballads is enhanced by the presence of the Angel of Death on the stairs (seen here with Alan Day, who is the one in the V-neck jumper; picture courtesy of Will Fly).

For people who like to use buses, here is the
Lewes area bus timetable. The 125 goes from Lewes Bus Station and Lewes High Street on Saturday morning. The last bus back is at 15.37, but there are will be people going back to Lewes, Brighton and elsewhere through the afternoon and evening so it may well be possible to negotiate a lift or a taxi-share.

It'll be a treat to hear you, Hils, especially after being forced to cancel last Saturday by the snow. We look forward to re-booking you at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club later in the year.

Brill, hopefully we can combine it with a Squirty ice-cream hunt *grin*

Any idea how the roads are near Barcombe??

Horrible at the moment, but expected to clear in a couple of days. I must find out what a squirty ice-cream is one of these days.

There's very little snow around now. I hope to see Will Duke at the Royal Oak club in Lewes this evening - he lives in Barcombe - and find out what state the roads are in. A bit muddy, I imagine, but otherwise passable.

Will and Chris Duke, Barcombe residents, report that the roads are passable except for Anchor Lane, which is nowhere near the Royal Oak.

After the frustration of having so many events cancelled lately, I hope everyone will be bursting with the urge to sing. There must still be a lot of unexploded carols and wassail songs in everyone's repertoire.

It was a terrific day - everyone had been suffering from the multiple cancellations caused by the snow and was bursting to sing. At least a hundred people came in the course of the day.

If you're in the area today, come to the Elephant & Castle in Lewes from noon - 3.00 p.m. when we are holding a free ballads-only session with Sandra Goddard in the chair.

It works because of the excellent and enthusiastic people who turn up. Many thanks to all the singers! I certainly heard a fair number of songs which were new to me, and saw some new faces as well.

The Royal Oak has just phoned to say that someone left a small case of Craig Morgan Robson CDs behind. I can arrange to collect and post them, or the owner could ring the pub on 01273 400418. The guvnor is Mike Austen.

Thank you to Valmai and her gallant crew a right good weekend, well worth the long journey we certainly had a most enjoyable and interesting weekend. Good Songs and Good Singers.
Sunday was a bit an eye opener, but very thought provoking.

Well done Valmai and Bryan - I really hope to make it one year, preferably once I've given up the day job, but I currently have a nasty cold (which is why not going to Herga this evening) and singers wouldn't have wanted me anywhere near you!

Kitty, I hope you're fighting fit again soon.

I should have added that seventeen people came to the ballad session which Sandra Goddard ran at the Elephant on the Sunday afternoon. Most people sang two ballads each and we carried on until 4.15, although we'd expected to finish at 3.00 p.m.
