04 Jan 10 - 02:01 AM (#2802737) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: Valmai Goodyear Hilary Ward is giving us a foretaste at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club on 9th. January - she's doing a half-booking, so there will also be plenty of scope for floor singers. |
04 Jan 10 - 04:07 AM (#2802773) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: Splott Man Sorry we won't be there this year, seasonal rituals in the way. Splottie & Pattie |

11 Jan 10 - 02:43 PM (#2809299) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: Valmai Goodyear The forecast is for the roads to clear, so this is ON. I've just written my annual letter to the pub reminding them of our timing for the day and how it helps to have food delivered to a big table by the door, rather than having desperate staff uttering cries of 'Sausage sandwich for Bloggs' just as someone gets to the penultimate murder of a ballad. On the subject of ballads, don't forget that we have a ballad session in the Elephant & Castle in Lewes from noon - 3.00 p.m. on the Sunday. The Elephant does Harveys Best, Timothy Taylors and good pub food as well. The atmosphere for ballads is enhanced by the presence of the Angel of Death on the stairs (seen here with Alan Day, who is the one in the V-neck jumper; picture courtesy of Will Fly). |
12 Jan 10 - 05:38 AM (#2809824) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: Valmai Goodyear For people who like to use buses, here is the Lewes area bus timetable. The 125 goes from Lewes Bus Station and Lewes High Street on Saturday morning. The last bus back is at 15.37, but there are will be people going back to Lewes, Brighton and elsewhere through the afternoon and evening so it may well be possible to negotiate a lift or a taxi-share. |
12 Jan 10 - 07:06 AM (#2809864) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: My guru always said Really looking forward to this! |
12 Jan 10 - 07:52 AM (#2809878) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: Valmai Goodyear It'll be a treat to hear you, Hils, especially after being forced to cancel last Saturday by the snow. We look forward to re-booking you at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club later in the year. |
13 Jan 10 - 07:49 AM (#2810809) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: My guru always said Brill, hopefully we can combine it with a Squirty ice-cream hunt *grin* Any idea how the roads are near Barcombe?? |
13 Jan 10 - 09:53 AM (#2810894) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: Valmai Goodyear Horrible at the moment, but expected to clear in a couple of days. I must find out what a squirty ice-cream is one of these days. |
14 Jan 10 - 01:27 PM (#2811890) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: Valmai Goodyear There's very little snow around now. I hope to see Will Duke at the Royal Oak club in Lewes this evening - he lives in Barcombe - and find out what state the roads are in. A bit muddy, I imagine, but otherwise passable. |
14 Jan 10 - 06:42 PM (#2812149) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: My guru always said Thanks for the info Valmai!! Roll on Saturday.... |
15 Jan 10 - 04:18 AM (#2812403) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: Valmai Goodyear Will and Chris Duke, Barcombe residents, report that the roads are passable except for Anchor Lane, which is nowhere near the Royal Oak. After the frustration of having so many events cancelled lately, I hope everyone will be bursting with the urge to sing. There must still be a lot of unexploded carols and wassail songs in everyone's repertoire. Valmai |
15 Jan 10 - 05:29 AM (#2812448) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: GUEST,synbyn I like the idea of unexploded carols, opens a whole new genre... or is that canons? |
16 Jan 10 - 04:26 AM (#2813432) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: Valmai Goodyear Hurrah! No snow, some rain. I can hear the Harveys calling, both Best and Old. See you there, Valmai |

17 Jan 10 - 05:17 AM (#2814093) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: Valmai Goodyear It was a terrific day - everyone had been suffering from the multiple cancellations caused by the snow and was bursting to sing. At least a hundred people came in the course of the day. If you're in the area today, come to the Elephant & Castle in Lewes from noon - 3.00 p.m. when we are holding a free ballads-only session with Sandra Goddard in the chair. Valmai |
18 Jan 10 - 05:09 AM (#2814768) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: GUEST,synbyn And thank you, VALMAI and all your merry crew for a wonderful day's singing- you're quite right, and there was so much variety and quality about. Lovely venue, good grub and splendid ales... Wassail! Bob |
18 Jan 10 - 08:23 AM (#2814851) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: Valmai Goodyear It works because of the excellent and enthusiastic people who turn up. Many thanks to all the singers! I certainly heard a fair number of songs which were new to me, and saw some new faces as well. The Royal Oak has just phoned to say that someone left a small case of Craig Morgan Robson CDs behind. I can arrange to collect and post them, or the owner could ring the pub on 01273 400418. The guvnor is Mike Austen. Valmai |

Good Songs and Good Singers. Sunday was a bit an eye opener, but very thought provoking. |
18 Jan 10 - 02:25 PM (#2815093) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: Herga Kitty Well done Valmai and Bryan - I really hope to make it one year, preferably once I've given up the day job, but I currently have a nasty cold (which is why not going to Herga this evening) and singers wouldn't have wanted me anywhere near you! Kitty |
19 Jan 10 - 01:07 PM (#2816024) Subject: RE: Sussex All-Day Singaround 16 Jan From: Valmai Goodyear Kitty, I hope you're fighting fit again soon. I should have added that seventeen people came to the ballad session which Sandra Goddard ran at the Elephant on the Sunday afternoon. Most people sang two ballads each and we carried on until 4.15, although we'd expected to finish at 3.00 p.m. Valmai |
