Tech: Problem with web site: Allmusic.com

I use Windows Vista and Firefox.

I always keep several tabs open in Firefox. I have Mudcat open on one tab, and Allmusic.com on another. (And other sites on other tabs.) Switching between tabs is a lot faster than waiting for a new page to load. I figure this saves me a lot of time when I am doing research to try to answer a request on Mudcat.

Lately I have noticed that when I switch away from the Allmusic tab, and then go back to it later, I find the whole window is blank. If I click the reload button, then the Allmusic page I was on reappears, but having to do this slows me down.

Allmusic is the only web site that (almost) consistently gives me this problem.

Allmusic is a wonderful site—there is nothing like it for the thoroughness of its information about music (who recorded what, etc.), but it is annoying in some ways, too. In particular, its advertising is rather aggressive. It has ads that are not exactly "pop ups"—they don't open a new window—but they are "pop outs" in the sense that the advertisement pops out of the rectangular box that ads are usually confined to and moves around your screen, maybe even covering up part of the data you want to see. Usually there is a tiny "stop" or "exit" button somewhere that makes the ad go away or settle down, but you have to look for it.

I'm not sure, but I suspect the ads have something to do with this disappearing web page problem. Could this be something Allmusic is doing deliberately? I mean, are they forcing me to hit the reload button so that I have to see a new ad?

I'm thinking of emailing them to complain about their ads, but I thought I'd try to gather some information first.

Does anyone else have this problem? Do you have any insights about what is causing it?

Yeah, I've had problems with allmusic, too. It used to be very easy to make use of the Website, but they got more and more gimmicks and advertising. It's still a great source of information, but the ads make me nervous.

I see what you mean. I had not been to that site in a while. It is a wonderful resource. I guess they had to find a way to make it pay somehow

I go to it sometimes, but it's become too busy for this ol' boy.

I'm not seeing any of the above problems, on SRWare Iron (a fork of Google Chrome), Firefox, Opera or MS Internet Explorer.

I do have a big hosts file installed to block many advert sites so maybe that's doing its job.

Google for [ hosts file advert blocker ] and pick and install one.
It will block adverts from other sites too...
