Now how do you suppose she convinced that poor man, with all that money, that she really WAS a witch?? After all he must have been a smart man. I shake my head in wonder at the uncharted depths of human dumbassedness.... A |

10 Dec 09 - 07:32 PM (#2785771) Subject: RE: BS: Which witch is which? From: Rowan Which reminds me of the bloke who, driving up the Hume Hwy, picked up a young lady who was hitchhiking. During the conversation she said she was a witch. "Prove it!" said the bloke. So she put her hand on his knee and he turned into a motel. Cheers, Rowan |

After all he must have been a smart man." The article doesn't give the man's age. Was he 40? 80? 90? Does he have health problems? Is he a stroke victim? Given the paucity of information, he could be any of these. Whenever we read the news, it is important to note what's NOT there as well as what IS there. |

11 Dec 09 - 10:02 AM (#2786091) Subject: RE: BS: Which witch is which? From: Uncle_DaveO Even putting his possible age aside, just being a lawyer doesn't necessarily tell how smart he might be. Yes, presumably he got through law school, but that's very largely a result of being able to read and memorize, and lots of dogged persistence. In my nearly fifty years working in and around the courts I've known a number of lawyers who raised the question, "How in the world did he ever get through law school?" And then there's the proverbial "You can't cheat an honest man." The drive to gain by taking unfair advantage of someone can law one open to being defrauded. Dave Oesterreich |

11 Dec 09 - 03:40 PM (#2786365) Subject: RE: BS: Which witch is which? From: frogprince I know that there's some truth to "You can't cheat an honest man", obviously based in how easy it is to cheat someone with more greed than disgression. But on the balance it's a shallow, cynical "maxim". The woods are full of scum preying on aged and vulnerable, or otherwise guiless and trusting, people. |

My aunt is 85 and she has been scammed "somewhat" by handymen working on her property lately, but I can't interfere because her daughter is "in charge" of getting things done and she knows everything... by phone... 3000 miles away. I get so pissed off but I gotta keep my mouth shut. If it was big bucks, I would put in my two cents, of course. |
