Dame Pattie's spoons Obit.

Kind thoughts, please.

At a private gig yesterday afternoon, without warning, Her Grace's upper spoon just snapped in two.

These spoons have served her well for more than 35 years, and over the years have become one with her hands, fitting perfectly to her needs as a virtuoso of the kitchen percussion.

They were liberated from Loughborough College in the mid 70s and, being EPNS, had a quality tone.

At the gig she had to borrow some stainless steel ones from the hotel kitchen, and being modern just didn't have the same tone.

She now has the long and arduous task of training up a new pair of apprentice spoons.

The next time I go to a Garden Party at you know where , which I hope will be in 2014,I shall be sure to keep an eye out for any good examples of you know what.Meantime, might I suggest a trip on ,for example, the Queen Mary 2, or,indeed, the Orient Express where,I understand, some good examples may be encountered ( and ,with but little difficulty,re-deployed) ??

She didn't lend them to some Israeli spoon-bender did she?

So sorry to learn of the demise of the mini-ladle! Just swim accross the Severn Sea and come and raid our collection of old silver & EPNS cutlery - see if you can find one or two to suit. Or you could wait till the ferry starts up next Easter.

A Pontardawe car boot sale provided me with mine, so check out the charity shops for quality percussion cutlery!

She will just have to fork-out for the replacement. What about reparing the old ones? A substantial collar crimped or maybe set in lead, sweated into position. Yes Yes they would have a different centre of gravity but so would an upstart spoon. I would lend her my red ones but they are rather attached to me, emotionally.

I'm going to start with the welder at work. if that fails, it's training up a new pair, she has a vast stock as you can imagine.

Positive thoughts for the welding, but I think there'll be some training to be done....

Here lies Dame Pattie's spoon
Most tuneful tipper beneath the moon
Though all things must come to ash and dust
The music sings on and will ne'er come to rust

So lift mug, glass and tankard to toast her well
Let her memory wrap you in its spell
Until Dame Pattie replaces this friend
Remember good things sometimes come to good end

At least she died doing what she loved.

There must be an appropriate spoonerism to cap this thread with, but it eludes me.

A re visit to Loughborough College could well pay off.
I'm sure they'd still have some of the old ones there.

Oh! as you can imagine I am devasted over the demise of my spoon. It just fell in two, just before the gig, metal fatigue I think you would call it, just where my forefinger and thumb held it, so sad. Nothing could be done to save it and it's twin is in mourning as I write. It will be placed along with it's broken siblin in a very special frame at home and mounted on my bedroom wall. It has been a part of me for 35 years, and now I have to train another pair. I don't even know if they are able to work together yet! However there are a few pairs from the spoons orchestra who over the years have auditioned unknowingly so I think all is not lost............what this space.   SOB!

Oh yes I know that poem, it's great. However my spoons have always known their place and have never played out of turn in a session. I'll make sure the new ones are well trained too.

That's the trouble with spoons! They can dish it out, but they can't take it, and now they've obit the dust, so may they rest in obits and pieces . Each night until Christmas, you'll have to sweet talk your lover to plead for a new set.

"By the light
Of the silvery moon
I wanna spoon
To my honey I'll croon love's tune....."

So, this Christmas Eve, while the rest of us are straining to hear

"On Dasher, On Dancer, On Prancer and Vixen...."

....Yule be listening with an ear to the skies for

"HI-YO, SI-I-ILVER, AWA-A-A-AY!!!!!!!!"

So best of luck, and may each new spoon be a souper one!

I, too, am devastated by the sad loss of Pattie's spoon. Years ago, after a visit to the defunct Swansea Folk Club, I bought a hot, steaming curry so The Dame and I could share it. There was no cutlery, so quick as a flash she produced her two instruments and gave one to me so I could not go hungry. Was this spoon the one that snapped? One can never know... but I still like to think that was the spoon that saved my life.

There's always a bright side --It didn't break mid tune and injure somebody.

Oh Dr. Price you remember that night! I remember that curry too, but I must say if you had eaten with that spoon in latter years you would probably have died of food poisoning. It had been around quite a bit since then, but I would like to think it was that very spoon that saved you from starvation.
