At a private gig yesterday afternoon, without warning, Her Grace's upper spoon just snapped in two. These spoons have served her well for more than 35 years, and over the years have become one with her hands, fitting perfectly to her needs as a virtuoso of the kitchen percussion. They were liberated from Loughborough College in the mid 70s and, being EPNS, had a quality tone. At the gig she had to borrow some stainless steel ones from the hotel kitchen, and being modern just didn't have the same tone. She now has the long and arduous task of training up a new pair of apprentice spoons. |

A substantial collar crimped or maybe set in lead, sweated into position. Yes Yes they would have a different centre of gravity but so would an upstart spoon. I would lend her my red ones but they are rather attached to me, emotionally. |

It just fell in two, just before the gig, metal fatigue I think you would call it, just where my forefinger and thumb held it, so sad. Nothing could be done to save it and it's twin is in mourning as I write. It will be placed along with it's broken siblin in a very special frame at home and mounted on my bedroom wall. It has been a part of me for 35 years, and now I have to train another pair. I don't even know if they are able to work together yet! However there are a few pairs from the spoons orchestra who over the years have auditioned unknowingly so I think all is not lost............what this space. SOB! |

Years ago, after a visit to the defunct Swansea Folk Club, I bought a hot, steaming curry so The Dame and I could share it. There was no cutlery, so quick as a flash she produced her two instruments and gave one to me so I could not go hungry. Was this spoon the one that snapped? One can never know... but I still like to think that was the spoon that saved my life. |

I remember that curry too, but I must say if you had eaten with that spoon in latter years you would probably have died of food poisoning. It had been around quite a bit since then, but I would like to think it was that very spoon that saved you from starvation. |
