When I was in Yorkshire last summer, a friend had a video copy of Sam Larner and Harry Cox that was made by the BBC in 1964, but was never aired. The young Coppers are the offspring of John Copper and his sister Jill and their respective spouses...however they are The Copper Family too of course and used their 'Young' moniker when they were indeed young!...now they should properly be called The Copper Family too along with with John, Jill and Jill's husband. It seems to have been quite rare in tradition, with only a handful of versions on The Full English and only a couple more in Roud. All of those versions have slightly 'vanilla' major key tunes, except for one: the rather nice modal / minor tune used in 'Far from the Madding Crowd' and popular on the folk scene was collected by Vaughan Williams from a Mr. Pottipher at Ingrave, Essex. RVW noted the tune in straight 3:4 time (it gets sung much more freely these days, and is better for it IMO), and only wrote down one verse, adding the rest later from a broadside. So, yet again, a folk revival favourite turns out to be - at least to some extent - a fake! Oh dear, back to New Penguin... |

Tangentially: there are numerous YouTube recordings of "The Crabfish," including one unison version sung by two or maybe three generations of a nice American family somewhere in Dixie. (The video is called "The Crawfish," even they they clearly sing "codfish") "Heartbreak Hotel" provides the tune for one singer. |
