Well, that's certainly a mind-bending image.

I've always been fond of hexagons, and they are an efficient structure that often shows up in nature such as in honey combs, frost cracks in the arctic, and cooling rock fractures.

Bénard cells? These are caused by convection currents, which you'd expect rising to the poles.
