I recall some years ago sitting in my car, parked in the East Green Lake parking lot (in north Seattle) and seeing a cormorant standing there on the swimming raft, drying its wings in the sun.

I didn't know until then that we had any around here.

Here in coastal New England, cormorants are also referred to as shags.

In England they call it 'Standing there like a wazzock on the pavement.' In NZ it is 'Sitting there like a Shag on a rock.'

Both sayings mean having a befuddled appearance, or alternatively being a sitting target.
No wonder foreigners have to ask, eh?
