WFDU Christmas Program - Online

Subject: WFDU CHRISTMAS PROGRAM - ONLINE
From: WFDU - Ron Olesko

Today (Sunday December 20, 2009)I will host the 30th annual WFDU-FM'S TRADITIONS CHRISTMAS PARTY.   Back in 1980, the year I started the radio series, I thought it would be appropriate to put together a three hour program of traditional folk music. In those days, I had a small stack of LP's that I thought were the perfect antidote to the usual Muzak fare offered at the holidays. I shared music from Jean Ritchie, Odetta, Joan Baez, The Weavers, Burl Ives, Nowell Sing We Clear, Christmas Revels and a few others.

In 2009 that stack of LP's has grown to include a substantial collection of CD's with offering cherished holiday carols and songs. I also include some great contemporary folk songs, and I am very proud to keep up the tradition.

You can listen online from 3 to 5pm ET at www.wfdu.fm . Our shows are now archived for 2 weeks at the same website, so if you cannot tune in live, I hope you will sample the program during this holiday season.

I am dedicating today's show to Jean Ritchie, who was one of the inspirations in creating the program. Her songs and memories of Christmas are memorable, and I intend to share a number of pieces during the three hour program.

Happy holidays to all!

Ron, is it archived? I just saw this and it is past 5p ET! I remember, fondly, the one which featured a few Mudcatters. I always enjoy your show. Thanks.

Good programme Ron. Enjoying the choices of music over here in the uk although one of my eyebrows did raise a centimetre or so at 'The Kentucky Wassail'.

'Our cup it is made of the old oak tree
and our ale is brewed in Kentucky'???

I'd quite like to play that on my radio show next week. It sure is a contrast from most wassails over here.

I also liked the 'We Will Rock You' carol. I couldn't fully make out who sang it. Margot H...???

Thanks John. That was Margo Hennebach and her husband Mark Saunders sing "Rock the Cradle". They perform in a group called Mad Agnes. I've seen them perform the song in concert and they end it with a few bars of Queen's "We Will Rock You".

Like other folk songs here in the U.S., many have roots in the UK. There are a few wassail songs in our heritage too!

30 years! Congratulations! I'd missed that in your first posting. I finally have had some quiet time and have started listening. WOW, what an outstanding show. I love the version of 12 days of Christmas which you played; a new tune and version for me to learn. Some really great selections, of course Jean's songs esp. So glad you dedicated it to her. Thanks, Ron, for sharing with us.

Forgot to ask if there is a playlist somewhere?

This Sunday my co-host Bill Hahn and I will be sharing some of favorite recordings of 2009, and we will pay tribute to some of the friends we lost this year.
