21 Dec 09 - 11:17 PM (#2794043) Subject: RE: BS: Seasons Greetings from Charley Noble From: Ebbie What an interesting day! Great photos. Here in Alaska where we have so many eagles, now and again after it is rehabilitated an eagle is released back into the wild. I have been present at two of those releases. The moment when the eagle is given a toss into the air and its wings beat strongly whoosh, whoosh, whoosh as the eagle climbs up and up and then banks and aims at the branch of a tall spruce where it rests and reconnoiters for a moment or two is always exciting. It invariably looks around as though familiarizing itself with the whole concept of freedom. Then it rises and the branch of the spruce sways up and down as the weight is lifted and the large bird flies straight away and out of sight. |

22 Dec 09 - 09:22 AM (#2794253) Subject: RE: BS: Seasons Greetings from Charley Noble From: Charley Noble Ebbi- There was a similar release of a rehabilitated young eagle at this site during the annual Fraser Eagle Fest in November. We viewed the video of the release on our monitor back here in Maine. The new eagle cams on the tower are now fully operational, and the volunteer operators can pan the cameras, zoom in, and focus on the hundreds of eagles that gather for the fresh salmon take-out. The website is set up as the Hancock Wildlife Forum. JudyB is a volunteer senior administrator for the website and I get to view only the most interesting images. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

22 Dec 09 - 10:54 AM (#2794304) Subject: RE: BS: Seasons Greetings from Charley Noble From: Charley Noble Oh, evidently if one wishes to actually view eagles or eagle nests on the Hancock website, one needs to click on "live cameras" at the top of the website page. Geez, JudyB, this is really much more difficult than navigating Mudcat! Charley Noble |

22 Dec 09 - 06:07 PM (#2794599) Subject: RE: BS: Seasons Greetings from Charley Noble From: Charley Noble Severn- Eagles don't actually live in the "eagle-loo;" they do access it from the nest with what is delicately described as "the poop shot." However, as you in particular might imagine, it's not a pretty sight when one of the big fledglings backs up to the edge of the nest just when there is a parent eagle incoming. This may sound dumb, but you don't mean this time of year there are volunteers up there, right? Don't the salmon spawn in the spring? My mind can be a little too literal at times...I just kept focusing on the "volunteer operators!"**bg** Great pix, thanks and happy holidays! |

22 Dec 09 - 08:37 PM (#2794705) Subject: RE: BS: Seasons Greetings from Charley Noble From: Charley Noble Kat and JennieG- The volunteer webcam operators are sitting at home all over the world. There are some local folks who periodically have to boat across the river and service the cameras but much of the work is done on a keyboard. Fun, huh? And I don't know what the salmon are doing running up the tributaries of the Fraser River this time of year either but the eagles are there in vast numbers and eating them. Those cams are live. Check it out! But be warned (too late), they can become addictive. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

YOu'd think I'd know that it could be folks who weren't actually there since I am married to a chief engineer who does that kind of shot all the time for news and such, duh!:-) I know about the addiction...remember a few years ago when we all watched the baby eagles hatch out in Vancouver? Man, we were posting hourly updates, esp. Spaw. |
