CMHC has a lot of great stuff in their newsletters and on their site.

Haven't read this yet, but I am sure some peeps might appreciate the info.

Great info, Gnu!
Makes me realize how EASY it was to live off the grid with no running water. Leave for two weeks in the Ontario winter: Let the fire go out and put the cat out. Get in the car and go.

CMHC is a great site for all sorts of info re healthy houses, too!

What did the cat do wrong?!:-) Take it with you or put out more litter boxes and food and water!

We lived in WY where we had to haul our water all year round. I hope to never live anywhere that cold and treacherous again...so no cold weather evac. (knock on wood.)*bg*

I could not get that link to open. Maybe it is frozen, like my pipes would be if I just shut down my house.

Thanks gnu.

The family has our parent's former cottage/retirement home which we completely shut down for the winter. Spent overnight there a couple of nights ago because we need to check on the place regularly, and for emotional reasons (we LOVE the place). No water other than what we can get from the lake and streams, no sewage so we "go" outside, there is hydro but no phone or internet in the offseason, and the wood stove does wonders. When there isn't power there is heat from the wood stove, light from candles, easy water source...it's safer and more comfortable than living in town without an alternate water source, and no wood stove. We're too far from nature I believe.

Peace, Mooh.

Mooh: Sounds wonderful!! I miss that home in Ontario so much!

Kat: The cat, Friendly, was better off at home where he was ruler of his domain than being shlepped hundreds of miles and maybe having to stay in the car because of cat allergies on the part of visitees. He lived a healthy 17 years and was loved by all who met him - except the allergic, of course.
