Lyr Req: Big band song about Chinese

I heard a song on streaming radio the other night that I cannot for the life of me find the name or lyrics to.

The only discernible word that stood out was "Chinese" - repeated in the refrain - and the rest of the song was a fast-paced rumbling off of mock Chinese, sing-songy and all.

The style was definitely big band, very uptempo. Perhaps a musical.

It streamed on The 1920s Radio Network (A service of 90.3 WHRO-FM).

I remember a 78 from my childhood called "Chinese Rumba". Is that it? If so, Google offers plenty of performances.

Hmm... Thanks Joe_F, but I'm not sure that's it. I ran a search on Google but all I was finding were performances of "Chinese Rumba" as a Spanish-language song. Is that what you recall from your childhood?

Or am I missing something?

There are several Chinese songs at Levy that are probably from the right era, but it would be helpful if you could remember something more from the song. (Was it definitely Chinese, rather than Chinee? - that eliminates some possibilities).

Perhaps the radio network has a website, and perhaps a playlist. If no playlist, you might be able to email them and ask about the song. Good luck.

Hollofox - I had a look at the website yesterday - there doesn't appear to be a playlist but there are contacts.

Guest: I couldn't understand a word of it, and I'm not sure that at that age I would have been able to tell Chinese from Spanish. I seem to recall that it contained a passage sounding like "wara wara leapyear oh". Offhand, it sounded more like scat than like either language.

Thanks all -

I did have a look at the website for the station too, and found their recently played songs list, but I was too late since it only goes about 4-5 songs back.

I've emailed the station to ask if they would know but haven't heard back. I'll let you know what they say if I do.

Mick: Thanks for the tip about Levy. Looks like a great site to go digging around in! I might just find what I'm looking for there.

As for the song itself - not much else I could describe. The majority of it was gibberish. The vocals were from a male singer. It *might* have been scat, but I did sorta hear an underlying Chinese melody (I actually had it on in the shower if you're wondering about the hazy hearing).

Whether or not it was "Chinese" or "Chineee" -- coulda been either. I do know that when it was repeated, it was done so in an exclamatory manner. Chinese! Chinese!

Odd, I know.

The radio station finally got back to me.

The song is "Chinese Rhythm" by Cab Calloway and his orchestra, 1934.
